View Full Version : Petition to give Alien Swarm a pre-load option..

I am very happy about a free game Valve, so thank you. But on Monday, when the game comes out, all the steam servers will be very slow. So a pre-load option would be nice. Sign if you agree

EDIT: Ok to all the people saying "It's free, shut up!" I am not taking advantage of having something free! It's just that the servers are gonna be slow as hell when the game comes out. having it pre-loaded would help that problem

of course that would be great, but I dont see this game being too large, so its not that necessary

I don't thinks it's that simple for them
if they could give a pre-load they probably would, to relieve stress on their servers at release
and the game will be 2.5 GB actually

Valve caters to us as a consumer. In that aspect we're allowed to complain about premotions, which is basically what this is.
I wish the TF2 crowd would realize this.

I know it is free, but we all know that when that game unlocks, millions of steam gamers will be clicking on that install now button causing a huge server ♥♥♥♥storm. Preloading will lessen the load.

Speaking from past knowledge valve games are always in high demand espically at luanch. Preloading would allow us ample time to download the game and play it at luanch which would free up alot of server space. Valve has a limited number of servers chances are if people buy new games during the time frame, servers will be busy and unable to process requests and then people would be complaining about one of the great things that steam offers, Almost instant access to any game you purchase.
Even DLC suffers from this. Left 4 dead 2 the passing many people had constant stop and go connections which made it even harder to download

Well... the reason I, personally, would like to preload a game is more to look to the stability or Steam servers. While, yes... it might not be as large of a hit as say... Left 4 Dead 2, and thus a preload might not be necessary... but I think that having the option to preload will allow users to download the data (or parts of the data) at their whim over a week or so (now two days), thus giving servers a lighter load of downloaders to deal with on release day. I have to end up switching to different download servers to actually download on big release days, such as when Portal was released for free.
But I don't really care all that much. A nod and a nice thank you to Valve, I'm sure that it will be a fantastic game and I am looking forward to it.
.:: Edit ::.
Ha... seemed lowwizard was thinking along the same lines. I remember trying to download the DLC for L4D2. Ended up switching to the Ukraine download servers. Also... +1 rep.

History/legend tells us that looking in the mouth would probably be a smart thing to do.
Also, the files don't seem to even be on Steam's servers yet, as you can't use steam://install/630 to pre-load the files(as I've done before buying a game).

Hehe... you're thinking along the same lines as me. I'm really going to have to keep this little magic trick in mind. I tried it out and, for some reason, downloaded a little bit of Portal: First Slice. It was kinda odd... only about 1.5mb though.

Incredibly useful to get those hundred megs every night before you buy the game.
For example, steam://install/300 should pre-load Day of Defeat.

its not a matter of being to good or asking for more.its simple math
so do ur #$%^ing math.
if a game comes out everyones gonna be waiting.for some 2.5gbs is alot.it would take me a a couple hours.
its simple logic to offload traffic over 2 days (sat, sun) that way Monday doesn't butt$%^& everyone tryin to tap into any servers.
tired of hearing people getting all emotional the whole "be happy its free and value did this blah blah".were very happy.because every other game on here has a price tag next to it.were happy. we just want a running start at the game.

Why are people being such ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s about this guys thread?
It's perfectly reasonable to ask for a pre-load option to take away some of the impending ♥♥♥♥ that's about to hit valves servers come Monday. Everyone knows what happens to the servers when any slightly major thing gets released.
I support the pre-load as I always get ♥♥♥♥ed when major things like this get released. I've never just started downloading, it's just been pure waiting for a couple hours until valves servers accept my request. I really do appreciate the free game though.

Preload is logical when it's a paid game, already complete and just waiting the official street release date to release it at the same time worldwide in shops.
This is a free game, it will be released when it's final. They can't make you preload things if it's not existing yet. When it's done, they just make it downloadable, no preload needed.

Agreed, I don't understand those who are up in arms about a request for a preload - we are doing VALVe a favour! We are trying to reduce load on their servers, so we can enjoy the free game without locking down downloads for everyone else!

Valve is fully capable of putting this in, it's not some strenuous task it involves hitting a few buttons.
That said they won't, they cbf.
For the freetards, it's benificial for Valve to add this because on the day of release the servers are going to die and more people are going to be complaining - BUT THERES NO DOWNSIDE TO TURNING IT ON SO SHUT UP.

So considering it would be tomorrow at the earliest that they'd respond to this and give you a preload... you really think a day for a 2.5 gig game is going to make any difference? Most likely people will just rush to preload and it will be no different than release day. Does anyone actually think things through before they post?

This thread wasn't started today ya know. Also, it would reduce server load if it received a low-key preload that those who were savvy would use, and then everyone else would download on the full release. Surely spreading downloads over 2 days is better than everyone downloading on the same day? Did you actually think things through before you posted?

Does sucking VALVe's humongous **** taste good?
VALVe is a company. NEVER forget this. All companies strive to earn MONEY. Even if they give something without asking for MONEY directly, it is NOT without getting anything in return.
Yes, I think they might try to be nice as often as they can, but a company is always a company and NOT your best friend. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just naive.
Also, customers asking/demanding/requesting things shows that we have higher expectations on a developer. Such drives them to do better, learn and grow from it. If we did not do this, there would not be any increase in quality (or at least less).
Man, some people here shouldn't have skipped school so much...

Yep. The game is intended as a promotional/educational tool for Steamworks. They're just being nice enough to release it to the public so indies and modders can have access to the information too instead of just bundling it with the SDK, which is the way most companies do it.

Why would you want a preload when it will only save you an hour of your life?Well it's like some of the people in Europe will be a work when it does unlock and will have to download when they get home. Pre-loading would have it ready except for the install and activation.

*cries with joy and relief*
At last, someone who understands the fundamentals of economy and businesses!
I just can't stand those who think VALVe releases free updates and such because "they're nice and got nothing better to do". I mean, this does NOT make them jerks or anything, but if they REALLY had NOTHING to earn by it, then they'd spend their time making MORE games instead of updating old ones. They'd still be awesome, but not more awesome than EA or some other company.
What VALVe gets from all this free stuff is that more people use STEAM! Many might not realize this, but if they get more people to use Steam, they get more money. Personally, I've bought at least 2 games just because I saw them on sale when I started up steam.

due to how steam installs and downloads games at the same time, usually they require more space than the game actually takes up. for example, my bad company 2 folder is around 7 gigs, but the store says it requires 15 gigs

I agree an to be honest I don't understand why pre-loading is not a standard feature on all new game releases. Why not do it? I assume the data has to be on the servers by now. I don't see what they gain by waiting an releasing it during the afternoon for maximum server overloadage. Well afternoon where I am anyway.
They could still unlock it then but its better than having Steam be swamped with people downloading. Since the whole idea of this game is to get people to use Steam then its not going to be a good first impression is it?

Elitests will always look for opportunities to make other sounds like idiots so they can feel rad and groovy. Asking for a pre-load is not a big deal at all. There's no harm in asking.
Now if this post was about how the OP is going to bomb Valve's studios if they don't do a pre-load, or boycott the rest of their products, then you'd have reason to gripe. But it's not, so quit with the high and mighty routine. He's ONLY asking.

Not going to happen. Even when people post petitions games only get a pre-load because it's already been decided prior to the games release or any petition for it, they've just been tight lipped about it.
Definately wouldn't happen for a game of 2.5GB.
