Do I need both installations?

I bought Tropico 3 some time ago.
Now I bought AP and Steam is patching the old version and is installing the new version.
Will I have two different installations on my HD when steam is done?
Do I need both? Or can I delete one installation?

You will have one installation of Absolute Power in the end. (AP includes all content from original)

Ok, but I have two start symbols now. Can I delete the old one or are they both pointing to the same installation directory?

AP will be installed into same directory, overwriting some files from original T3.

So if we just bought both of the games, there's only the need to just tell Steam to install AP then?

Wish they handled this more easily in Steam, expansions should just be marked as DLC content rather than a separate game. Had a problem with Civilization4 where I didn't get content from the other expansions even though I told Steam to install the latest.

You are right. It's sometimes very confusing.
I have also some other games with two icons and I have no idea which one is the newest ;)

However for this game I found out that the game will install AP to the existing installation Folder. It's not possible then to delete the old icon because it's blocked due to the AP installation.
If you delete Tropico first and install AP without Tropico it's doing a full installation as well but you will have only the AP icon. I haven’t tried to install Topico afterwards ;)
So for this game it doesn't make any difference what to install.
