Im kinda suspicious. Why would they give away a game like this for free? Or is this one of those, try it then buy it deals? Anyone wanna clarify? Thank you!

As far as I know, it's actually free.

The best explanation I can give is that Valve is awesome.

It's 100% free.

There are no hidden requirements. You get the game as-is for free.

I remember seeing a post from a mod that said they plan for this to be "free forever".

Valve like to spoil us and we get a free hat too :D

It is an advertisement for steam. People want the free game, join steam and a percentage of them later buy games.

VALVe is buying us.

Not that its a bad thing.

maybe because it was a mod that valve got interested in and hired the guys who made it and they said they wouldn't take the job if the game wasn't released as a free game?

Yes the game is free.

Free forever or time limited?

No, and No. It was originally intended to be a stand alone pay game. Only the Devs can give the final answer as to why its free. Why ask why, its free, play it.

Awesome game, and I'd definitely pay for it if it were sold for a price, but thankfully it's not and that's great!

The way I see this, it might just be a test for something as well :P

Now if valve really wanted to make the marketing go, they should give you exclusive items in alien swarm if you buy valve games :D

The first hit is ALWAYS free.

Part of it is Valve's desire to push Steamworks as an API to developers. Alien Swarm includes all the Steamworks integration that they want shown off, and since the source code has been released free as well, developers can take a look at how the APIs work in actual game code without having to pay anything. Valve's banking on some developers adopting Steamworks once they see it in action and in code.

They outright said as much when they announced the game a few days ago.

Why ask why, its free, play it.

The only reason we are asking why, is that no other developer out there would even think about releasing a game that looks as good as this one for free.

Infinity Ward would strap on price tags for the base game, and some crummy DLC. And most other developers out their would have at least put a $40-$50 price tag on the game.

You guys are being completely generous here, and extremly selfless about this title. And that is something we never see in gaming anymore. Most dev's just care about the money they can make. You guys seem to genuinly care about the fans and community that tag along with your developments. And that is really cool of you guys.

By the by, thanks for the game.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth, just take it and run with it, if Valve said it's free than it's free.

So, you'll complain if the game comes with a price tag, and when it comes free, you WANT it to have a price tag to feel right. Hmmm.

i agree with AKM. but games like this SCREAM for premium expansion packs, like new campaigns, as there is only one to select. of course, people can make them for free as well.........

Just as well it is free, otherwise visiting these forums would get quite expensive.

Not true maybe YOU hadn't heard of good free games but their are quite a few and they all look quite good.

Just too mention one which is still played a lot.

Trackmania Nations.

This game however is awesome but i wish people would stop praising valve, instead praise the developers for a good game. Free or not don't really matters.

I can see why its a free game it feels like this is a very polished mod. however it is incredibly fun to play.
The content of the game leaves a lot to be desired. Community has to stand up to the task if this game will be awesome as for now its definately a great game.

If the game only has 4 hours of campaign, no randomization and no replayability then smart people wouldnt buy it. The only thing that would keep it alive is modding. But people also hyped up L4D modding and custom maps and that went to shlt quickly.

It's completely free, as everyone else has said.

From what I've read, it's basically a small project to show off the new version of the engine, the way TFC showed off its engine as an example of what you can do with the new SDK.

There'll be added content, just like they did with the original. Modding won't be the only source for new stuff.

It doesn't seem like AKM is complaining, s/he's just answering the question.
