How is this anything better than any 3.00+ score flash on Newwgrounds?

It's better, and it's free (http://bit.ly/aY6N6g)

I, personally, much preferred VVVVVV over Shift.

This isn't me saying you can't have an opinion, I just found Shift to be rather... well... boring.

The music in VVVVVV is excellent, I think, and the simple game mechanic of flipping your gravity (Forgive me, I have forgotten what it's called ingame) just works with the challenges. While I know Shift has a similar mechanic, I think VVVVVV pulls it off better with the challenges it gives the player.

Thanks for the tip with Shift, funny game and very short. But I still prefer VVVVVV. :)

Well after playing shift for about half an hour, and VVVVVV for 2 hours, I gotta say, the music, design, comedy, story, graphics, and gameplay is much better in VVVVVV than Shift. Also, VVVVVV is much more challenging. Getting some of those shineys is like playing a romhack ;D

Having now played VVVVVV, Shift, and Shift 2, I can say that VVVVVV is a very different game.

VVVVVV is:

Much larger than both Shift games combined. (As you would expect for $5.) It's easy to spend 3 hours in VVVVVV, whereas Shift 1+2 have (generously) 10-15 minutes.
Focuses more on platforming than puzzle-solving, though there are definitely puzzle-solving aspects. Shift is the other way around.
Much harder, though usually not frustrating. The spots that may be frustrating aren't unfairly so and are usually optional.
More complex in structure and more varied gameplay. You'd expect this from a larger game. It has aspects of Metroidvania-style exploration, optional objectives (trinkets), a mini-game, time trials, heck, it even has an escort mission or two.
A story. Not a particularly interesting one, but it does have 6 characters with distinct personalities and gives some motivation to the player.
Excellent music. Shift's music was okay though there's not a lot of it. VVVVVV's is like Megaman.

Whether it's worth $5 is up to you, but for me it's a no brainer. Very good game.

edit: Oh, Shift was fun, though. Thanks for pointing it out.

Eek!

Just played Shift - excellent fun. I suppose really you can't begrudge somebody trying to sell a game when it's so cheap though, regardless - plus it also highlights the fact we should be thankful there are also people giving them away for free, as it's well within their rights to charge.

Shift 1-4 are great. The later ones are a little bit Metroidvania like VVVVVV in fact. I don't think they're "better" though. Shift is more about straight puzzles than tricky platforming.

To the OP: the latest Shift game, AltShift, costs $5 as well if I remember right. Just because it's made in Flash doesn't mean it's worthless.
