Just got the Mac version First time I fire it up it says I need steam beta loaded to find servers. What the heck is this? Was this even tested on the Mac?

To my knowledge, the gold source version of Day of Defeat is not compatible with Mac.

Sloth is right; the gold source version of Day of Defeat isn't compatible with Mac (yet). The gold source version of Day of Defeat that Sloth links to is based on the engine used for Half-life.

The link that you posted is for Day of Defeat:Source, this is a different game and it is Mac compatible. It's based on the Half-life 2 engine. The DoD:Source section of the forums can be found at: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=56

he just don't know there is a real DoD and a fake DoD :)
