View Full Version : Physx = buy. Period

So after looking through the forums I saw a thread saying that some guy wasnt going to buy this game because of the PhysX support. I for one love PhysX and find that it adds a whole new layer to the game. If I find this game utilizes physX very well and is a good game, 100% purchase on my part

To me both viewpoints are extreme.
To me, it is Mafia 2 is effing awesome = buy. Period.
irregardles of what physics solution is there :P
But physx can be nice bonus, if it runs well. But with my GTX280 I expect to turn it off anyway, I will turn on antialiasing instead.

I'm going to purchase it either way because I'm a huge fan of the first game.
This said, I like me some awesome destruction effects, so bring on the PhysX.

This.
And PhysX is completely useless as far as I'm concerned, so it'll be turned off for me. The only game I did enjoy with PhysX effects was Batman AA, since that really added to the atmosphere.
In every other game that I've played though, PhysX was just badly implemented, penalized framerates way too much to be worth the few extra useless effects that added nothing to the experience for me.
Either way, PhysX is not something I base my decision whether to purchase or not on.

It was like something that had been build for the future
Think about 10 years from now, maybe it will be the time that we commonly got
16Gb for Ram and 4 for Video card, PhysX would hardly mean anything.

Physx wouldn't be hard to run well in Mafia 2 if the CPU could take more of a load off the GPU.
Anyways my graphics card is the weakest point in my system so i'll be running the game on high without or maybe low physx even though I have an nVidia.

I agree with that, and disagree at the fact the PhysX inspire people to buy the game, Havok could easily deliver what Mafia 2 is set to deliver with PhysX and be available for any cpu/gpu
PhysX isn't built for the future, unless you want the future to be a future of companies like apple/nvidia and their propietary software. It's strange seeing people like this on the Steam/Valve forums since Valve are one of the most open developers out there (havok/opengl for mac/directx for pc)

Physx is awesome if you can take advantage of it. If not, you can still play the game how the developers would have made it were it not for Nvidia helping out to add the extra effects.
So IMO, people saying they won't buy the game because of GPU-accelerated physx are acting irrational.

Not if you want to stop game developers releasing games with arbitrary hardware-specific restrictions. If they'd restricted part of the game so it would only run on AMD CPUs even though Intel CPUs could run it just as well if the game didn't prevent them from doing so, you'd expect people to be pissed, right?

I would be frustrated if 2K, on their own manpower, put in specific features that were proprietary to specific hardware. But 2K did not, on their own, add in GPU accelerated effects. Nvidia sends engineers to help code this stuff in. If Nvidia does not do this, then those effects will never be put in. So not being able to play with GPU-accelerated physx is playing the game exactly how the developers would have released it had Nvidia not helped out.
I don't look at the vanilla version of Mafia II as being handicapped; I see it as being "normal."

What am I loosing by not having a Nvidia card? Some optional additional physics effects that in no serious way changes the gameplay or visual quality? OH SO OUTRAGEOUS!
Yeah as many people already have said, most of us cant even use physx anyways, i mean i wont ever have 2 graphics card, In this country power is quite expensive. and another graphic card just for Physx lol no no no never not gonna happen.
Im sitting on 280gtx as well, so im not gonna run with it either, but its gonna be an awesome game nonetheless.
But i do agree, its stupid Nvidia and Ati can do physx they share, because what company in their right minds wanna put 50% of their customers in the B-List just because oh to bad you dont have Nvidia. Its just not good for business.

This is true, but for those of us with ATI cards it's an absolute piss-off that we can't take advantage of it, especially when we should be more than able to.
That's not influencing my decision to buy the game, the first one convinced me to do that nearly eight years ago, but if there's any way to work around the Nvidia card lock and throw PhysX to the CPU, I'd love to give it a try.
I've got a spare 8800GT alongside my 5870, but there's zero room in the case for it. :p

i use a 260 gtx and any physx runs amazing for me at a solid framerate, even the physx benchmarks

Couldn't really care less about physx, and i've got an nvidia card. In my opinion its effects look ugly.
