Hey guys,

I too purchased Ship Simulator and then found it didn't work.... did some digging around in the program directory and it looks like there's an installation script that isn't being run for some reason.

Anyway, I managed to get my game to work; I was getting the "Language Not Supported" error, here's how I did it -- I'm not sure if all the steps are necessary but this is what I did.

First some background: I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit edition. Downloaded the game and ran it, only to get the abovementioned error message (Steam _did_ provide me with a CD key, so I didn't have that problem).

There were two things I did that got the game working, I'm just not sure if it was one of them or both that did it :) Your mileage may vary.....

1. First install and run the game, when you get the "Language Not Supported" message just exit.
2. Run regedit. Look for a key in your registry called 'Vstep', it should be under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
3. Under that key, there should be another key called "ShipSimExtremes" or "ShipSimulatorExtremes" (can't remember exactly off the top of my head, I'm not at my gaming machine).
4. Add a string value under that key called "Language_Ingame". Set the value to EN
5. Exit registry editor

Now, re-launch Steam and try running the game again. You may still get the error message. If so, here's the second thing I did.

1. Exit Steam entirely.
2. Go to your C:\Program Files\Steam directory (on Windows 64-bit it'll be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam'.
3. Right-click on the Steam.exe icon and select "Run as Administrator...."
4. When Steam comes up, launch Ship Simulator.

At this point, I got the 'License Check' window asking me to type in my CD key; I had gotten past the 'Language Not Supported' error.

After you've done this, you can run Steam normally (exit Steam and then re-start it as your normally would, NOT AS ADMINISTRATOR) and the game should work fine after that.

Some other things:

The UI is very glitchy. If something doesn't seem to work when you click on it, try double-clicking. I had some issues when first creating my profile - I had to click exactly on the '+' icon in the create profile icon (you'll see what I mean after you enter your CD key) and when choosing options from the drop-down menus occasionally I'd have to double-click also.

Another thing, if you look under your Steam\steamapps\common\ship simulator folder, somewhere under that are installation files for the DirectX runtime, the PhysX runtime and the Visual C++ redistributable files. You might want to try running these EXEs if you have any other problems running the game. Again I assume they should be getting run when the game is first launched from Steam but aren't for some reason.

Well that's it, off to boating after all that :) Any questions just post 'em in this thread and I'll do my best to answer if I can. Hope this helps someone.

Try running Steam as an administrator and launching the game; that's what I ended up having to do to get past the error. Once I had done it once I could then just run Steam normally and the game kept working after that.

I gleaned the registry change from looking at a file called InstallScript that was in the Ship Simulator program directory. It mighht be unnecessary (running Steam as an admin might have let the install step run properly). What actually happened with me is I tried the registry change, en ran the game and still got the error. So I shut down Steam comp, etely and then had the idea of running Steam as an admin to see if that would let the install step run properky.

It worked, I just don't know whether it worked because I shut down Steam and then reloaded it after I'd changed the registry, or if changing the registry manually had nothing to do with it and it was just that I had run Steam as an administrator that finally fixed it :)

Having said all that, yeah it definitely needs some patching to fix this issue. Once inside the game, it's been fine for me so far (except for the glitchy GUI I mentioned in my first post).

Yup, everyone make sure you run as adminstrator after the registry fix. That worked for me and I'm on Vista 64. I just have the blue ocean/no menu problem now. *sigh*

One more thing when you get to the ocean screen try moving your mouse into the middle of the screen. You should see a white icon with a plus sign in the middle of it fade in. Double click the plus sign to create your new profile.

When I first got to that ocean screen I thought it was stuck too; it's just not designed too well lol.

If you have trouble selecting your country from the drop down list, try double clicking. If you click the 'Create Profile' button and nothing happens, try clicking it a few more times.

Very glitchy, but it did work for me.

First of all, thanks a bunch for your help with that language error!
And I have created the profile but after that is when I'm having some problems. I'm gonna try the method from shipsim forums to see if that works.

Also guys remember once you have run Steam as admin, don't forget to quit your Steam client and reload it as a normal user, just to be on the security safe side.

So the language error went away but I cant get the menu to show up. I only see the blue ocean and I can look around but nothing else. Tried the method in shipsim forums for the no menu issue and it didnt work for me. :/

It's probably clutching at straws lol but I remember the first time I launched the game and got to the cd key screen I actually had to cancel and quit because I didn't have the CD key on hand to type in.

I think I may have rebooted at some point too, maybe try that if u haven't already then try re-running the game. Thats all I can think of.

Update for my luck. Or lack of.

I tried again this morning, persistent as I am....

Desktop system running Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 Bit iCore 7 and ATI 5870 card.
Simply started with Steam.exe in directory as Admin and then tried SSE.
It started up and this time asked for KEY. Entered this and it took me to profile. Filled in this info and it gave me an Error. But it then took me to menu and I was afloat in my boat. Woohoo......

Laptop on the other hand.... Asus G73JH-A2 I had previously tried the regedit language thing so I cleared this out. Tried a Steam start from the directory using Steam.exe and right click start as Admin. Then open SSE from the library. This also took me to the enter KEY thing... Yay. My day is getting better. Got to the profile stage and this time no error. Hmmmm

Now my laptop has a real nice screen with waves and music..... No menu.....

WTF. One system good to go... The other Nada.

I guess you just have to be lucky with this one......
May the force be with you all.

It's just a hunch, but I notice that when the game starts, it goes to shipsim.com to fetch the latest news; I wonder if the static screen people are seeing might have something to do with their firewall trying to stop the program or something.

Just a thought, tho I wouldn't go disabling my firewall for the thing.

The Steam update should fix your "sea only" problem (not seeing the main menu), since the menu is shown after the update.
