I was told that I should name it like this or "you may experience problems".

What do u think?

All I know is that u cant rename a file from example.vmf to example1.vmf and not break your model textures. Only way to duplicate is to use saveas from hammer. Also u cant rename .bsp after u buildcubemaps.

Well, the example maps from the SDK are named like example_map_1 and I personally haven't used the asi-* naming convention on any of my maps. No problems here so far.

Where did you hear that it might cause problems? Can anyone confirm this?

yeah, the suggestion in on AS valve wiki
i never had problems namming it "$#!%$%.bsp"
(when i had compile problems) (:
