I'd like to go through the Call of Duty 1 (the first game) campaign with a buddy. Is co-op mode possible with this game?

No. It predates the co-op craze.

I thought since it's based on the Quake 3 Team Arena engine, there was a shot at it. Oh well. I guess this means CoD 2 also doesn't have co-op, either.

Nope. Don't think there're any co-op mods for either game either to be honest.

Co-op didn't come to the COD series until World at War.
