I had the same problem. Going to C:\Program Files (x86)\Creative\OpenAL and re-running oalinst.exe fixed it. Hope it works for you guys.
The game wont work here also press Play in steam the GRID launch box appears and then goes away. nothing after happens.
Well thanks steam and codemasters fore a game that not workes
Atleast its only 4e something and it goes to charity
you just could put a bankaccount fore charity on steam this way i could send 4 e there and dont have a headache about a game thats worthless
I7 windows7 64bit 6gig mem ati hd 5700
Could it be ati cards related?
Dingo77
07-21-2011, 05:21 PM
no it's not ATI related. I bought the game a few days ago and cannot get it to start. I am running Core2 Duo E8400 @ 3ghz, Win7 64bit, Nvidia 9800 1gb and 6 gb RAM. Whenever i start it what happens is I get the Grid logo on black background and then that's it game stalls. Task manager say's not responding.
I tried around 10 various tweaks from compatability to -novirtual, as well as deleting the hardware settings config and everything else I could find on these and other forums. No luck, don't really mind as it was only $5 but I wish I could at least see it. On a side note a friend of mine bought Cliffs of Dover yesterday and his game is also not responding when started. He has an up to date system compared to mine.
Any ideas feedback welcome.

I am also having this problem with GRID.
I've *just* deleted and re-installed, to no avail. The little Steam app-launcher box flicks open for a moment, then closes (as it does before most other games), and then nothing happens.
Edit: Task Manager does not show any instance of the game running - it doesn't launch at all. No GRID-related parasoftware displays whatsoever.
Edit 2:
OEM Q6600
6gb RAM
Zotac 2gb GTX460
I also had issues launching this game a few weeks ago on the same system, but with a 512mb BFG 8800GTS (and so would presume the graphics card in this case to be irrelevant).

Somebody who tried this? I have a Intel core Quad Q6600 2,40GHz with 4 GB RAM, a nVidia 9600 GT running on windows Vista. It works fine for me. No problems at all.
Are there people running this game on windows 7? If so, that might be the problem. Try the solution told by this guy. It might help...

Sorry for double post, but i was reading for some solutions.
Codemaster released some patches:
Patch 1.1: http://www.gamershell.com/download_27498.shtml
Patch 1.2: http://www.gamershell.com/download_28828.shtml
Patch 1.3: http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/10/13/download-grid-v1-3-patch/
I think you only need the newest path, so that would be v1.3.
These patches should be also avaible at the official site from Codemasters but somehow i cannot enter the site completely. http://community.codemasters.com/forum/grid-english-language-community-947
I also read something about a dude having the same problem but fixed it when updating his audiodrivers.
While reading several post, i think the problem lies with the windows system. Windows 7 gives many people problems running this game. I don't have problems so i cannot try these patches in order to see if they work.
I hope this info might help some of you a bit.
EDIT: If this all doesn't work you might you can try to open the game in compability mode, altough i'm not sure if that works cause it's using steam.

Try the following:
Go to steam -> library
Right click on GRID -> properties
Click on set launch options
Type -novirtual
Try to launch the game now.

Running Win 7 64bit, Nvidia GTX 590, Core i7 2600k, 8 GB ram. Googled the ever-living snot out of this problem and still haven't been able to get this to work. OpenAL fixes, -novirtual, -safemode: you name it, I've tried it.
Very disappointing.
That worked ConcreteDonkey thanks!

For a few day I have searched forums looking for a solution to this and eventually found one, but these are the things I tried 1st.
System
intelq9550 quad
ati 4870 x2 (crossfire disabled, have alot of stability issues)
creative x-fi extreme
rampage mobo
8gig ram.
Vista 64
Things I have tried so far to get it running.
Reinstalled
-novirtual command
disc drawer open, launch game, close disc drawer
compatibitly mode, both xp and win 98
creative openal udated
renamed grid.exe
disabled sound card
update window live
another suggestion was to turn off hyper threading in bios, couldn't find an option
downloaded a utility from netcore.com/4gb_patch
turned setpoint off and unplugged his xbox controller
reinstalled directx
disabled AV
Did all this again with version 1.0 and after 1.3 patch to noavail.
What happens is the grid logo on a dark screen loads, but then nothing, I have to crtlaltdel and end task as it always show grid not responding.
The only time I have seem to progress was with chaning the hardware_settings_restrictions.xml in grid/system to try and force the game to run on 4 cores, alas this still didnt work and when I crtlaltdel the task manager apears but really slow.
One last ditch attempt, I unplugged my speakers and usb headset, and it works, albeit no sound and haven't found a solution to this yet, maybe someone out there might have it (latest driver installed).

I had same problems listed by many above, using windows 7 64-bit, downloaded and installed this file
openal windows installer (http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/oalinst.zip)
and it worked fine, prior to this i could find no versions of openal anywhere on my system, nor on my other 2 systems that run this exact same os.

Same here but with Windows XP, AMD Athlon II x2, 4gb DDR3. Radeon 5670 1gb - doesn't launch. I'm not going to even bother installing it on my high end Quad core, Win7, Crossfire (2x Radeon 5870s) rig. If XP can't get it going then Win7 has no chance.

I had the same problem. Going to C:\Program Files (x86)\Creative\OpenAL and re-running oalinst.exe fixed it. Hope it works for you guys.
Went into the steam files and changes grid.exe to run in compatibility mode XP service pack 3 and at least when I launch now I get an error.
"the program can't start because OpenAL32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."
So running oalinst.exe might be a fix.
No good for me though I don't have the C:\Program Files (x86)\Creative folder on my computer. I also don`t want to go downloading that OpenL32.dll file from creative because I`m don`t know what the hell it is. I think it has something to do with sound drivers since its from creative but I have realtek drivers on my computer. I`m just worried if I install that OpenAL32.dll thing it`s going to mess up my sound.
so grid becomes the third daily deal from steam that won`t run a modern computer....

got it working by accident, just cleaning up drivers and it seems the audio driver was the culprit, specifically an old uninstalled driver screwing it up.
by the looks of it someone else had the same issue/fix too.

If it appears to be Win 7, what about compatability mode?
My Radeon 5850 has no problem on XP, so i doubt it's that.
You guys have the latest DirectX, latest drivers, and such?
What about your soundcard? Audio seems to be at the root of the problem for most. What if you disable the sound device?
...Are there people running this game on windows 7? If so, that might be the problem.
Hi all :)
To answer the above question, yes there are. I'm running it on Win 7 (32 bit), and my Brother is running it on 64 bit version, no problems at all.
I tried the demo of the game before I bought it on Steam, just to see if it worked ok, got it from Gamershell. Maybe trying the demo will answer some questions, if that works ok, it could be Steam-related, but not sure

So, has anyone found the solution for this thing yet? Getting the splashscreen and then "grid executable has stopped worked" error.
I've googled the net through and through, tried almost every thinkable solution out there:
* nuking various settings - fail
* checking integrity - nope
* redownloading and reinstalling - no change
* OpenAL drivers (new and bundled with grid) - fail
* Sound drivers: updated to newest available - fail
* Graphics drivers (cats 11.12) - newest to date - fail
* disabling all aoudio devices - no effect
* cracked/no-cd exe - same ♥♥♥♥
* various compatibility modes - nope
* playing around with core settings in xml files - to no avail
* manually setting core affinities - still crashes
* disabling hyperthreading in bios - 404 not found, my processor does not support it
* banging my head against the wall - did not help either
System specs:
Intel i5-2500k
Windows 7 SP1 x64
8 GB DDR3 ram
radeon hd 5770
z68 chipset motherboard
The most interesting parts are that my friend, who runs a similarly-specced machine can play grid w/o any problem (the only major difference is the graphics card, he has nvidia one). The older machine i've upgraded from (amd phenom x2 550 be, amd 770 chipset mobo, rest same) ran the game perfectly, that means i have played grid on same vga and os type.
Any solution would be great, because i really like the game...

Alright guys, hopefully this can help solve some issues. I'm running a quad core i5, windows 7 64 bit, 4 gigs ram, yadda yadda. For some reason this game does not like Windows 7. I tried everything from the audio fix, OpenAL junk, and reinstalling to no avail.
This is what finally worked for me after lots of troubleshooting. Be sure to follow these steps and order exactly:
Go into the game folder located at:
C: > Users > [name] > My Documents > Codemasters > Grid
In the Grid folder, delete the folder titled "hardware settings"
Now, go into the Steam folder for grid through:
C: > Program Files > Steam > Steam Apps > Common > Grid
Here, find the Grid.exe icon, right click, and set the game to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3.
Now close out those folders. Open up your Control Panel, or CCleaner, and uninstall OpenAL. Use CCleaner to clean the registry after uninstalling OpenAL.
Navigate to the creative website and download their latest OpenAL installer for your OS. Run this and install it.
Now, you should have a working game. I tested this by turning off compatibility mode and attempting to run the game. It of course crashed and when I turned compatibility mode back on it was still crashing... but that was only because it re saved the hardware settings. Deleted that folder, left it in compatibility mode, and BOOM no more problems for a few days now.

Tried all things writed here, but still not working.
My story:
Yesterday I tried this game. Getted 60k euro and then started first racing with Mustang. After I complete first race, there was another(amm maybe that was a season whatever...). I was going to sleep, and turnd off my game(I know that u can resume race). Next morning(today), I started a Grid, and bumt executable has stopped... Tried everything what said in this thread, and another forums. Tried to update Sound Drivers still same(remember yesterday everything was allright). Even tried System Restore back before windows update(found, that in morning was updated PC), still not work, tried system restore before first GRID opening, still not working.
Don't offer me delete hardwaresettings(after sth I make I always delete that folder)
Don't have any ideas what to do. Maybe u have one or another idea?. Everytime in codemasters site I search support, site show 500# error: There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed..

GRID was running fine for me for a few weeks. I played the hell out of it. All of a sudden, the game doesn't want to launch.

Windows 7 64 bit

Mine crashes after the GRID logo, like many are reporting. It's been like this from the beginning. I did the steps outlined by alkalinedevin, and finally got to the menu. I was happy it worked, so thank you.
But as soon as I tried to alter the graphic settings, same problem. Only now I tried alkalinedevin's steps, and that won't even seem to work for me!
Win7 64-bit
Phenom II x4

Well, it ISN'T µTorrent for me. I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 64-bit and straight away I installed Steam and GRID. The first time I launched the game, it started OK, but when I changed the graphics settings, it asked to restart the game, and again the 'GRID.exe stopped working...' message popped up upon restart. I read that Steam doesn't refund the online purchases, but what should I do then – no game and no money.

I just wanted to say that I also have been very dissappointed with the launch error, because no solution worked. I even tried to reinstall Windows 7 and install GRID first. No better. However, today I decided to try the Windows Consumer Preview. And first thing that I installed after all the drivers was GRID. And guess what – so far it works just fine. Relaunched it several times and so far no errors (knock on wood). I imagine few of you would install the new Windows beta just to launch GRID, but it helped me. It's the 64-bit version btw.

I had the same problems with Grid crashing at the splash screen.
I had recently cleared my steam drive down to clear it and reinstalled Grid and found it struggling to start. Cleared the hardware settings as suggested and set Grid as an exception in the Avast sandbox.
I then looked at what programs were running in the taskbar and shut down iplayer, Origin and BitTorrent. The game then launced with not a hitch. re-enabling the programs 1 by 1 closed down BitTorrent as the culprit stopping the launch.
Here's the strange thing for me though.
Launched Grid this morning with Bit Torrent running, and it launched fine. Can't explain it, but I would suggest that you look at all progams running in the background and shut down what is safe to close and try again.

Yeah I read that but I don't have that program running.
I also did the "run as administrator" and Windows XP SP3 at that time.
I just tried to remove the administrator and compatibilty and then delete the hardwaresettings folder. It seems to be working fine so my problem was the savegame(s). Maybe it was from a previous copy I had a year ago.

Windows 7 x32, i7-2600K, Z68, GTX 580 and Realtek integrated sound on motherboard. In my case GRID was failed again and again after first logo. Any of the ways described here, didn't help. After installation of the old Genius 4.1 PCI sound card everything instantly earned. I suspect that integrated sound system with last drivers not correctly work with a code of this game. Or vice versa :-)
P.S. The same situation occurred (with the hangs of the game at start) with DiRT was corrected at the same time after installation of old PCI sound.
P.P.S. Now I use PCI-E's X-Fi from Creative and everything works.

i had a similar issue and I sent a message and here is their reply
Thank you for submitting your recent request to Codemasters Customer Services concerning Grid.
Can you ensure that any anti-virus software on your PC is disabled. If you right click on your anti-virus icon in your system tray, you should get an option allowing you to disable it (or exit). Make sure that you do not run any other programs whilst it is disabled and re-enable it once you have finished trying this procedure.
Please also ensure that any CD tools that may install virtual drives - e.g. Nero, Clone CD, Alcohol 120, Daemon Tools are uninstalled. You should also disable any CD tools that check for disk insertion.
Any other background programs, where possible, should also be shutdown.
Now try running the game again.
Kind regards
Rob

I can confirm that closing uTorrent made Grid load without crashing.

You guys torrent while gaming, then wonder what the problem is? In Utorrent, try disabling the ports Grid uses so there won't be a conflict.
Deamon tools has always been a nuisance. UltraISO works fine.

Well, i want to report that i have solved my problem. After having a conversation with CM support i have found out a cuplrit - apparently uTorrent v3.0 and above running in the background interferes with GRID in some mysterious way. Anyway, i close down uTorrent and GRID launches just fine <3
Back to driving. Hope it helps you.
Thank you! This worked for me as well.

I played the game a little while ago and it worked beautifully. Now all of a sudden it wont even start, I've tried all of the fixes people have posted on here and none of them have worked. I'm really bummed because this was my favorite racing game :(
If anyone has any other fixes please tell!

I just ran it as administrator with compatibility mode for windows xp sp2 and it made it work (also currently have utorrent and d-tools running. I completeley forgot about that fix)

For the Intel i7:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=32085293&posted=1#post32085293
I have a i7 Quad-core, with Hyperthreading, -> 4 real cores + 4 virtual cores.
Dirt 1 and Grid see this as an 8-core cpu, but it should use the 4 core profile.
In Dirt 1 the game crashes when a race is started, in Grid the game crashes on entering the menu.
Solution:
In: Steam\steamapps\common\GRID\system\hardware_settin gs_restrictions.xml
Find the line: <restrict_if name="cores" op="int_ge" value="4">
Change the 4 into an 8 -> so the 4 core settings will be used.
I changed the 8 in the next block into an 9, just to be sure.

I had the same problem. Going to C:\Program Files (x86)\Creative\OpenAL and re-running oalinst.exe fixed it. Hope it works for you guys.
Thank you so much, this fixed it. :D Just search for "oalinst.exe", mine was on the steam folder.
