View Full Version : Will Nation Red go back to Bullet Engine?

I asked about this in a reply post of mine in regards to someone else mentioning it. I figured i'd make a dedicated thread about it as well.
Point being how long will it be if at all before Nation Red will be re-released with Bullet engine again as the demo uses, or the other suggestion of an in game option to select bullet, physx or nothing at all?
As of right now I can't play the game at all due to physx (yes I tried all the fixes already which I knew wouldn't work before anyway from past physx game experience) whereas the demo with bullet worked fine. No where on the Nation Red store page did it say it used physx. If it had I wouldn't have brought the game since physx never has worked right with my ATI card. However much or little something may cost I don't like to waste money when I don't have that much to spend in the first place:)
Regardless I won't get into the whole nvida thing from months ago with physx as everyone should be well aware of it.
But I do want to be able to play the game though as I enjoyed the demo, and I like to support indie developers when possible and want to continue to do so. Plus I appreciate all the work you've put into this so far (shows you care about the people who play your game:). But if the bullet version won't be released I need to know this asap.
I would hope that a bullet version of the full version is released though instead of using physx. The past Bullet version worked fine for people overall and if something isn't broken then why fix it;)
Thanks in advance for your reply Snow.

Did you try installing an older version of physx? :3

Hello Beukeboom,
Going back to Bullet won't be a problem, it's really just a recompile of the full game and we can do that in literally minutes.
PhysX should run fine for everyone, it's puzzling why some players have this issue with it, it's obviously a driver/version related issue which most people solved by simply restarting their pc.
ATI cards are not a problem, most of the time I'm playing it on an ATI5770 which is a good midrange ATI card and don't see any PhysX issues at all. Nvidia cards are only needed if you want hardware acceleration, but apart from that the PhysX parts are just software drivers. This is of course unless NVidia hardcodes only support for their own cards as JK_DA_KILLA's link mentions.
I mentioned this before but the main reason we switched to PhysX is that over the last month or so a lot of players told us that version actually ran smoother.
But yes, Bullet doesn't have this driver issue, and if the PhysX issue remains for some people even after the Steam client update then going back to Bullet is of course possible, don't worry about that.

See my original post and the part I mention about physx and my
ATI card;) Still appreciate the reply post though and you trying to help, but until it goes back to bullet (if at all) nothing is a go for me with it using physx and i'm not the only one with that issue either:)

That's great news then Snow:) I'll be looking forward to the bullet version then, if the physx issue isn't fixed after the steam client update (hopefully it'll work but as I said from past experience with physx I don't have high hopes of that), but I stil would rather see it as bullet only or the suggested (by another person) in game option of setting either bullet on, physx on or nothing on at all:) Also appreciate the quick and detailed reply by the way:)
Still, the less extra type software that needs to be installed the better. Less chances of something going wrong or having those extras cause issues with something else on the computer:)
Beside that ya, I can understand it being a bit of an enigma that some people are having issues, but like I always say. Every computer is different with so many differnt part makers for motherboards, video cards, etc. there's bound to be some issues. Hell even from personal experience from building computers for 15 years now for myself and others you can have it where two identically built computers with all the same parts and software may operate differently from one another.
It reminds me of the Killing Floor issue in the past where after quiting the game the exe wouldn't terminate for several secords to as much as 30 seconds or more on some computers and not on others (unless you did it manually in task manager). Also some it would happen a lot and others every once in a while. They didn't know why either at the time. Again an example of some weird issue happening in something:)
Anyway, ya I do remember that from another post you made about players saying physx was smoother. I can't say if it is or not since that version won't run but as I said before the demo which used bullet ran perfectly smooth for me. Granted though it goes along with they above that every computer is different and more or less powerful, and will achieve different results in performace of course.
Lastly thanks again for the quick and detailed reply Snow. It's appreciated:) I'll look foward to the update and whatever else may be changed.

Bad news Snow. Before the update I couldn't play due to physx as you know, but could get to the menu (all of which was listed in my original post). Now after getting the update tonight 9-1-2010 and starting the game, I can't even get to the menu. It instantly crashes out now to desktop (yes, I tried the restarting/rebooting from before and other things as well as again a few things I came up with on my own, but no luck:(
It's been almost a month since i've brought the game and haven't been able to play it once. I've only been able to play the demo before I brought the full version. Again as stated before something I wouldn't have done had it listed on the store page that the game used physx (since that program is problematic), which as I stated before it didn't say so on the store page.
I appreciate all the quick replies so far and you (and whoever else:) working to sort out the issues with the game, which isn't easy being an indie developer, which is why I like to support them when possible. But I also don't like wasting money. Regardless of how much or how little it may be.
I'm not trying to be a bother or put any negative energy out there. I just want to be able to play the game already, and why i'm hoping the bullet engine version, or option will come back or come soon since as you said it would be easy to do:)
Anyway, looking forward to your reply Snow, and thanks again for all detailed replies so far. They are appreciated:)

Hello Beukeboom,
I will send you a Bullet version of the game, to see if that fixes your issue. When the game started to use Bullet I had no idea that PhysX could cause major issues for some players:)
Please check your pm in about 4-5 hours. I'd really like to know if PhysX is causing this issue and why only a few people have this. Thanks;)

Many thanks again Snow for the help so far:) I also have good news to report. After putting in the bullet engine version .exe you gave me the game now starts up without crashing AND I can actually start a game mode and play without it instantly crashing like before with the physx version:) (Really that would make it great news and not just good;)
Something else that may be of interest as well. At first I couldn't control anything (mouse and keyboard) after starting a game though I had all my keys binded which was weird. and I don't have a controller connected (I could still bring up the menu again while in game and use the mouse and keys then. I just couldn't make the character do anything after resuming the game). So I took a few minutes checking things in the options menu first.
What I found was the game controller/pad option was turned on even though I didn't have one connected and that overrided the keyboard and mouse binds for some reason, thus making them not work (couldn't even use the mouse to move the characters viewpoint/crosshair). The fix was simple...just switch the game controller/pad option from ON to OFF and the keyboard and mouse binds again controlled the character:)
I figured i'd mention that just in case anyone else didn't realize it if they had that same issue and/or if it was something to do with a change on the .exe:)

Snow
Would this fix my explosion bug error where I crash when there explosions, I assume too many, close to me? I have tried the physx uninstall/install and updated DirectX plus having latest vid drivers. Im running Nvidia 260M card (1.75gig). The crash error states it is a video issue.

Does anybody have a copy of this bullet version to share with me? I would like to see if it allows me to play the game. I've recently upgraded to a 64 bit windows 7 system with an ati5770 and bought this game, but have never been able to play it. I tried all these fixes people have posted such as: downloading physx, downloading directx, updating the C++ redestributables, also verifying integrity and reinstalling the game and trying to play from the .exe instead of steam...None of these have allowed me to play the game yet, it shows "Preparing to launch Nation Red..." and just disappears. When trying to play from the .exe I get an error saying, "C:\Windows\system32\XINPUT1_3.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. etc."

Hmm well XINPUT1_3.dll is a file linked to DirectX not PhysX or Bullet so I'm not sure this other version would fix your problem. There are some steps to trouble shooting your DirectX install...check it out here: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/xinput1_3-dll-not-found-missing-error.htm
Above link was safe for me to use in Firefox...but might have a few pop-ups in IE so be aware :)

Hello f1r3bug,
ChaosStatic is correct that this error has nothing to do with the game or PhysX.
What you've probably got there is when you upgraded to 64 bit Windows, you have some older 32 bit .dlls remaining like the xinput dll which is a DirectX system file to handle Xbox 360 controllers. Try deleting the dll and reinstalling DirectX afterwards. Make sure you get the latest Nov. 2010 update.

I tried all of these xinput1_3.dll fixes none worked. I used the most recent June 2010 directx redistributable pack for the file update as well. :\

still doesn't seem to be working even with deleting and reinstalling directx. I have been running windows 7 64 bit before i even downloaded nation red, I just downloaded it a couple weeks ago but it ever worked. any other ideas of what could be going on?
I found this link to another forum

I might try and format next week if I can't fix it. hopefully that'll fix it ;)
