View Full Version : I have a bandwidth limit, you know.

Folks at Steam couldn't possibly have compressed the game just a little bit? I mean, 10.4GB is a bit much to download in one go, especially when my ISP limits me to 17GB every rolling thirty days. And that's just for downloading. Uploading is another matter entirely.

Seriously, it wouldn't be that hard to create a condensed installation package that would expand once download is complete.

change ISP's if possible. otherwise you're stuck.

You think this is bad? try The Force Unleashed @ 30 gigs for a game that fit on a single layer dvd on xbox...

Napoleon: Total War is a ♥♥♥♥♥ as well at 21gigs.

I don't have the OP's caps problem but it would be nice for those that do if Valve told people how large the download is and how much HD space is required for installation. A little FYI is always nice.

The thing is though I personally don't understand why people that have caps buy newer games off of Steam instead a retail version even of a Valve game. Saves a lot of bandwidth.

Thats because they make you download a lot of crap you don't need. Like directx, sound/video files for other languages, .net installation files etc. Without those its a lot smaller. On console they probably strip it all off so they can fit it on 1 disk (consoles also use much lower resolution textures though) :/

Steam is only good during the sales, when you can get stuff dirt cheap. Most of the time you get a MUCH better deal buying it on disk...

I don't have bandwith problems, but I agree with OP.
If Steam can do it, they must add an installation option designed to this cases and games with multiple language support, just a little change in the installation process:

1. Select Language (Texts and Voices)
2. Select Optional Download Items (DirectX, Video/Sound Card Drivers, .NET Framework 2.0

So, the user can download only the text and voices files necessary to run the game, also he will not need to reinstall directx + drivers + net framework in the first time.
Data weight will be less, also, less time to download it.

I would imagine it's 10 gigs because it's 2 games, no?

I have a fast and uncapped broadband connection and I love the fact that Steam, unlike most digital distribution services, doesn't download a huge blob of packed data that then has to be installed and extracted - that process often takes longer than the actual download, takes up insane amounts of hdd space and causes all kinds of headaches.
It's really one of the biggest reasons why I like Steam from a technical point of view, the installation scripts just install the usual suspects and add a couple of registry values - fast and painless.

But I can feel your pain, a 17gb cap is crazy low - where the hell do you live, there are affordable mobile phone flats here with similar caps.

Yeah, Age of Conan is like 30 gig with out the expansion.
With all the Steam sales in the last month my HDD is filling up. Lol.

Actually, The Force Unleashed is 30 GB because the developers based the PC version of the game off of the PS3 version of the game, and were too incompetent to remove the redundant data placed on the Blu-ray disc to help speed up load times. Yes, I'm serious, they were that stupid.

The hard drive space requirement is listed under specs.

The hard drive space requirement is listed under specs. It's not accurate though. As I said it's ain't a problem for me but Steam should know the exact size of each download and let their customers know.

bioshock steam dloaded 3gb or 3.5gb, ends up 5.5 installed

are you sure riddick wont be like this? did anyone monitor their bandwidth (not in the steam client)

the d2d installer is 7gb, so it probably wont get much smaller than that though
