At 4:30AM a 7.1 earthquake hit my city.

Luckily (for me) it didn't hit my suburb too badly. No one I know got hurt, although everything in my father's glass factory was destroyed.

Hmrm.

7.1 is no ♥♥♥♥ing joke. I rode out a 7.2 when I was a teenager. Layed havoc all over the region. Interestingly, I was working for a family glass company as well. Thankfully they had insurance it was the weekend so nobody was hurt.

I hope your father's insurance pulls through, and that your family and relatives are safe.

Went through a 7.2 back in June so I can relate, considering the city moved about 30 inches south.

I still have some scraps from my collapsed porch.

Thanks for the support guys! :)

The initial shock was actually 7.4. Not that that makes too much difference.:p

I hope your father's insurance pulls through, and that your family and relatives are safe.

What insurance? :(

Luckily most of the panels sitting around the factory were rejects, although his Suzuki TL1000 that was sitting in the factory got totaled.

Communities have to help each other in times like this. If your up to it, find you local emergencies services and get it some co-ordinated action.

I heard there were no fatalities, however.

Yeah. Quite a testament to Christchurch's building codes and such that there were only a few serious injuries and no fatalities (reported.)

The biggest music shop in town had the facade of the building over the road fall into it. They keep all the most expensive instruments up high on the wall, out of reach of poor Irish children, so I can only imagine how much damage there'll be there.

"Earthquake" and "Glass Factory" (Heck, just Glass factory by itself) in the same post doesn't usually paint a pretty picture for the workers, so I'd expect they get some sort of medical coverage for these situations, then there is the car insurance...

Oh yeah, there is medical and everything. But cover against damage like this would be in the regions of tens of thousands of dollars, for a company that isn't quite breaking even, in a country that isn't particularly known for it's natural disasters.

The bike, however, was in the final stages of being rebuilt, and was thus uninsured. It got moved to the factory for safekeeping, ironically. :p

Mother nature is crazy. I luckily just got side swiped by hurricane Earl this week over here in North Carolina. There was a front that pushed him out to sea which not only saved us but a lot of people up and down the coast.

Best regards to you and yours.

It sounds to me like all is OK regarding human life. Buildings can be rebuilt and from the reports, they are built to withstand a good earthquake without loss of life. Unlike this:

The quake did widespread damage along the Tibetan Plateau and a reported 500 people have died as a result. (http://cnmnewsnetwork.com/17742/china-earthquake-2010-death-toll-and-update/)

Oh man, that would be the worst place to be stuck in during an earthquake.

The initial shock was actually 7.4. Not that that makes too much difference.:p

The Richter scale is logarithmic, so even a small increase in scale is a massive increase in power.

7.1 is equivalent to 45 metric megatons of TNT
7.4 is equivalent to 130 metric megatons of TNT

Agreed. Thankfully it hit at 4:30am and there was no one in. :)

Gotta admit... glass factory and earthquake = quite funny :D, the 'that is so typical' funny :P

Quite right. What's particularly funny is that the only glass left intact was sitting on a mobile trolley ready to be loaded into vans tomorrow, so with this very horizontal earthquake, it just sat there rolling about. And that's most of the 'good' glass. The stuff that hadn't been rejected due to bad measurements etc.

We went down to Bexley today to check on my parent's rental place.

Most of the way there, there was not much to be seen. Patches of different coloured tiles on roofs, little cracks in roads and footpaths.

But as soon as we turned off Anzac Drive, the first thing we saw was this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXm-RzSIGWA

The grass is all swampy, water in the gutters. Around every lamppost looked like this:
http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/967/dscf1195.jpg
where sand and water had just come pushing their way up from underground!

Also at a lot of the curb corners:
http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/2908/dscf1215j.jpg

There was a crack in the footpath with yellow water pouring out

Apparently the water was 2 feet deep pretty much straight after the quake, it went away, but it's come back to filling all the gutters just from the tide coming in. And it smells faintly of sewerage.

Heh.

My phone went flat when I was already in bed the night before the quake, and I figured I'd just charge it up the next day. Too bad the quake took the power out. My poor mother nearly had a heart attack when I didn't answer the phone in the morning.

I sent my best friend a text saying "Are you alive?" He replied with "If you could call the state I'm in living."

Honestly if cities were more pre-pared for earthquakes things like this wouldn't happen. A 7.1 is pretty strong but there are many cities prepared for them and take nearly no damage what so ever. However most countries including the USA don't think about it.. and well you see what happens. Oh well just saying.. make more earthquake resistant buildings and so forth. Japan is a good example.. not saying an earthquake can't devastate their country but for the most part a 7.1 isn't going to be a disaster.

Just a couple of things.
First, Christchurch has a lot of historical buildings, dating back to when the town was established in 1848. That's where most of the structural damage has happened. Our modern buildings are very resilient; the null death toll is a testament to that fact.
Second, the vast majority of the real damage is to the 'infrastructure;' the land has shifted up to 4 meters at the fault, and roads and rails and everything have been torn up. I can't come up with many good ways to stop the land surging up and down by meters at a time - that amount of force is probably still able to ruin anything fancy we can put in the ground.

Just saying.

Most of the city has water coming out of the taps, and it _looks_ clean, but we're boiling it for 3 minutes in case there is sewerage getting into it.

The wind came up last night, a warm dry wind so far and not overly strong at all! It will probably swing round to the south and start raining later today.

Has the army setup a camp/s for the homeless?

And what about food distribution, medical help etc... has the government been on the ball.

spacebug

I don't know what the army are doing, although they're surely helping out somehow.

There are three Civil Defence places where people are staying, and other people are staying with friends. Salvation Army are providing food to those shelters, as well as other groups. Work and Income have opened some offices for people to go if they need urgent assistance. The hospital is still open (it's got backup generators and those fancy floating foundation things). Also there have been tankers providing water in regions without (although they didn't do a great job of telling people about them.

Yeah, the government seem to be doing a pretty good job overall. I was really impressed with the speed they got the power and water back up.

Also, my floor has been shaking for the last minute :|

i've always thought of new zealand as being the perfect place to live. it has a great climate, that's not too hot or too cold, and there isn't anything venomous to bite you.

this earthquake has gone and spoilt it a little. :/

I wish I could have got a photo of it...I spotted a billboard next to the Waltham overbridge that says "Experience your city at up to 90% off". :D

I think it's a very badly timed advert that was put up before the quakes...I laughed and laughed and laughed!

Anyone else find it terribly ironic that a terrible earthquake strikes a town called Christchurch? Not to downplay the seriousness, but it is pretty ironic.

Of course, the other way of looking at it is - an earthquake of 7.1 (that's the same magnitude as the Haiti earthquake) struck next to a city of 400,000 people. Miraculously, nobody was killed. The city had the fortunate name of Christchurch ;)

What's not common knowledge is that you don't just get a half a dozen aftershocks, you get a LOT. I'd guess maybe a hundred from today's. And today's quake was itself an aftershock of the quake we had in September, of which there have been something like 5,000.

In Toronto we had a quake last summer that was 5.0 at the epicenter, which was about 4-500 km away. It was scary as hell. I can't imagine what a 7.2 is like. I know every point on the richter scale is actually a huge difference, so wow. All the best to you down there.

Just to inject a little empathy and compassion into this thread (for those lacking)...

Before you make a joke about this situation, consider how you would feel if your loved ones were crushed alive, or trapped and suffocating under fallen down buildings...

Then consider how you would feel if you saw someone making light of the situation for their own amusement...

Most of the city has water coming out of the taps, and it _looks_ clean, but we're boiling it for 3 minutes in case there is sewerage getting into it.

I thought spacebugs thrive in sewage?

I thought spacebugs thrive in sewage?

That was last earthquake. :| This one, we have no water or sewerage. Or to be more precise, there's plenty but it's not where it's meant to be. Our street had water pipes bursting all the way along it, water and sand came pouring out all day yesterday and it's a safe bet that there's sewerage in there too.

Put some pots and pans out last night to catch rain water, but it didn't rain for very long :(

Using the yard as a bathroom, to avoid putting more sewerage into the street.

Hopefully water tankers and porta-loos will be forthcoming, but there are more urgent needs in other parts of the city right now.

It's amazing the way some people react.

There's this guy who reckons he can predict earthquakes, but it seems he edits his blogs after big ones hit the news. Affectionately known as "moon man". Up until yesterday he seemed to still be predicting something on 20th March...I know this because a lot of paranoid people were following his claims after the first event. Now of course he claims he was predicting something around 19th-22nd or something. All his fans are coming and saying things like "Moon Man predicted it, you should have listened to him!" It makes me rather angry. Of course these people weren't anywhere to be seen last week saying "beware earthquakes"...
