Will this register on Steam?
I've never ordered from Direct2Drive so I don't know if you're given a "CD key" or not.

I just bought it in D2D right now and the activation code they gave me wasn't recognized in Steam, probably because D2D doesn't give you a "retail CD code" as mentioned in that link jp_rsardeto posted. Maybe there's another code I get once it's installed. I'll let you know.

Downloaded the D2D version and installed. The single player game works fine but I couldn't connect to multiplayer games. I checked the settings and saw a product key, but the servers say it's invalid. I wrote the product key down and typed it into Steam but it didn't recognize it.
Looks like you can only add the retail disc version to Steam. I hope I can play multiplayer too, assuming anyone still does.

Ok, thanks for telling me. :)

I got caught out with this lack of information on Stem's part. It may have only cost me £2.50 but it's the principle of the matter. On the Steam article it clearly states that Prey CD-Keys are accepted. Other gamnes in the article are mentioned in more detail such as R.U.S.E. which states:
R.U.S.E. CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
Note: R.U.S.E. keys from Ubisoft's Digital River service are not accepted on Steam
Now if only they had a similar warning for Prey! I can't even get hold of the disc version and it isn't on Steam either so D2D seemed to be the only option available but I don't care too much for D2D and that's why I wanted to activate on Steam and if I hadn't read the article I wouldn't have even bought the game. That's my argument

I looked into this too when I saw that Prey was one sale on D2D. However, if you look at the Defense Grid statement in the CD Key section of support, it says, "only D2D keys accepted." Or something along those lines. So, if it doesn't say D2D on Prey, then that means that the D2D keys do not work.

First, it's reasonable to assume that if you didn't buy a CD then you don't have a CD key.
Second, there's no achievements or cloud saves or really any benefit to having the game in Steam. Unless I'm overlooking something? I'm happily playing my D2D version with no issues so far.

There is a key you get for D3D's Prey, but it's missing the last 2 digits, which the CD version has. D2D doesn't give you the whole key, but most of it. Shame, really.
The only benefit for Steam is to know when your friends are playing it so you can load it up and kick their butts.
