I've resolved it. Deleted Deus Ex.exe e Deus Ex.ini and made steam download them again.

Deleting the .exe and .ini file within the Steam folder and having Steam automatically reinstall did not work for me (Win 7 64 bit Pro)....What I did was:

1)Download an 'alternate' Deus Ex .exe file (all versions) from here:

2) Copy and replace the Steam version of the Deus Ex .exe file located in the Program files(x86)/Steam/SteamApps/common/deus ex folder with the above downloaded version.

Now works great...I also had the same issue with Hitman Blood Money ("Failed to find Steam" error) and it also repaired that game as well (both Eidos games). These were the only games I received this error out of 40 some odd games purchased through Steam and I believe this is a universal fix for the "Failed to find Steam" error..

Please let me know if this also worked for anyone else (Steam support advised I reinstall windows 7...ugh

Just to clarify, the reason this fixed your problem is because those executables do not have any copy protection (Steam or otherwise). Technically speaking, you didn't really solve your problem, you just worked around it. As long as it does the job for you, though.
