I was wondering if this game is played like a "campaign" (like the L4D series) where a set of maps are played by the team of four or if the game is played by levels where the game simply ends or is extended after a single map.

I hope for the latter as one of the issues with my playing the Left 4 Dead series is that I usually don't have time to spent an hour (much less two hours for versus) on a campaign.

there was an entire campaign to be played either in single or coop but each level is seperate. After each you would go to the briefing and kit screen.

You could play any mission in any order if I recall. Can't remember if you had to unlock them though.

it was indeed campagin based, origenaly your squad (the 4 people you are playing with) started as bog standard grunts in there respective classes, through doing well in campagins you earned a number of badges and levels which you could then spend... an example would be if you shot 20 bugs in a map with a pistol you unlocked the pistoler badge that let you weild akimbo pistols for the length of that campaign (everyone went for this on the first map as it really helped when you started running low on primary ammo later on) your leader aka host or person to join the dedicated server first would the select what area to enter next if there was a choice.... you would have to enter each area and complete it at least once, but there was some areas that if you where having problems with you could leave for later when you had lvl'd up

so bassicaly if they keep it the old style.... yout not going to be in real luck, aprently the unlocks are now account based rather than campagin based so you wont lose character progress when you load a diffrent server but its still not going to be a "one round" affair...

That sounds fun :)!!

You couldn't play maps in >any< order. The campaigns usually had 1-2 levels in a row, and after that they'd branch off into 3-4 directions 1-3 levels deep. Once you got to that point you could pick which branch to tackle first, or switch branches. Sometimes to progress in one branch you might have to do a mission in another.

Something like this.

o o<final mission
start | |
o------o----o----o
|
o----o<prerequisite for final mission

Your levels are persistent within each campaign, so optimizing the order in which you did missions could drastically improve your chance of success. (So you had more levels in your skills for the harder missions.)

Huh, it's interesting to read about how the perks and levels in the older mod version of this game were not account-based but specific to each campaign. While I can potentially see some troubles with such a system (people theorycrafting the optimal way to gain the levels on each play through and making all other ways inefficient; just not fun!), it definitely would keep some replayability after completely maxing out everything.

Hope Valve's keeping something like that in!

I just hope it has some sort of procedural content generation, as cutting through exactly the same aliens every single time is going to get boring really fast.

There were other campaigns that got added by the community, plus there were mods that added things like the cam rotating as you played, respawns so a high HP alien would come at you, you would kill it and then aliens would pop out of him, face hugger types were the final.

Not keeping the stats did add replay value and when you have an 8 man team (only 4 in this version - modders'll probably change that) it made it so much harder due to friendly fire. It was the players that would make the game different.

You Forgot to Mention that anyone that uses a flamethrower is usally Hatred , Due to the fact that the tinest Flame could ignite a ammo Box and cause everyone to explode in a massive orgy of explosions

For my group of friends it was usually someone with the shotgun backing up as an alien was closing in, only to get behind another player and completely rip them in half with a shotgun blast.

We laughed ... we cried ... we usually died.

Thats what happened to me Several times While going Shotty , I would back up while aliens are closing in , only to accidentally run behind someone and blow their face across the map , and back in there , we used to Punch Parasites , I Just Saw the "Parasite Puncher" achievement on the Alien Swarm Steam Page
