Thats interesting because the non-steam versions seem to be at 1.3.1 - wondering what the differences are.
Is it just because it's steam or are there some global changes...?
Fancy posting the readme anyone?

4. Known issues
4.1. Graphics
Use only the latest versions of drivers for a correct game operation. If your PC meets only the minimal system requirements, set up the following graphics settings in the item Settings/Video:
Details: low or medium
These are the obligatory parameters:
FX: Custom
Shadows: Custom or disabled
Disable the HDR parameters, advanced landscape details and objects self-shading.
4.2 AMD
Here you can find the latest drivers for your AMD CPU: (http://support.amd.com/us/psearch/Pages/psearch.aspx?type=2.1&product=&contentType=Tech%20Download%20Processor). Otherwise find it on the game disc in the support folder (version for 32- and 64-bit Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server).
4.3. DirectX®
The game requires DirectX 9.0с (November 2007) or a higher version for correct operation. The installation wizard checks the version of DirectX installed on your PC and if it is out-of-date, it installs an update.
4.4. Sound
Use only the latest versions of drivers for correct game operation. If your PC meets only the minimal system requirements or has an integrated sound card, disable the EAX parameter in the item Settings/Sound.
NOTE! The sound regulator is disabled by default. You can play your favorite music in the game; to do that place your tracks into the <folder name>\Music\Menu to listen to them in the main menu, encyclopedia, Settings menu, etc. and into the <folder name>\Music\Game to listen to them during a battle. The game supports the sound files of all formats, which have the installed DirectShow codecs (see below).
4.5 DirectShow®
The game uses the technology DirectShow® to play the user audio files. This technology allows to eliminate any hindrances in the usage of data formats.
At the same time you may experience problems with non-standard formats (Ogg Vorbis, Musepack, FLAC, Real Audio, etc.). In most cases you will have to installe required codecs/filters, but sometimes there might be conflicts between the installed filters or their malfunctioning.
The majority of conflicts can be solved thorough deregistration of incompatible / damaged filters with the help of GraphEdit [2, 3] applet. The file “Graph.log” generated in the game catalogue contains information about the method of filter application.
1C Company bears no responsibility for the consequences due to the usage of third-party software.

I must be really thick, but I have not been able to identify yet what version of ToW 2 Kursk I have just downloaded from steam. The game does not show it anywhere. And the Steam game library for the game does not show any version number. Also, there are 2 patches I believe recently released by 1C but there is no mention of them in Steam anywhere that I can see.
Where did oyu guys got the version info?

If the version # isn't obvious on the menu screen you could try going to the game exe -
eg in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\...
then right click & choose >properties>details you ought to see a product version field.

Thanks. Got there, but it simply says there are no previous versions (my copy is the ToW 2 Kursk standalone steam download, i.e. not the full ToW package with ToW 1, ToW 2 AK etc)... and still no mention about which one is the current one.
Shall I just download from Battlefront/1C and update manually from the source? Or will this mess up my game?

Thats odd, you did click the correct tab I assume - I ask because a previous versions tab exists as well.
This is what my ToW #1 properties look like.

I wouldn't use the BF patch unless someone can tell you it definitely works. As there have been differences in the patches for different vendors I would expect it to fail to install or eat your game install.
Also the Steam client should advise you of any new patch &/or auto-update.

The Kursk version on Steam is 1.3.3 and it doesn't require any patch.
