Recently, your Steam account was erroneously banned from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

This was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you.

The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version. This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game. This wasn't a game-specific mistake. Steam allows us to manage and reverse these erroneous bans (about 12,000 erroneous bans over two weeks).

We have reversed the ban, restoring your access to the game. In addition, we have given you a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2 to give as a gift on Steam, plus a free copy for yourself if you didn't already own the game.

Just restarted Steam and I get a screen saying thanks for buying left for dead 2 pack. I'm like, oh great my MW2 account gets banned a couple days ago when I didn't cheat and now someone hacked my account.

I look at my VAC status, Now says In Good Standing. Obviously VAC was the problem, or I don't think this would have happened. I have to redownload MW2 to see if it really works or not.

I would love to get an official apology or at least explanation as to what the hell happened?

As far as I know, I never joined a hacked lobby. My settings were never changed, and I never noticed anything out of the ordinary when playing. In fact, I pull host the majority of the time I play the game. On the other hand, I also believe a hacked lobby can't get you banned. In the end, I got banned, but Valve fixed it.

Now back to MW2!

Just wanted to say, Vac did it's job perfectly, it detected modified files in your game folder and promptly banned for it.


How they got on there was not any one of your faults though, it was the way IW's server system works, that transfers these files to your computer.


Vac is still perfect, MW2 isn't.

it's not the first time as I've said multiple times in the "I'm banned for no reason" threads. But having a billion posts in the MW2 section wasn't going to fix the issue, I told people to post in the VAC section to get there attention and just sit back and wait. If there was an issue (which there was) they'd catch it and fix it like they have other times.

I was about to have myself institutionalized. I really believed I had gone crazy and actually cheated without even knowing about it.

But I'm glad it's all over, and I'm glad I got MW2 back on my original account.

Now I just have to request a refund for the other MW2 copy I had bought on a new account.

No - by the looks of it VAC was set to ban for something which should not have been a bannable offence. VAC operated correctly in banning for something which it was told was a bannable offence. However in hindsight it seems VAC should not have been told to ban for what it did end up banning those 12K players for. Think of it as a false positive I guess. :)

After emailing Steam support a few times and getting the standard replies I gave up and lost faith in Valve and Steam. It's nice to see that they can come out and offer an apology plus give out a free game. Thanks Valve, my faith in you is restored :D

I'd just like to point out a line

This was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you.

The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version. This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game. This wasn't a game-specific mistake. Steam allows us to manage and reverse these erroneous bans (about 12,000 erroneous bans over two weeks).

VAC just caught what it was programed to caught, Edits done to a game core file such as DLL. So in theory VAC is still perfect.

Now though I'd like to see how many of those people will take up cheating again. As I doubt all of these 12 000 people are innocent.


But we'll never hear the end of this one for sure.

Zefar is quite right that VAC actually worked, the problem was elsewhere. But since the result is the same for the end customer no matter what, they got an apology and a gift from Valve.

Those who alreday bought a new copy of MW2 still probably isn´t satisfied, but everyone else got everything that they could ask for.

This is awesome. I've been saying that no software can be perfect for a long time but even I started to think that VAC doesn't do false positives after so many people on these forums explained how VAC works, even though they don't even work for Valve and thus have no real information about it.

There are still hackers out there.
There were almost in 50% of all games I played yesterday. Wall-hacks mostly. Didn't take it too seriously. Some of them left even mid-game, when they didn't get the respect they thought they earned(!).
These were in Hardcore, Domination, and Hardcore S&D. I don't play Groundwar; mindless tubing and lots of kids who do not appreciate an online experience.

Haven't encountered a hacked lobby since a long time, though.
But, Murphy says, I should backup my MW2 userdata folder once a day, which I do.

VAC detect modification to the DLL and EXE as cheats and will ban for this.

Steam made an error while trying to update and this changed the DLL in such way to trigger VAC. VAC didn't trigger something random but something that is against the rules.

It's honestly the same deal with Paranoia and TFC Bloom. Except this one was caused by Steam.

In the email they said it was a problem with Steam, the program. Valve updated Steam with the update for MW2 in a bad way I suppose because that's what it sounds like.

This lead to an DLL file being different and VAC triggered on that.

It banned for modification to the core DLL files and this is actually a legit VAC ban. They reversed it because it was caused by Steam.

So VAC didn't randomly ban for some silly thing it banned for the edit done to the DLL file.

One reason why it wasn't detected right away.

False positive = Banning for a program like winamp, VLC, FireFox or any other program that isn't on the list of known cheats and files.


So I think IW are out of error on this one. Though they still need to fix IWNet so that it doesn't send people to hacked servers.

Raise a ticket with Steam Support. From what was stated by the moderators of this forum the bans should have been lifted even if you did not raise a ticket (see post #127 in this thread).

When people first started claiming that they were getting banned without having hacked, I said as how if it was really a false positive, it would happen to a lot of people, and you'd see a lot of people clammor onto the forums and protest. And if it was a false positive, they'd release a statement and unban.

Hackers usually don't come and pretend to be a false positive because they know they can't prove it. You get the occasional idiot, but not like waves and waves of them.

Lo and behold, lots of people began claiming to be false positives and at that point I figured it probably was because of the number of people. And VAC unbanned.

None of this happened because people came to the forums to bounce around like little ants in a bean can saying "I got banned I didn't hack" and "You hacked you got banned" over and over and over again. It happened because a potential false positive was reported to VAC, they investigated, and agreed.

All this forum nonsense and flames both ways is just stupid. A real example of the average intelligence and maturity of the common forum poster.

I think VAC's 'reward' of giving L4D2 was pretty nice. More than simply unbanning, they give a free gift as well. The VAC team has shown the most maturity throughout this whole episode.

My hat's off to Gabe and the VAC team. Keep up the good work.

The developers of VAC really need to get off their high horse and stop all of the 'VAC is perfect' because if VAC is checking latent memory versions then that has to be a flaw in VAC. Why is it checking latent versions????

Also VAC claim to check all of the bans first - Obviously they don't !

Its great that Valve have reversed the bans but the excuse doesn't add up in my mind and also makes me wonder how many others there have been

Editing the exe or dll file will cause a VAC ban, steam the program that is failed to make a signature or the team forgot to send a official one.

Modifying dll have often to do with some cheats. So reason it took a bit of time was because it looked valid since the dll file was official one.

VAC did what it was supposed to do, ban people who have a modified dll or exe file.

Was VAC designed to tell people to jump off bridges? No. If you told me VAC told you to jump off a bridge, I would say that it was not VAC that told you. I am not trusting VAC, I am trusting the people who made it. Chances are, they are the most knowledgeable of that subject.

exactly and to all the ones that came in here saying oh i joined a hacked lobby and now i am banned. we told you that you cant get banned for it. and to the guy claiming that they can send you hacked files which will trigger the vac ban was wrong as well. apparently steam made a mistake and vac is still flawless. it banned all the players for cheating becuase of steam messing up with a download and appearing to be a hack on the players pc. am i sorry for griefing you about it no. there are dozens of cheaters banned crying they do nothing. when they really did cheat. you are unlucky to get vac banned. and steam made it good for you. if you want to hang around for the next vac ban wave you can watch all the kiddos come in here saying same story you did but in reality they are cheaters.

Right. We were wrong about you guys cheating but we were not wrong to not believe you. To us, it was just another wave of bans. There will be more waves of bans and more people making Forum accounts to say thy were wrongfully banned, but I still won't believe them until they have evidence.

and Kharnage128, i am the same, i agree i was wrong about "some" of the banned ppl but not all of them and i will also not believe anyone that comes posting feigning innocence because i have no reason to.
