There are workarounds.

Simple things like using the portal particles and trigger_teleports.

You'd lose all momentum that way, but it's an idea.

There's a couple of people doing different Portal map ports and Portal themed maps.

Isn't it easier to mod a top-view camera into portal than modding the whole portal content into alien swarm?

I used a script to do that a while back. It was pretty neat, and I'd debated creating maps specifically for top-down play.

There is already a 2D version of Portal, available online. It plays in flash, but basically captures the feel of Portal.

So an AS version of Portal would be like that, but top down.

HOWEVER, that flash online 2D Portal allowed you to see the *whole* level at once. Which was important in the way it played. In AS, you'd only see a piece of the level, and it would probably be too confusing to do any really good puzzle play. You'd have to bring the camera way up high somehow.

Alien Swarm is Alien Swarm.

It's not creative to take one game and fit it into another and think you've innovated.

You didn't. You just copied and pasted.

Now if you had an idea to do something completely new with AS, well THAT would be interesting.
