View Full Version : Dead Rising 2 won't play

I am putting this here for I don't continue to highjack another topic.

Simple it's decrypted which following I saw the Step 1 of 3 pop-up with the last step being the install or something of GFWL. After that the pop-up goes away and the game just refuses to launch. It keeps bringing up the Step windows but shows no number and closes.

I am now checking integrity and installing the GFWL Client separately. Making this topic to keep updates on the attempts and maybe the fix if I find one.

For the record I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit.

Testing now...

Actually I will attempt that in a second. It did find three corrupted files.

EDIT: Also I respect the post. Thank you, didn't think Valve actually paid much attention to these forums.

Just posting to say that everything worked fine for me. I preloaded the game a few days ago, and started it up without issues, though it wanted me to defragment the files, since they had something like 340000% fragmentation, whatever that means. Never had to do that with a steam game before, and I've been on steam for 8 years. :)

UPDATE:

After doing the install for GFWL and the scan it works. When I launched it Steam launched the GFWL Authentication check and then it played.

Oh good! It started right up for me. I hate it when it works fine for me and no one else. I'm booting up a second machine to see if that one works. In the meantime, I suggest trying Ordain's fix if you're having trouble.

satsun

I installed the GFWL client manually and it still crashes after it verifies the game's release date.

WIN7 64bit

I have to check integrity every time after it crashes and it finds 3 files to replace.

I used the GFWL client that came with the game.

Ordain
09-27-2010, 09:50 PM
I am guessing the three same files are the culprit. Is there a database that our corrupted files found are logged in that you could perhaps look into Chris? It would make your job easier if the problem turns to be more global.

DetCord ~
Yes. I just downloaded the client, installed it and verified my game cache which found three files out of whack.

ChrisD
09-27-2010, 09:52 PM
Anything that the game modifies when it attempts to launch would get reacquired by the client, so it's probably not a corruption issue. I have a Win7 64-bit machine downloading it now. I'll follow up shortly.

DetCord
09-27-2010, 09:52 PM
So you and satsun are experiencing the same issues after installing the client? Well, this certainly sucks...

From what I noticed only Satsun is. Mine is fixed. My only sad suggestion for Satsun is the standard affair of spyware/adware/malware check - doubt it's the culprit. But this does usually fix a huge portion of problems that most people run into.

If my problem persisted I could continue to troubleshoot it but my fix worked for me and a few other people so I got nothing.

It sounds like one difference is that you downloaded the GFWL client and Satsun ran the installer that the game puts on disk. Satsun, you might try downloading GFWL. If my second computer (which I don't think has ever installed GFWL before) has the issue, I probably need to replace the installer in the game directory...

Anyway, I gotta go to bed.

Doesn't work, I get a popup that says the game stopped working. On Windows 7 x64, I tried downloading GFWL separately and using the install we got with the game. Neither solves the problem.

Well, that was a no go. Installed the GFWL client, signed on, but I'm still getting that GFWL pop-up that just hangs there.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me either. Vista x64.

I have MANY GFWL games, and this is the first time I'm having a problem. For some reason, it can't verify the game release.

It seems like game didn't install properly. Everytime I launch, it re-installs step 1 over and over again.

if you google for dead rising 2 and the above error message, you see that a long time ago the game was cracked and the crackers ran into the problem and this is what they suggest...

I did some simplistic testing, and I'll try to provide all relevant data.

First time I tried to run it, GFWL encountered an "error" and recommended I reinstall. I tried it again, and it went through, but then once the game actually started opening, it crashed. I verified integrity and found 3 bad files, then ran it again, and it crashed again. I verified integrity for the second time, and it found (and redownloaded) 3 bad files again. I then ran dawn of war 2 to check on GFWL, and it ran smoothly.
I then verified integrity of dead rising 2 again, just to make sure that the files were all still clean (they were). I then restarted steam, tried dead rising 2 again, and it crashed at the same point. One last verify integrity found 3 bad files again.

Other (potentially) relevant data:
I preloaded the game yesterday
When I initially tried to run the game, it informed me that the local files were fragmented. I ran the defragment.

If I install GFWL from the website like above, will it conflict with my installation for DoW 2?

Yeah, mine goes through a GFWL authentication to see if the games released. Then that goes away, I get the green "ingame" status for like 5 seconds, then it just stops running.
I verify, find 3 files, redownload those, relaunch, and the exact same thing happens (including losing 3 files to verify again)

I'm gonna try installing the client directly as stated. Will edit if/when successful on Win7 64.

EVER.

That out of the way, I was originally having the same problems at the OP. Like many other people in this topic, that problem was resolved when I installed Micros's ♥♥♥♥ty software separately (http://www.microsoft.com/games/en-us/live/pages/livemarketplace.aspx).

Then I had an issue with Microsoft saying my account details were wrong. And now I have a problem with my CD key being wrong.

and yet again exactly the same for me :( not working and changing the sound setting does not work on any of them. 3 corrupt files and set up box just keeps disappearing.

I am thinking though like the other chap said if ur a uk user, this game was not officially released untill 5.00 today. This wont be the first time i have downloaded a game and it says ready to play only to find out i still had to wait 6 hours before actually bein able to play it. U.s users got thier game release 6 hours or so before us. So this is probably why half of people are sayin its fine and they other half saying its not workin. 6 years i have been on here and this sounds a familiar case.
If 5.00 passes and im still unable to play it then its a major issue need sorting fast.

satsun
09-28-2010, 07:24 AM
I think the 3 corrupted files isn't the issue. I think Steam sees three files that were changed by the GFWL decryption process and then replaces them because they don't match what is stored on the Steam server, which is an encrypted file or files; I think it's just a conflict. My game runs fine but it still says there are 3 corrupt files. If I let Steam fix those files then it goes through the GFWL decryption process again.

♥♥♥♥ yes, game now running great no more crashes.

my windows audio was originally set to 24 bit to get it to run i had to change windows audio 16 bit dvd stereo.

if you google for dead rising 2 and the above error message, you see that a long time ago the game was cracked and the crackers ran into the problem and this is what they suggest...

HOLY !! SWITCHING To 16 BIT WORK BUT AS SOON YOU SWITCH TO 24 BIT IT DOESN'T ! THEY NEED TO PATCH THAT

THX YOU TO HAVE FIX IT FOR ME EVERYTHING RUN FINE I BEING ARGUING WITH STEAM GAME CACHE AND REBOOT PC FOR 30 minute !

I thought it would have been posted in here but I guess not, hope it works.

Changing the audio to 16 bit did not work for me, still crashing after the GFWL tries to check the date. Have forwarded the ports, reinstalled, redownloaded. Still nada.

Any other tips that haven't been covered yet?

Thanks!

My gf was having a problem where directx popped up but then disappear as well as the game. I told her to do the install GFWL then verify game files and that worked for the issue as well. So if you're having the directx problem do the same the OP did in this thread.

Well Did you Download the GFWL then Manuel Installation It ?? and Check Integrity of Game Cache after ? then set the Audio Quality of ur Speaker to 16 Bit DVD quality over 24 Bit ?

But I SWEAR IF THEY DON'T FIX that Within a Week the changing of BIT from 16 of 24 Im RAGE AT The Who EVER Responsible for the TECH SUPPORT / Costumer CARE so that they HEAR OUR VOICE : Hell KOTAKU should be posting stuff about it now !

but Then once you done gaming you should revert to 24 bit : 16 Bit is Just Near to be Extremely Awful in Audio quality it feel like ur playing Some Old 90's Game like Heroes of might and magic III i doubt it was 24 bit !

Newb here but how do you change your audio quality on XP?

You can do it in control panel but i guarantee it won't fix your problem. The sound thing only fixes people having crashes upon the game loading, you and myself and many other users aren;t even getting that far with jut the process appearing and not actually loading.

*This is for the game not launching issue.. Nothing to do with sounds which seems fine to me ingame.

1. Download game from Steam.
2. Launch Game from Steam.
3. GFLW pops up and "decrypts" the game. (This step causes 3 files from the download to be shown as "corrupt" if you verify the game cache on steam. Makes sense really as it has changed the files).
4. Game Fails to start. "Installing step ( of )" pops up briefly.
5. I then went to http://www.microsoft.com/games/en-us/live/pages/livemarketplace.aspx and downloaded the GFLW client and installed that (but did not run it).
6. Reattempted the game launch, it worked.

7. Signed into my GFWL account, added CD Key.. Success..

Still it was a lot of fluffing around and again the awful Games for Windows Live software which was causing the problem.(I have yet to have a game that uses that POS work well).

It appears that GFL Windows client should of been included with DR2 download on steam but wasn't. If you have a GFLW game previously installed you will not have this issue .

Try Reinstalling the game, it worked for me after all the same problems and tricks I could find here on the forums did not work.

Reinstall it, maby download GFWL first, Im not sure if that helped or not on the second try.

If your problem lies with windows Live verification simply follow these instructions..

1.) download GFWL client from the website
2.) once open sign in on your LIVE profile
3.) whilst open go to your steam folder e.g. (C:Programfiles>Steam>steamapps>Common>Dead Rising 2)
4.)Run the Dead Rising 2.exe
5.) The Windows Live verification should open
6.) Once the window Is open press , click on it and press enter
7.) The game should verify and then either Auto-Run or go on to the Steam Client and run the game.

This should work for the majority...
I didn't have to touch the sound controls or anything else.
Im running windows 7 x64.

Good luck

I cant play even if i try all the solution i read!

I have XP and nothing is work. When i start the game, GFWL ask to see if the game is up to date or something like that. When it is finish, nothing happen, Steam says im playing the game and deadrising2.exe is there but there is nothing, like most of the others here... And then, when i ask to verify the game cache, steam finds 3 files and GFLW ask to see if the game is ok again. I reinstalled the game 2 times be it is still trolling me. WHY ALL THESE SOLUTIONS WORK FOR EVERYBODY ELSE BUT ME!?!?!?!

Oh, and when i mean nothing happen, i mean nothing. If i start the game, its just like if i'd done nothing at all, no black screen for a second, no error message.

Same as THEMAVER1CK and Paradox_Qc, I am running XP sp3 and this game does absolutely nothing besides start up in the task manager and sit there eating up cpu... I bought it from the games for windows live client and am having this problem. I even uninstalled and downloaded it again and nothing, this is BS.

the solution that worked for me, for the game starting up saying its running without actually running, is to run a shortcut of the deadrising2.exe on a temporary drive (Ghost drive or flash) while that drive is labeled 'C'. Seems one source of this problem is that if you don't have a C drive, it can confuse the game and make it glitch out like a few people have explained.

I'm still having the problem of it not connecting to LIVE once the game is actually running though, it tells me I need to be connected and asks if I would like to connect, then fails to do anything once I tell it to connect. No connection errors or glitches, just nothing.
I'd like to be able to save before getting into the game.

Paradox_Qc

I'd like to be able to play...
I mean, i paied for it a im not the only one who have this problem so is GFWL or Steam gonna do a patch or they are just gonna leave us? Its been 2 days now and they dont even seem to notice our problem.

BoaDoom thanks! I plugged in a flashdrive that turned into drive C, put a deadrising2.exe shortcut on it and now it works like a charm. I was a bit of a nub when building my computer and thought setting my windows drive to F. :p

Although, this is the first time I encountered this. I still hope it gets a fix though, because this could be pretty annoying.

BoaDoom
09-29-2010, 06:51 PM
No problem, just relaying what I learned on that other thread. Once you run it from the shortcut, it will run from any other link perfectly fine, including steam... until you restart your computer, then it's f'd again.

You having any troubles connecting to LIVE? I can't tell if this is another problem I'm having, or related to this strange fix. Though its doubtful you'll read this... seeing as your probably just playing the game.

I started another thread with the fix for this, but here it is anyway

THIS FIX IS FOR WHEN THE GAME CRASHES ALLMOST INSTANTLY APON OPENING AND GIVES ACCESS "Exception: Access Violation (00A0D3A0)" ERROR.

For some reason this bug also makes steam think that 3 files did not pass validation, so when one tries to validate the game it will continualy re-download 3 files when its not necessary.

-----------------------------------------

I found this completely by random..

I too was having this crash - i can confirm it works perfectly.

----------------------------------------

the problem is you're sound settings!

for windows 7 users:

Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Manage Audio Devices

Select the Active sound device (generaly the one with the tick on it) and then click Properties.

Click the Advanced Tab

CHANGE THE DEFAULT FORMAT TO 16BIT 144100 HZ

hit apply.

Go open Dead Rising 2 - will work perfectly.

This may be a bug caused by the fact is an Xbox port, and perhaps the Xbox emulator/whatever they used to port it diddnt take into account higher sound quality on pc's?

HOLY DOUDLE!!! IT WORKS!!! FINALLY THANKS A LOT!!!
Still hope they fix it. But how do i connect now?

BoaDoom
09-29-2010, 07:15 PM
Seems the only solution to the problem of the not being able to connect is to smack your head into the wall repeatedly. You wont connect, but at least you wont be conscious for the 3rd night in a row trying to play the same game.
I haven't even seen anyone else post reporting the same problem I'm having, the "Start", "You must connect"... nothing issue. Plenty complaining about "failure to connect".

Whats worse than a game giving you an error and not working? a game not working without telling you anything.

slugboss
09-29-2010, 07:24 PM
I actually connect to Live fine.(I did buy it through the games for windows client though) Havnt tried saving or playing online yet, but I was receiving and sending messages through LIVE. I also do need to keep the drive C connected or it'll go back to launching from its inactive state even when I havn't restared the computer :(

I'm trying to get my wireless 360 controller working now, baw.

BoaDoom
09-29-2010, 07:28 PM
Well, at least I now know that its not a glitch inherent to the C drive flash fix... meaning I now have no idea what could be wrong with it, but at least I've got something else to try and fix till someone else figures it out.

I don't get it, I have the same problem but I have GFWL with both Dawn of war II and GTA IV, and DoW II is on steam connected to GFWL so it can't be that.

After redownloading the file in question and installing that version of the GFWL client... nothing changed. A fair try, though. I only hope that Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw gets his teeth into this debacle.

This is interesting - the deadrising2.exe file is actually just a link to the Windows LIVE Zero Day Piracy Protection application. Could this be causing an issue since the REAL application launcher DOES NOT EXIST!?

So, I've repaired my own problem.

For whatever reason, my copy of DR2 was attempting to start in windowed mode after verification. I solved this by removing my temporary monitor solution (my 82'' monitor won't be in until Tuesday and I have a normal one hooked up through the surround system at the moment) and went straight DVI-to-DVI.

I'm not sure WHY this has fixed it, but for all intents and purposes, it has. I'll research this further and update you as I figure things out.

Current resolution - 720p
