Took me about 40 hours, doing almost all side quests, but not spending any time on swoop racing (used mod).

From what I hear, KotOR2 The Sith Lords is no where near as good. Are any of the other Star wars games even RPGs or all action/shooters or even MMO games?? (do NOT want to play MMO or shooters)

Was looking at Gothic 2 and/or 3, but opinion is really divided there also, especially about #3

Any suggestions?

btw: already played Fallout 1/2/3, Elder Scrolls (all) DA, ME 1/2, Bioshock 1/2, Torchlight, M&M8/9 (may go back and get #1-6 package), Master of Orion (3?),Of Steamworks and Magic...; last summer I got desperate and re-played Eye of Beholder 1/2/3

EDIT: forgot to mention Dragon Age also finished

Well, I would think you'd want to at least TRY Sith Lords. Be warned though, the one thing that is universally hated is the ending.

As for MMOs, you should know what is out there and make a decision on that. If you're not into MMOs yet then I would lay back and wait for the KotOR MMO. I'll see you there.

One game rather similar to KotOR even though it's a shooter is Deus Ex. Moral choices that effect the story, arranged dialogue options, RPG elements, and about as gripping a story. Don't play Deus Ex 2 though I have noticed that KotOR and DE2 look pretty much EXACTLY the same in terms of graphics. And Deus Ex 3 is coming out so woot.

A couple Star Wars games are said to stack up, but only in terms of a Star Wars experience. Star Wars Jedi Knight Collection is available for $20 on Steam and follows the epic saga of smuggler Kyle Katarn (sp?) through the span of 4 very critically acclaimed games. Of course there's Battlefront 2, which is my kind of multiplayer. Lego Star Wars is pretty fun, though I'd suggest renting it for a console. Those looking to be a Stormtrooper can look at Republic Cammando. And finally there's the RTS Empire at War.

If you've played Torchlight, I hope you've played the REAL game: Diablo 2.

That's about all that comes to mind in terms of PC. Hope you find this list useful.

Dragon Age is the next best thing... Slightly diffrent gameplay but still a great rendition of KoToR in a newer form.

Do NOT want to play MMO type games. Is the Jedi Knight collection RPG or shooter?

Real Time Strategy is a real joke - RTS games are all about speed in entering commands : I read somewhere about the Korean kid who is THE champion of Warcraft (I think) who can enter 300 commands/minute.

Only turn based games for me!

thnx

If you like Fantasy settings, I can suggest you Dragon Age, The Witcher and Drakensang.

ONLY turned based games? I can assure you that the genre is in abundance, but that seems rather mundane honestly. I need a break from my Persona 4 every now and then. It's good to diversify your mindset.

RTSs are only played fiercly if it's competitive. A story mode though is usually very straightforward and one detailing the battles of the Star Wars universe is a cool concept, no? I guess I can't dissuade you but keep it in mind.

Jedi Knight collection is 1 shooter and 3 action/adventure games. I guess technically you don't even need to play the shooter, Dark Forces. The second one is part shooter but you do get a lightsaber. The 3rd one is said to be the best Star Wars game, even surpassing KotOR. It's a third person action game that allows you to control Jedi powers in real time like a real badass.

I really suggest trying at least one of the Kyle Katarn saga out.

Turn based (or at least "pause-able") because I don't want my reaction speed and eye to hand co-ordination to be the limiting factor in the fights. Mass Effect was about the limit of shooter type play I can handle, MEI being much more tactical than II.

The Neverwinter Nights series is pretty awesome. Character creation especially is fantastic, you can spend hours just planning every detail of your character progression.. of course that can actually be a problem for some people who get elder scrolls syndrome and cant decide what kind of character they want.

Ok, from what I wrote I see you have great taste in games, so I'll give you good advice. DO play SW:KotOR2:TSL. It is a bit worse than KotOR but I know a lot of people how actually think it's better then the first part. But what you need to know is that without the previous part present, the game would have gotten the best reviews ever. The problem is in comparison. Go and play it to judge for yourself. Now for what else you can play:

-Alpha Protocol (Obsidian, Action/RPG It's not bad, it's underrated)
-Baldur's Gate 1,2(Bioware, RPG that began they reign of best games in the world)
-Neverwinter Nights 1 (Bioware) and 2 (Obsidian)(Both RPG)
-The Witcher (Awesome RPG with Bioware level of choice/consequence)
-Okami (Adventure RPG, either PS2 or Wii needed, but it's worth it, this one game makes it worth the money to actually buy a console)
-Braid (A tale of Time, also one of the best games ever)
-Fahrenheit (aka Indigo Prophecy, a must-play for any gamer)
-Heavy Rain (PS3, basically Fahrenheit 2.0, pure awesomeness)
-The Last Express (first real-time quest in the world with about 34 endings)
-also make sure to play King's Bounty: The Legend, you will definately like it.

KotOR 2 is actually quite fun. I agree, I didn't like it as well as the Bioware's game but it was still polished and enjoyable.

Gothic 2 is great, I liked it a lot. The third part is kinda meh but is still fun.
I could also recommend Witcher, very interesting game.
Vampire: Bloodlines is a great RPG/Action mix. Great story, interesting characters, one of my favourite games.
Oh, and you must play Planescape: Torment. It's got the most interesting story ever. Unfortunately it's quite hard to find these days.

a must-play for any gamer
Totally disagree on that one. The story is absolutely ridiculous, it's like the writers slapped every possible stupid idea together. Highly disappointing. The gameplay is quite interesting, though, I give you that.

OK, I can agree that the ending in Fahrenheit is beyond ridiculous, but the beginning and the early middle of the game are a masterpiece.

OK, I guess I'll go with KotOR2. Witcher sounds like fun for the future, but Fallout New Vegas is coming up next month.

thnx to all for suggestions

edit: maybe I'll get lucky and TSL will be on sale this week like KotOR1 ($2.50 today)

I can see you don't really mind old games much so I will recommend Deus Ex and the System Shock series

KOTOR 2 is better in some ways than the first game so I highly suggest that one. It's not as polished thanks to either LucasArts pushing it out too soon or Obsidian's inability to finish it on time. There is a great mod out there that restores missing content and fixes a lot of the bugs.

Dragon Age is another fantastic choice. Be wary of the DLC. Some is quite good (Leliana's Song and Golems of Amgarrak) and some is terrible (Witch Hunt and Darkspawn Chronicles).

I pretty much agree on Dragon Age DLC, except for Darkspawn Chronicles. Sure, it wasn't that good, but I can forgive it anything for the name of Mabari in it. Golems of Amgarrak were the best, I beat it on Insane, after that the ending is mind-shattering. Also, Warden's Keep, Return to Ostagar and Stone Prisoner (ESPECIALLY Stone Prisoner) are excellent.

I'd say you could try the King's Bounty games too. Kind of RPG with turn based combat - I had a lot of fun playing almost 90 hours on the first game alone (The Legend).

In addition I very much enjoyed Jade Empire, it's only a very lightweight kind of RPG, but the game as a whole is very good.

Already listed but I can add my vote for The Witcher as well as Fahrenheit.

And if you think about the Gothic games you may start with the first one, it's old but still a pretty decent game.

Tell me about it, it's the thing with Katauri games, you think you come to play for an hour, 8 hours later you find yourself saying "just 30 more minutes".
If you like The Legend, you should play King's Bounty: Armored Princess and Space Rangers 2: Dominators by the same studio, both masterpieces.

(Yay, 400th post!)

I second (or third) Jade Empire. It is also a Bioware RPG, very much in the style of KOTOR, albeit with the eastern/martial-arts flair. Some say it's a bit lighter, but I really enjoyed it. Great story and characters, and some very moving moments.

Oh, and The Witcher, of course. Different feel to it, but absolutely incredible.

Jade Empire is a bit too combat-oriented, but I agree, it is enjoyable. Also, I remembered 2 more must-play RPG's - Final Fantasy VII and Planescape: Torment.

KOTOR2 is better in every way except for the missing 40% of the game. That was because they were only given a year to release it. It was NOT Obsidian's fault.

If you don't mind the age, try the Wizardry 6/7/8 series. Great RPG and heaps of fan based mods for 8 to really ramp up the difficulty.

Loved the System Shock games, I consider SS2 to be the single scariest game I ever played! But the games seem to be unavailable - apparently SS2 doesn't run well on XP or Win7, and owner doesnt want to spend effort to update it:(

I started to play one of these, not sure which, but the graphics were just too dated, just couldn't stand it. For comparison of graphics, I did re-play Eye of the Beholder last year, its graphics were just, barely, acceptable.

What game did you ultimately decide on? Or have you yet? I am interested to hear your opinion.

Your post hit my dilemma dead-on; I just finished KotOR and am starved for a similar RPG/turn-style/action game with a solid storyline. I have researched The Witcher, King's Bounty, Dragon's Age, and Fallout 1/2/3, to just name a few.

People seem to love The Witcher, and King's Bounty piqued my interest, as did Dragon Age, and all three of these titles have received solid reviews, but the icing on the cake for KotOR was I paid <$3.00 for one of the best single player games I have played and I think that spoiled me.

I am interested to hear what game you eventually land on.
