Hey I've just recently installed Frontlines Fuel of war and the first time I launched it, it worked fine but now when I try to launch it, it just says "Preparing to launch Frontlines: Fuel of war" for a second and then disappears, no error message or anything.
Reinstalling the game didn't work either.

Had a similar thing on Win7 which I fixed by changing the compositing settings on the exe.
Go to the exe (mine's at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\frontlines fuel of war\Binaries\FFOW.exe) > right-click it and select "Properties" > under the Compatibility tab check the "Disable desktop composition" box.
Hope that helps :)

Hey buddy - was having the same problem as you. I remember something a friend showed me with Cities XL (which I had the same problems with).
Basically, because this is a 'common' app, sometimes there a few extras you need to install. Very helpfully, Steam doesn't actually let you know. So try this:
1) steam -> steamapps -> common -> FFOW
2) in here there are a bunch of folders. pay particular attention to
OpenAL
PB
PhysX
VCRedist
3) go through each one and run the file inside them. Some of them are installs, others are system checks.
4) once you have run them all, exit out of explorer and try running the game. You should find it works
Hope that helps - let me know if it doesn't :) (also make sure you can run DX9c which it seems to use)

Oof. Sorry to hear that. My 32-bit system runs it just fine now that I updated my C++ libraries etc etc. Are you sure you ran all of the installs I suggested? And is the game crashing or just failing to initialise (simply not starting)? The fix I suggested is for the latter of those two. If you are crashing... then don't know what to suggest.
Sorry!

Bio, it's not Steam's fault that the game is bugged. This sale leads me to believe that the second game may be just around the corner.
Keltic, I was active for a while on the Frontlines Community Forum, and there was never once a dev from the game posting. Not unlike a lot of other games. And THQ does have a history of poorly coded games, like Stalker.
Dual core Athalons running XP may be OK, but with XP you need a special driver for a dual core, and that may be the thing that makes the game run OK. Vista and Win 7 have native multi core CPU support, so no driver is needed.

Im going to wait till monday, if the game still doesnt work ill contact steam support. If they cant help then I will force them to give me my money back (There are laws in the Netherlands regarding online purchase even tho its just 1 euro).. I bought something and I expect it to work. This is madness (sparta style).

Hi,
if you got an ATI card, install the PhysX driver in

It seems not to properly install the first time.
Afterwards it runs smoothly in my case.

Inside those folders there are install files that you need to run. The other important one I forgot was the folder titled DX9c which contains small fixes for direct x 9c. You need to run that one, even if you are running DX10 (like me). It's silly, I know.

Well like I said... that solution only fixes the 'not-even-going-to-attempt-to-load' problem, where steam just sort of gives up. If you have errors given on startup (eg crash warning), you should really get in contact with Kaos about it (don't rely on the forums, give them an email).

Just thought I'd put my solution in.
I'm using Win 7 64bit, Nvidia 8800gt (quad core proc).
I couldn't launch game at all, tried all the suggestion listed here but none worked.
I rolled back to 260.89_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_international_w hql driver and now it launches. I was previously using 261.00.
Anyway, hope that helps!

Rob, FYI, a lot of times patches available for retail versions of games won't work on Steam games, because they can't "find" the game. It's in the "steamapps" folder, and the patch looks for the game to be in it's own folder.

I verified the game files and it found & installed an additional 12 files. Now when I try and start the game I get:

Same problem but with a different error code. Surely Steam would have tested the compatibility of this product with theirs before making it available for purchase?

Steam is just a retailer, like Wal Mart. I can guarantee you Wal Mart doesn't test the games they sell. And how would it be possible to test a game on thousands of different PC configurations?
I'm not trying to make any excuses for this game being poorly coded. I know all to well the issues this game has. :(

Hello James, Thank you for contacting Steam Support. You may need to update your version of Punkbuster Setup, verify the game's files at least once and obtain new client files. Please follow the link below for information: Title: Verifying Game Cache Files (GCF) Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335 Please follow the link below for the latest version of PBSetup: http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php NOTE: Do not install this into your Steam folder. Once you have downloaded it please add your game to the list. After it has been added please click the “Check for Updates” at the top of PBSetup and the new client files will be downloaded. "Unfortunately this game is not supported for Windows 7 (and 64 bit systems). We can refer you to the Steam FFOW forums for more suggestions:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=362
You can also try the following:
Open your Steam client, and select "Games" from the top row, then click "View games library". Locate your game and right click on it, then select "Properties". You will see a small screen with five tabs. Select the third tab, "Local files". Click on the "Verify integrity of game cache..." button. Once it completes the process, completely exit out of the Steam client, then restart Steam. Now try the game."
someone has to find some solutions....
