I'm currently playing on SH4 and I don't know what the crap I am doing wrong. Since this is my first time playing this game, I figured I'll try it out on the easy bit, and turned on Automatic TDC. The problem now, is that I can't hit a ship to save my life. I keep the ship in my sights, the "arrow" even turns green, I activate the Position Keeper and turn the button red, and I let off a torpedo or three. Sometimes I try to identify the ship through the manual, and sometimes I even mess with the depth and speed of the torpedo to see if it makes a difference, but it almost always seems to miss. Is there something I am doing wrong, or not doing at all?

Make sure that you open the door for the torpedo you intend to fire first. Not doing so can cause a miss. If the target is zig-zagging, it will make it a bit more difficult to hit, but if you get within 800 yards, you should not have to much of a problem. If you are not sure if you will get a hit, make sure that the position keeper is set, check the attack map and fire if the white line is lined up with the track of the ship.

You can learn some more by watching the attack map as you try to set up a shot, especially if a ship is zig-zagging.

One other thing, to insure a torpedo explodes on a target, check the draft of the vessel in your sights with the recognition manual and set the depth that the torpedo runs to at least a foot deeper than the ships draft, but not more than 3. It will detonate in the proximity mode verses contact mode which can cause a missfire.
