View Full Version : Controller support?

I find it kinda strange that a top-down shooter doesn't support controllers. Alien Breed: Impact does and is absolutely fabulous. I'm not one that plays everything with a controller. I still use Mouse&Keyboard in most of my games. But in games like this i see a big potential for gamepads.

I stopped reading after this

Well, if you don't like controllers, don't use them. I'm just asking for additional Controller support. Not making them mandatory like in Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance.

Now take your bigotry and leave please. If you have something constructive to say, you're welcome.

I completely agree, this style of game is begging for controller support.

From another thread (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1364182):
if its source it might have that little "exec 360controller" command :D

you aim with your mouse (cursor), so I doubt using a controller would be comfortable

Sure it would. You move with the left stick, aim with the right. That's how they did it in Alien Breed, which is a very similar game.

The example I was thinking about was Geometry Wars (http://store.steampowered.com/app/8400/) (my first purchase on Steam), if you've played that. I found the 360 controller to have a much better feel than the mouse and keyboard. Not to say the mouse and keyboard were bad, but the controller felt more natural.

Exactly, you only need the direction, not the range. So a small wiggle with the right stick gets you pinpoint accuracy at all times. With a bit practice of course.

Works excellent in Alien Breed: Impact.

The way the original mod was made it wouldn't work right with a controller. And I'm sure this game is the same, a mouse and keyboard will be requird for the game to play properly.

How so? I haven't played the original, so I am genuinely curious.

Which won't work that great with analog input devices like Sticks. Native support would be a lot better. Adding a useless lol to your sentence doesn't make it better. Maybe you should learn how modern controllers work and how they can't compare anymore to a digital input device like a keyboard.

And i agree with shackanaw, i'd like to hear why Controllers won't work that good in this game.

The fact you say they don't work well with analog sticks shows you don't use them that often.... Hell you can make it mimic mouse movements and multiple other things.... Think and research before you speak I use both programs on a regular basis not my fault if you don't know how to get them working right.

If you had asked for controller support for a pc game a few years ago, you would have been laughed out of the room but nowadays for some weird reason every pc games need support for controllers. I don't see why pc games would need controller support.

Some games simply feel better to certain players with a controller. I wouldn't use a controller for an FPS or an RTS, but for a top-down shooter or a driving game, for instance, I would take the controller every time.

I would love to see controller support.
But don't most Source games have Contoller support?

Because PC gaming is about options and customization. You must have not played many top down shooters. These games are much better with dual joystick support. I don't mind using the mouse and keyboard, but I would rather use a gamepad.

This game was mostly made by the Black Cat team within Valve and uses a different engine build than the other games. I probably wouldn't be surprised at it for not having controller support or SteamPlay with Mac OS X.

If this game is anything like the mod it spawned from, you wouldn't be able to use a controller in the way it's been suggested. Don't instantly think it's like Smash TV or any other overhead shooter. In the mod, you had to aim precisely on your target to hit it.

Example: The little facehugger-esque enemies from the mod were flat to the floor. You could shoot in their direction all day and if you weren't spot on with the reticle, you wouldn't hit them. Even with the reticle on them you needed quite a few shots before you could drill in. You were better off popping a flare (which granted aim assist), or using one of the aim-assisted weapons (the smartgun equivalent, or the experimental assault rifle).

If you removed this element by having flat hit rates in the direction the stick is firing in you'd be changing the way the game feels and plays, as well as potentially nullifying several of the equipment options.

That said, I hope to hell the cigar made it back into the game as selectable equipment. I liked playing as a Sexual Tyrannosaurus

Exactly. This game was made specifically for a mouse an keyboard. The game would need to be dumbed in order to add controller support.

top down shooters are as old as they come. and back way-back-then we used joysticks...
so yeah if it's a shooter gamepad support should be there. but i won't be dismissing this one even if there isn't.
