Before the update it could change the name with a command: "name", but with the update, the command stopped working.
Please could you put the command again?

Welcome to last month and the answer is no. They made it like that on purpose. You can change your nick in the steam menu at will now. It will change in-game.

Just because nobody talks about it anymore doesn't mean it all of a sudden stopped being stupid. And of course they made it on purpose, why do you feel you need to state that?
Changing names independently was a personal freedom that they seemingly took away for no reason. My clanleader is a complete idiot and I don't want him to see me play on our regular server. Two months ago that was no problem, but now I have to change my name globally which makes it kind of obvious. Anonymity is one of the main reasons why being online is awesome and someone at Valve decided to take that away for no apparent reason.
Just because you are content with being forced to a single name doesn't mean everybody is.

Wait, how are you forced to play with the same name? Is someone at your home with a gun to your head forcing you to play CS:S? Or maybe your computer is broken and you have to play on that one server and you can't find any others.
If your clan leader is such an idiot, why are you still in the clan? Why is he still the leader?
No one is forcing you to do anything. You are looking for something to cry about. I also think you should look up what the word anonymous means. Do you use your real name? Then that would be your fault.
No one is stopping you from de-friending the guy and setting your profile to private.
They have given you all the tools you need to not have to worry about this guy again. Is it Valve's fault you are to ignorant to know how to use them?

If your clan leader is such an idiot, why are you still in the clan? Why is he still the leader? There are clan leaders who forbid for several reasons to play on pubs. That doesn't mean he is a bad clanleader or that he needs to quit.
No one is forcing you to do anything. You are looking for something to cry about. I also think you should look up what the word anonymous means. Do you use your real name? Then that would be your fault. In internet your nickname IS YOUR NAME. You can't be anonymous if you use your regular nickname. But you can't really change it, because everybody in your friends list then either can't find you, or can find you and your nick. So you can't be anonymous with the current system. The only way to be like that, is if you don't have any friends in your friends list, but then its useless as well, is it?
No one is stopping you from de-friending the guy and setting your profile to private.Wow. What a suggestion. Then he might as well just delete all his friends and play like he normally would, thou then "friends" feature is useless (as I just said).
They have given you all the tools you need to not have to worry about this guy again. Is it Valve's fault you are to ignorant to know how to use them? The only tool we could use is "name" and that has been removed from us. If you are ignorant enough to not understand that, then its your fault.

HaRRiKiRi, if you had even bothered to read that guys post. He is the one who said his clan leader is an idiot, not me.
You can still change your name at will. No one has taken that away from you. You just have to change it in a different way. There is no argument you can make that will add weight to your opinion.
There is no reason to do what you want to do. Every time one of you comes up with a new one, it is so shoe string that it makes no sense.
There is never an occasion that you would need to hide your nick from a server administrator. You have no right to do that no matter what your intentions are.
You only have the right to leave the server. No one is forcing you to play there. Jerk admins or not. They set the rules on the servers that the own. You have no right to make it harder for them to kick you from their server if they deem it so. I'm sorry, but if you don't like it then you can pay for a server and do with it as you wish.
The name command was only used to confuse admins or to be abusive to other players without fear of reprisal. Now you can either be a nice guy, In which no one would care what your steam name is, or if you are playing on their sever, you can be an internet jerk and be labeled as such. In which case, you get what you deserve.
There is no legitimate reason for your in-game nick to be different from your community nick. Non at all. If deception is your goal, then you need to find a new pastime.
CHANGING IT WITH STEAM COMMUNITY IS NOT WHAT WE WANT. CAN YOU READ?
Sorry I had to use caps, but you seem to be just as dense as a thick led wall. We want to change it in-game so that the name in-game is different than the name on the friends list. Please re-read the bold parts you thick person.
Reason for wanted this:
Changing a name or part of it very quickly with a script or simple console option.
Hiding from friends inside a game by having a different name in-game than on the friends list. Anonymity is something the internet is prided over. This is something that all users have the right to have.
Playing CS:S with the steam community overlay crashes CS:S for some of us and thus changing our name with steam community is extraneous and unnecessary.
Changing your name on your friends list can confuse friends who now cannot find a friend on their friends list. Yes some friends are dumb enough, just look at the talent in this thread for reassurance.
It was a feature of the old game which has no reason to be removed. Reasons for it not being in TF2 mean absolutely nothing since TF2 never had this feature in the first place. This has been removed, which means this game previously had this feature. Making excuses how to get around this is absolute absurd. Yes we all know how to use steam community. You can all leave this thread now.
I guess if valve were to swoop in tomorrow and remove avatars and spray paint in TF2, all of you brainwashed lovers would claim that it is possible to just paste a link to an image in the chat box, right? Well guess what, its not the damn point. Its not how you can accomplish something another way by bending over backwards or even pressing another couple buttons. Its about something that has been taken away, and I want it back as I am sure others do as well. A feature has been removed from the game and as a result has lowered the value of this game in my eyes and in others. This feature was something that was loved AND USED frequently. Its removal has caused great grief for the reasons stated above in this post and others in this thread. If some of you still feel the need to point out how to change the name another way then you have missed the point of this post or ignored its message entirely. Please leave this thread and go leave your pointless words where pointless people will read them: Twitter, facebook, myspace, or your journal.

I did read that. A long time ago. There are no points there that strengthen the argument.
Changing a name or part of it very quickly with a script or simple console option.
Why would you need to change your name so quickly?
Hiding from friends inside a game by having a different name in-game than on the friends list. Anonymity is something the internet is prided over. This is something that all users have the right to have.
You do not have the right to deceive people. That is not an excuse. You are already anonymous! How many ♥♥♥♥ing times can I say that?
Read the definition of the word. You are using a fake name name in steam if you are smart. That is what anonymous means FFS. If you don't want certain friends to see when you are playing then you have to option of de-friending that person. If you have to hide from them, then they are not your friends.
Changing your name on your friends list can confuse friends who now cannot find a friend on their friends list. Yes some friends are dumb enough, just look at the talent in this thread for reassurance.
I am not going to elaborate on the idiocy of your friends. That is also not an excuse.

But it was removed for a reason. People used that ability to deceive admins and taunt others. It's a tool for trolls. I suspect the only reason people want this is so they can continue to troll server admins and players alike.
Cry me a river. I wish you could see my tiny violin. It is really a sight to behold.
Oh noes. Now you might just be held responsible for the way you treat people in this community. You don't have to take part in this community at all. You don't have to have any friends. If you wish to be part of this community then you have to follow the rules like everyone else.
BTW that name changer script is going to be dead soon enough as well. Better troll it up while you have the chance.;)
I did read that. A long time ago. There are no points there that strengthen the argument.
Why would you need to change your name so quickly?
Why shouldnt i?
Why should the process of changeing a name get slowed down and more complicated.
And also, what about the people that cant use the overlay? They have to close the game to change name.
You do not have the right to deceive people. That is not an excuse. You are already anonymous! How many ♥♥♥♥ing times can I say that?

If i dont feel like talking with some of the ppl on my friends list, but others id like to talk with.
Then i could change my name ingame, and they wouldnt know who i was, and i would be left alone by them.
I am not going to elaborate on the idiocy of your friends. That is also not an excuse.
Dont you find it anoying at all that your friends change name all the time? They move place in the list all the time. I often have to ask people who they are.

Have you ever been an admin on a css server?
You press the button for your admin menu, then press the punishment you want to give to a player, then press the players name.
How is that affected in anyway by changeing name ingame or in the game overlay?
Also, that wasnt the real reason it was removed. So dont state it as such.

Man I love it when people are ignorant and they try to call me out.
LOL, that is 100% false. If you knew anything, you would know that those are plugins that are installed by the administrator.
The server alone only accepts commands from RCON.
Yes, obviously I own CS:S servers. just becasue someone gave you admin on a plugin laden server doesn't make you an expert. Why don't you go spend some time and actually setup a dedicated server so you will be armed with some knowledge.

IF the ingame overlay isn't working for you then perhaps you should submit a support ticket. That is a bug. It is not a reason to change your name with a console command.

Oh really? Why don't you explain to us the real reason behind the change?

When i use to run a CSS server guess what i installed? One of "those" plugins... Why? So i could punish users without typing in stupid RCON commands...
I fully agree with the OP and others against the ingame name being removed... Some people have different aliases in different games?
Have you played COD:MW2? Loads of people who play that have stupid colour commands like ^8 in their steam friends name... That means everytime you want to swap between CSS and MW2 you have to modify your name...
There is 0 reason not to bring it back ingame... If you aren't the sort to change your alias regularly you dont need CSS to be in sync with your steam friends name... If you are the sort to change aliases regularly/between games then you also dont need CSS to be in sync with your steam friends name.
Troll other admins? It isn't hard for an admin to go into steam overlay and bring up a list of steamfriends who they are CURRENTLY playing with. Easy enough to see if someone is hiding their true alias.. This isn't a valid reason for removing the ingame name.

Instead of arguing how "ignorant" people are for not wanting to use the exact same name in every game, I think you should give us some reasons why it seems to be the best solution to you.
The only one you have come up with so far is to make "trolling server admins" harder, who will ban your steam id anyways if you are annoying them.

It's so annoying that you have to create a new Steam Group each time you play a match which requires you to wear a clan tag. And changing my Steam Community name is not an option.
However we really want the name option back. It was a good part of CS:S before the update.
Anonymous is really nice, when you play on public servers. One argument was that, so your own friends could "regonize" you ingame. That's just dumb... because when somebody changes name 250 times week it really becomes hard to find out who it is.

Wow, a lot of pros and cons, glad I personally dont miss that feature, even though I do understand the people that do.
What happens if you set your friends status to offline, and then change your name via change profile name in steam? Wouldnt that enable you to play kind of anonymous? I have no one at hand here atm to test that.
Man I love it when people are ignorant and they try to call me out.

So you are saying that the in game menu doesnt work like what i just said? It will never be relevant for any admin to know what the steam profile is called. You can ban by the in game name they use, by id, by steamid and by ip. The plugins people use for admin rights does all this for you.
IF the ingame overlay isn't working for you then perhaps you should submit a support ticket. That is a bug. It is not a reason to change your name with a console command.
What if they cant make it work?
Oh really? Why don't you explain to us the real reason behind the change?
Of course.
They changed from an engine with the command enabled, to an engine without the command enabled. So if they wanted to, they would have to enable the name command. And the reason for them not to have it enabled in the OB engine is they want to make it compatible with xbox, ps3 ect when they port it to them.
Theres an interview about it, go google.
EDIT:
Also, could you try getting your point out without beeing hostile and condecending.
Read my posts, i tell the facts as i see them in a neutral tone. Now read your own
posts. All of them are either hostile, or condecending. It doesnt help your point of
view talking like that. If anything it will make people dislike you, and possibly report you.

i made a big thread about it and valve ignored it.
Notsocoolj will always argue with this issue so its best just to not waste your time as it will go in circles
anyway this wont change due to valves bigger plans at intergrating
it went on for ages here and i know the bigwigs read it
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1335080
i would guess they have no intention of bringing it back due to integration with other products part of the steamworks

NotSoCoolJ brings up points that are hard to argue against and the opposing arguments are weak from what I see:
Since there is a bug in the overlay, that affects the minority, not majority, the name command should be re-implemented, so those people can still change their name quickly and often, screw cross-platform compatibility!
In case I want to hide from my friends in servers, despite the fact they can still go to Server Info under my steam friends name and figure out what server i'm in, the name command should be re-implemented, and I won't even get into the fact that they're on my friends list in the first place.
In case I want to, instead of using the name as a unique form of identification, use it to display annoying phrases that I will be consistently changing, I think the name command should be re-implemented.

Yes, we can still change the name at will. But why should it be changed to what it is now, and not stay like its allways been? Theres no gain from that. It slows down the name changeing process. And your friends will have new names every day. So you have to check the pictures and hope they didnt change them too.
No, its not used to hide from an admin or troll a server.
Use the admin menu that comes with all admin plugins. No one can hide. Theres no reason to use the steam friends name here. There are no reason for an admin to visit your steam page. It cant be used to do any "admining"

The change for the client side plugin will be applied to normal css, unless you heard somewhere else it wont. With the exception of the few things mentioned when beta was first reopned (vsync, hdr, motion blur).. everything in the beta will eventually be applied to regular CSS.
