Just started playing last night and I regret not buying this game earlier. I did have a couple of questions I was hoping to find some answers to:
Is there a way to decide which ships show up first for a combat? It is really frustrating to have a large fleet and have my tankers/refinery ships show up for combat before my cruisers and get wiped out.

Is there a way to repair ships that aren't at systems I control? Is there a tech I missed?

Is there anyway to upgrade ships from old designs to new ones?

I think that's all I got, any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm new to the game also and am curious about these as well. I haven't seen answers in the manual or tutorial videos yet.

I'm pretty sure you can't upgrade existing ships, but I'm not 100% sure. I read something along those lines in another thread but didn't see any definite answers.

I have another question to add to the pot - is it possible to edit the colors of each ship part? I'm playing human and the multi-colors are a bit of an eyesore.

1. Yes, you need to have a CnC ship in your fleet (look for Battle Computers under the C3 tab if you can't find the tech), and then push the "Manage Fleet" Button in the universe view. It should be above the fleet, the left button of the three.

2. Yes, you need to research Repair and Salvage after you get Cruiser Tech and then build RaS cruisers. Or Support Dreadnoughts, when you get there (which are unlocked by Repair and Salvage).

3. Nope. You just have to live with the old and build new ones.

4. No. I agree that some of the sections do look bad, but the only colour changes are the "side colours" - the trim that changes with the colour you pick at the beginning.

Hope that helps you both.

Also as a side note. (unless its the very beginning with base tech)
Your outdated ships are not useless. With a few added ships of either equal caliber or more advanced such as tankers they make excellent scouts or an excellent blitz brigades depending on how many aged ships you have. :)

Unless your enemy is the zuel. Eventually the worst you will face by using this tactic is running into zuel ships using your outdated tech.

Quite, thank you. Now I just need to see if I can find some numbers on how many ships a CnC ship can bring to a fight. The game is fun but sometimes the simpleness and lack of numbers frustrates me.

How come that some world that aren't even war and have a 'line' to it to travel, it takes 50 turns or so.. even though there is a line going towards it!?

Human ships can only travel up to their range on a node line. When you say "go there" to a star that's too far away you'll be told that it can't be reached and asked if you'd like to use standard ftl drive (which will take a long time).

Research fusion / antimatter then the improved star drive tech that becomes available to use the longer node lines.

You can scuttle an obselete ship or fleet at one of your planets to gain a short term boost to production there and a proportion of the build cost back to your treasury.
If you're upgrading star drives then it's worth scrapping the older stuff to build your new fleets faster.

That's the odd thing, the star isn't even far away, it is like

O ---------- O ( 0 = star - is line ) which somehow is to far.

Yet another star system nearby

O ------------------------O 4 jumps... it is just odd...
