Hello i see many people saw they can't get Kotor running well its not Kotor its your drivers...

i had to do this many times before where ATI's newest drivers screwed something up in the OpenGL dll (this also works for older cards but i would have to upload an older DLL)

this DLL is taken from CCC 10.4 (if you don't trust the DLL DOwnload 10.4 and get it!)

http://www.filefront.com/17239782/atioglxx.dll

put this in your steamapps/common/swkotor

if it doesn't work please post your video card

IF YOU HAVE 10.8 Try and run the game first if it doesn't work use my fix (thank you McChadworth)

please post your feedback...

Thanks man, that really solved my problem !

I have Win7 64bit and Radeon HD 4870 with the latest driver installed.

Kotor bought over steam just would not start, nothing happened when pressing "play" or klicking the exe. Now with this file, everything works fine !

Thanks again :D

I was unsure about buying this game (even if its on sale for $2.50) because of the trouble with glitches I had playing this a few years ago.

Seeing this post gave me confidence to try the game out again, but it turns out that this fix is no longer needed to get a ATi 4870 to run it. I am using the newest drivers, 10.8, and everything seems operable right now. I'll report back latter if I run into any other problems.

I haven't been able to play KOTOR for several years since I purchased a new PC with an ATI HD4670. After reading the above I was hoping to add the game on Steam for this great price rather than keep track of the actual game discs.

Unfortunately upgrading to the 10.8 drivers for my HD4670 didn't solve my problems (XP SP3). As soon as I click play on either KOTOR or KOTOR2 my PC reboots and I have to remove the disc for the OS to load which is what happened with previous driver version. I assume the Steam version would cause a reboot as well.

Anybody know if my issue might lie somewhere else other than the ATI drivers?

Thanks for the fix, however after putting the dll file in the right place, it worked ONCE, allowing me to get to the main menu. After that it does the same as before, I get the lucas arts logo screen then the game crashes.

Re-downloading and replacing the ddl file didn't work.

I'm on Win7 32bit, HD5850 with 10.8 drivers.

personally, i find it unreasonable to update to the latest CATALYST drivers. I use the 10.3 ones since they released, plus catalyst isnt the drivers, it's the gui suite. drivers can still be updated regularly, minus the catalyst software.

so my grievance is that I play every new high end game right up to metro2033, the idea that this old ♥♥♥ game somehow got a FIX from catalyst drivers released THIS year? yeah im sure ati was still developing changes in the 2010 gui to accomodate a 7 year old game.. come on.

bottom line, if you get the latest catalyst suite, wave goodbye to borderlands and some other new games, cuz it effectively destroys them until reformat. so ask yourself if the 2.50 is worth crushing some of the most legit u3 games being released.

Similar to plain sight, another midweek madness game released that I bought and won't get to play. kudos steam.

Idk... ( i don't have a nvidia card right now to test it with) the only way you can is if you find the Nvidia OpenGL DLL (i don't know the name)

i would suggest finding one of the Nvidia drivers that worked with it

With some Searches i found some Help threads that may help you

http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=195844

What you could also do is Download the drivers that worked with Kotor and get the nvidia OpenGL DLL from them (you may need to install it to get it)

the name of the openGL DLL for Nvidia drivers is nvoglnt.dll (atleast i think it is)

sorry if i can't be more help to you

crap! same problem (but on HD4870 with 10.9 drivers), but my first time wouldn't let me select anything from the menu. :(

Edit: I can get around that by running swconfig.exe and selecting "Disable Movies".

Thanks on trying to help me, sadly enough none of the thing I tried worked :( I'm going to try and uninstall all my drivers, run a driver sweeper and then reinstall the latest driver to see if that works. I only have one perhaps a bit noobish question, how do I uninstall my graphics drivers?

EDIT: I did it and it didn't work :( I read on the forum link you posted that I might need to get driver 177.1, but I can't find it anywhere and I am afraid it doesn't work with my videocard. I rolled back to the oldest driver I could find for my video card.

EDIT 2: Now I did manage to find 177.92, but as I expected it doesn't support my video card. I did find 178.13 though which is the earliest drive to support my video card, I'm going to try it out right now.

I've had no game starting issues on 10.5 and now 10.9 drivers. W764 5850.

I do have to run windowed [AllowWindowedMode=1 + Fullscreen=0] to avoid crashes. But I have to do that on my WinXp32 IntelG31 graphics machine too [in fact thats worse on planet transition crashes]

Unfortunately this doesn't work for me. I have tried everything and would appreciate some help. I have a Sony Vaio (E-Series) with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 (driver 8.672.1.2000). Windows 7 64-bit. Intel Core i5 CPU 2.40Ghz. 4gb RAM.

This (http://forums.techarena.in/monitor-video-cards/1342473.htm) page says the card should work but it doesn't. I press play, the picture of the ship shows, disappears and nothing happens. I have tried running as admin, setting it to compatibility mode, copying across the updated versions of the atioglxx file, the mss32.dll file etc, I have updated drivers, installed/updated the DXSDK, I have added the Vertexbuffer line to the swkotor.ini file and toggled play videos etc. Nothing. Just the ship and then nothing. Can anyone please suggest something else? I've never played KotOR and I'm very keen to!! :(

Before I play the game, the character models parts (arms, heads, etc) are separated from each other. I'm not how well I can explain this but I know when I choose a character profile, the model of the character is distorted, like all you can see is the eyes, mouth and eyebrows without the head and everything else.

Ill post it here too. The disabling the movie sold my problem but i dont want to play the game without being able to see any of the cutscenes. I have a 5850 with 10.10 catalyst. Windows 7. I tried the 10.4 dll and it allowed me to run the game once. Made a char, made a save then the character stoppped moving around and i restared only to crash on the desktop. It does that every single time with movies enabled. Any ideas?

It didn't work. I have the game on Vista. When I run the game, it doesn't crash. When I play the game, the character's body moves on his side and his head floats alongside it. :( Even the other characters are like that.

Very grateful for this thread. Thank you, everybody.

I'm using a Radeon Mobility 5850 with Windows 7 64-bit. None of the .dll patches did anything for me, but disabling the movies in the config file makes it start. This is a good thing.

Any thoughts on how to make it run full-screen, though? I have a 27" IFS display, and it's running in probably 30% of my screen...!

You would have to do a Widescreen fix

I did it myself for my 21 inch 1680x1050 display

This doesn't work for me.

Specs:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530/4570

Driver Packaging Version 8.65-090813a-087735C-ATI
Catalyst™ Version 09.9
Direct3D Version 6.14.10.0697
OpenGL Version 6.14.10.8918
Catalyst Control Center Version 2009.0925.1707.28889

Running Windows XP SP3, on a Toshiba Laptop I bought one year ago (Satellite L350-21U).
I can't install the latest drivers from ATI because they don't do them for WinXP. (those bastards)

Edit: it's definitely a driver issue (I think). I've had problems with OpenGL in other games on this computer too. So I guess only ATI is to blame here.

I have played KotoR at least once a year since it came out. Last year, I got it on the PC via Steam and was thrilled to have some new content (however little it was). Since then, I have built myself a new PC with an ATI 5870.

I think you can guess what comes next...

KotoR won't work!

When I first booted KotoR, it would show that it was running in the system tray but the screen never showed up. I restarted the game a few times and it finally popped up. I went through the process of creating a new character and started the game. As soon as I got to the first dialogue with Trask, I could no longer click on the dialogue options. The mouse cursor moved, but would not respond to right or left clicks. After some frustration I restarted the game. When I reentered the game and got to the main menu, I couldn't click on anything or even get the mouse to move!

I went in and disabled hardware mouse but then the mouse cursor itself didn't even show up when I restarted the game. I re-enabled the Hardware mouse and can now move (but not click) on the main menu. I went in and put the atioglxx.dll into the swkotor folder but that didn't seem to help anything. I was really pleased to buy KOTOR at a bargain price from steam. Until I tried to play it, and it didn't work. Come on steam, this is why console owners are all smug like!

I tried about 4 different fixes, here is the one that worked for me, I hope this helps someone. I have Windows 7 64 bit.

Open this file by pasting it in your run menu
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\swkotor\swkotor.exe
When you can see the file, highlight it, Right Click it and select Properties from the right click menu. Click the Compatbility tab and do the following:
Check the box to Disable Visual Themes
Check the box to Disable Desktop Composition
Check the box to display scaling

Close that shizzle, and start the game. Mine worked (phew)

My PC is running Windows 7 64bit. If there is any more information needed to rectify the problem let me know and I will provide it!

Thank You in advance to whoever fixes this!

I too have the 5870 and was getting the same problem. I went to the properties in:

steamapps>common>swkotor>swkotor.exe

set it to:
-run in Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
-Disable visual themes
-Disable desktop composition
-Disable display scaling on high DPI settings
-run this program as an administrator

and it worked for me. The only problem I have is that after about 10 min of game play my WASD movement keys freeze up. All other keys worked. I can save it and reload to fix it but i just becomes annoying after a while. Can anyone fix this. Thanks.

Does not work on XFX HD6870 on 32bit XP SP3. Also tried the dll from the 32bit 9.12 hotfix.

I've tried this game with windowed mode, disabling movies/hardware mouse, disabling visual themes, disabling steam community in game, running swupdate, running scan hardware all to no avail...
