steam overlay?

Well first off I do not have the steam version, but rather I had it added as a shortcut to see if the overlay works, since I play this game like a sheltered autistic child but I'm not a fan of constantly alt-tabbing to chat it up with friends. It didn't work. Some months later, feeling lucky I tried opening it up again to see if by chance it would work and omg the steam overlay was working. A great night was had.

But that was the only time it worked for me. Does the steam version have overlay support, and for the non-steam players, does it work for you? Is there anything I have to do in particular to get it to work? It's so confusing.

I play SC4 with the Steam Overlay exclusively.
It has always worked for me, but some Browser IRC clients make the overlay crash (requiring you to restart the game to fix) though I think that's an issue with the overlay's browser itself.
