The game starts with all collors wrong and crash in seconds.
Windows 7 64 bit, I7 X980, MB Gigabyte X58A-UD7, 12 GB Ram DDR3 1.600MHz 6GB (3x 2GB) G.Skill Ripjaws - F3-12800CL8T-6GBRM, GPU NVidia GTX 295. The rig is very stable, this is happening only in this game. Any ideas?

Runs fine for me Phenom 9600 2.3 Ghz, 4GB ram, 8800GT 512 MB, Win7 64.

Are you getting any errors with the crash? Did you see DX install when you started up the game first time. It did for me.

If you haven't done so yet, try verifying your game cache just in case you are missing a file or one or more have been corrupted..

Runs fine for me too, Asus P6T Deluxe,i7 920, 6GB ram GTX295, Win 7 64bit.

I did get the problem where it asked for the CD key, but verifying the game cache fixed that.

Did you manage to get in the main menu? or does it crash before you even get there?

Today at daybreak Steam updated the game, about 200 MB download. Now the game is working apparently well. Thanks for everybody that answered.

Probably the steam bug that it says the download is complete, but it has only downloaded half of it. like thousands of people had when downloading MF2

There was no update from our side nor the game itself got an update. I guess this was a steam issue as yesterday there was a Steam downtime with issues for some hours. So, they have probably just fixed the Steam thing :)

No information about updates, patches, etc. I think that was the bug like was said before. By the way, excellent game.

It really is, isn't it? Amazing that 7 years later it is still fresh and people can still enjoy it :)

Mark of a truly excellent game.

Sure. Another old game (10 yo) is Deus Ex. Just finished it last week and that was an excellent and honest game. Chaser have a similar taste. But my remark was a bit off topic wasn't it? :)

It just points out some games despite dated graphics are still fun to play in this day of worshiping realistic graphics. This imo is because the core gameplay itself was fun and solid in both games. What we get a lot of these days is very pretty fluff with little substance and the focus totally on the MP side of the game. The SP being just a tacked on after thought.:(

Amen. So many games with beautifull graphics and nothing more. Couldn't agree more.
