Is there actually any way to fail on free mode, or does it just keep going on forever? Without a score, what's the point?

I utilize free mode when I want to play the game, have no desire to really accomplish anything, and just want to relax.
A sort of zen quality to it if you will. To each his/her own I suppose but for me that's all free mode is and I believe was desired to be.

I would like a mode that counts how long it would take to clear entire map. Fastest time would be first.

Free mode ends when you get 100% coverage. So there is a goal of sorts if you are looking for one.

When I got 100% on free mode it just went to the next level. By that time I had played enough didn't clear anything beyond that.

I played Free Mode to 500%, then the timer told me I'd pissed away a whole hour tessellating shapes for no actual purpose at all. I did get a quad across the whole width of the board, but I didn't seem to get the Snake achievement. Does anyone know whether that's because it doesn't count in free mode, or because you have to do it on all five levels?
I'd assumed free mode would be something like a Tetris Game A/Game B difference where you can play the endless mode to count the number of lines or points you can get, but given that Chime has no actual failure condition, the only thing to stop you is how long you can listen to the same song on repeat before going completely bonkers.
