Obviously the 5830 is better for gaming but I wouldn't get either. It also depends on what games and what your other computer specs are.
If your going for a 5830($200-220), might as well get a GTX 460 for the same price. The 460 will slightly outperform the 5830.

If your going for the 5770($150), you should go for the 4870, because the 4870 will outperform the 5770 and only cost about $100. It just doesn't have DX11, but if your looking for DX11 support, you should go GTX 460 minimum anyways.

Yeah nice summary thats what i think too with current GPU's.

5830 (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/172?vs=171) but as said GTX 460 world be better unless you PLAN ON CFX and have no sli support!

I bought 3 months ago an HD 5830 , and i am satisfied with the performance.
But today i would go with the GTX 460 - but the 1GB version only , the 768 MB is a little to slow i think.

I wouldn't also go with an 4870 - it's right the price performance ratio is better but it produces to much heat , is to loud and needs a lot of power ..
(got it before the HD5830 - and even this card is not as noisy and needs less power)

A little price comparison (germany)

HD5830 - 160Eur - 202.94400 U.S. dollars
HD5770 - 125Eur - 158.55 U.S. dollars
GTX460 1GB - 185Eur - 234.65400 U.S. dollars

So at the end i would go with the GTX460 , it isn't as huge as the HD5830 (HD5830 is about 240 mm GTX 460 only about 200 mm) and offers more power in games.

but the HD 5770 offers also a lot of power - if your not expecting to much you can be happy with it

I have a HD 5770, I would give that card 3/5 for gaming at med-full (full settings very unlikely) settings at 1920x1080.

i went from crossfired 5770's to a 5830 cause of stutter , plays a lot smoother even metro2033 on high @1920x1080 . not the best but it has supprised me tbh how smooth game play is , i got it to tide me over till the amd 6000 series is released
