View Full Version : UT3 Hangs at Init: Friendly System Settings:

Hey there,

I've been encountering this problem since 3 years...I tried .ini file tweaks, openAL modification, updating my bios and sound card driver ... But UT3 keeps hanging at the splash screen ...

I looked through the log file and found out that it stops writing more data right after Init: Friendly System Settings

I hope I can help...

Go to your UTEngine.ini and find the line "MaxMultisamples" and make sure it =1. Your log ends at the MSAA line which might indicate that this line has been changed to an unacceptable value. Earlier in the log it shows the correct value, but who knows. If you are forcing AA thru drivers, then turn it off.


If that doesn't work, the first thing you should do is delete the Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\ this will remove all custom content (mods, ini files, etc) and force UT3 to rebuild the INI files.

I can see that you manually changed values in your UTEngine.ini which is not necessarily the best way to do things. For instance, the AllowD3D10=False line shouldnt be changed, as it doesnt actually do anything. other values, if changed to a number UT3 doesn't like, can cause the game to crash every time. It happened to me and I reinstalled the whole thing, and it happened again. Once I deleted my custom ini files, it started working again. Since then I have made sure to keep a backup of my default INI files just in case i mess up something by accident.

Believe me, I tried the D3D10 line. The game still runs in DX9 and looks the exact same.. People who tell you otherwise, like "but it allows dx10 effects like bloom and depth of field" are wrong, since DX9 is able to do all these things, and they can be manually enabled individually, or enabled as a group by setting World Detail to 5 in the in-game settings.

so yeah, delete custom content, clear the "launch options" in steam for UT3 (-nomoviestartup shouldn't cause a problem, but I don't know why you have "editor" in there), and do the standard update drivers/directx and verify integrity of game cache and defrag and bla bla bla. it is also possible that you have some background tasks that slow things down while gaming, I would recommend giving Game Booster 1.51 a try. it works great for me on my 2 machines (one is similar to yours, q9550 quad core 2.83gHz with Vista home premium 64bit)

I checked MaxMultisamples and it is already set to 1. So I deleted my UT3 folder and ran the game, the problem is still there, and here is the new log :

I also did the other things such as defragment and verify and whatnot but that didnt fix it...

Im not sure why unreal hates my PC ...

I forgot to mention something important, UT3 used to run perfectly before ... After the crash I didnt bother fixing it. So I cant actually restore to a point before the hang (cant remember when the problem started), and nor can I figure out what caused the crash (probably an update?). I reverted back to SP1 but that didnt work, so I got SP2 back installed.

Any ideas ? Please help !

Yeah its a cut off, im not sure why it stops there ... it couldnt even continue the Yres=600 .. Im not sure why this happens.

Please can someone help me ?

I know you don't want to hear this, but maybe it's time to start from scratch.

Reinstall UT3, and don't modify any ini files. see if it works.

do you have any other games that run on DX9? do they work? it might be time to reinstall DirectX and video card drivers.

EDIT: some mods can be installed directly to the steamapps\common\unreal tournament 3\UTGame directory, so they can be accessed by all users. check that out and see if there's anything weird.

Thanks for replying.

I did re-install it many times without editing the ini .. I dont have any mods installed .. it just doesnt want to start ..

I got a couple of games that dont work as well, battlefield bad company 2, Dogfighter, Crazy machines, Audiosurf and World In Conflict ..

Im really baffled since I dont know why those games wont work. Do you think its something to do with my video/sound cards ?
I got 2 HD 3800 crossfired together, I tried disabling the crossfire, but nothing happened...

Not an optimal solution, but have you considered removing one of the video cards and test with just one? Also, do you have the latest Windows updates, including Service Pack 2?

While it is possible that each of those games has a unique problem, it's more likely that there is a common problem... You OS, drivers, DirectX, or graphics cards.

Can you list what games DO work?

Had the same problem, the game hung up on the splash screen.

This solved the issue for me:

If you are experiencing lockups or crashing, do the following:

1) Disable OpenAL in-game.

2) If you are unable to disable OpenAL that without the game locking up or crashing first, then disable sound by editing your UTEngine.ini, launch the game to disable it, then re-edit the UTEngine.ini to enable sound again. Look for the following lines:

[Engine.Engine]
bUseSound=False

and

[Engine.GameEngine]
bUseSound=False

3) Uninstall OpenAL in the Add/Remove Programs control panel.

If disabling or uninstalling OpenAL does not fix the problem, or the crashing occurs while there is no sound, then try options to resolve video card or CPU-based issues.

4) If any other ATI card users are having that problem Enable the Support DXT texture formats in the 3D main side menu and under More Settings.
