Usually i can do everything and find the reason of the problem. But this is unusual. When i start the game it starts but nothing happens. I open Task manager and the game is working in processes tab. But not in Applications tab. Tried to launch the game in every compatibility available.
Tried installing DirectX.
I have Windows 7.

I seem to be having the same problem.

Running Windows 7 Ultima 64-Bit. The game seems to run fine at my laptop with Windows XP SP3 though.

When I click the "launch" button in Steam the mouse icon appears "busy" for a second and then the process "puzzlequest2.exe" is busy according to taskmanager. Steam even records the time that process is running (I've "played" the game for 3 hours now), but nothing more happens :(

same problem here ..
win7 64bit :(

i just bought my copy on steam after i "tryed" the game elsewhere..

i loved the game and i grab my copy.. but i cannot play on steam :(

I've noticed that the process is Active and listed in the task manager..
every time u try to launch, a new process is created...

I had the same problem on Win7 64bit Home Premium, but running dxwebsetup.exe fixed it for me.
Just installing DirectX didn't help.
dxwebsetup is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\puzzlequest2 if your save location is default.

i had the same problem on win 7 64 bit.. it was working and then later it wasn't :O happened to me lastnight and i wasted a bunch of time trying to get it to work but it didn't.. i decided to try something else this morning because i realised it was working until i changed the default sound device for windows to a usb headset :s so i changed it back to normal speakers and it works now perfectly which makes no sense :\ not sure if it's for the same reason mine wasn't working but that is how i fixed mine and i hope it helps others :)
sorry for the long post that probably doesn't make sense :D

I'm having the same issue and I use a USB headset as well. If I disable the device, the game will launch, but no sound after that, obviously.

It looks like it gets stuck in an infinite loop trying to do something with audio devices. I see it iterating over the same audio device registry keys over and over again when the USB device is enabled.

Just another "me too" post. Windows 7 64 version seems to be getting the worst of it with Puzzlequest 2.

Yeah USB headset is the problem. Updating Sound drivers didnt help.
But setting the settings to only 2 sound Channels helped.
I have Steelseries Siberia v2 Full headset.
So basically the problem is amount of sound channels.

following the points listed on the possible solution topic:

Does your PC meet the minimum required specs?
sure, sent already dxdiag to support

Do you have your graphics card's latest drivers?
i hava catalyst 10.6 ... they are not the latest

Has the directx web setup correctly updated your directx?
sure

Did Steam correctly download all of the game files?
yes

Are you using a USB headset?
no

Have you recently updated your sound drivers?
i have an asus xonar dx, and i didnt update drivers recently

Have you tried running the special release build?
not working, but i get a new log debug file
hundred of line like this:

2010-09-09-11-39-29: Sage\Platform\STEAM\Include\../../shared/source/sound/fmodwrap/error/check.ipp(38): Error:
2010-09-09-11-39-29: FMOD Error (79) - The sound created exceeds the allowable input channel count. This can be increased using the maxinputchannels parameter in System::setSoftwareFormat. : fmod_system_->init( 32, init_data.flags_, &init_data.info_, FMOD_EVENT_INIT_NORMAL )

Do you own a legitimate copy purchased through Steam?
sure.. the funny thing is that the pirated copy is working (maybe because its not the last patch). my legit steam copy is having trouble :(
(i bought the copy the day after trying it, and only because i tryed the game and loved :P)

EDIT: SOLVED
i set number of channel 2 in my sound card panel (i was using 8 channels)

I have Steelseries Siberia v2 Full headset.
So basically the problem is amount of sound channels.

This fix worked for me though I don't have the USB headset.
I have a Zalman Surround headset that I've had configured over 7 channels in the Windows Audio Control Panel.
Once I only configured 2 channels, the game worked perfectly for me !

So perhaps its more of a problem with Windows 7 audio management with channels ?
(Funny enough this "fix" solved my problems with Madballs in...Babo: Invasion as well, this game just "hung" when I tried to start a campaign)

Ok, just had the same issue with my moms comp windows 7 laptop x64. It was the sound settings.
First, make sure you have a restore point setup, if you dont use control panel to set one.

Go to control panel, sound. make sure you have only 1 sound device, if there is another with the status of ready, disable it. then click configure on the existing sound device. make sure it is set to 2 channel, then test. Set the sound quality to 16bit 14000 cd quality, then test if this works, Click apply. Enjoy!
