From my keyboard the "z" button start and shuts off engine.
But if u want to look at the in-built fps check u have to press shift+Z, and then the engine shuts down. IM on the SE keyboard so thats the reason i guess. I cant edit the keys so thats why i wonder if others can. :)

I've never used the built in fps counter. Instead I run FRAPS, which gives not only the fps, but lets you capture screen shots. The free version of FRAPS gives you the basic functions, for $10USD the full version lets you make movies as well.

In game you can view the frame rate counter and take numerous screenshots.
I use Xfire to do all that FRAPS can. Time, date, screenshots, video and a frame rate counter

Your keyboard should recognise if you press just Z or shift+Z. I mean you can use capitalized letters here, so it works correct as it should in RW ;)

I don't always believe the inbuilt frame counter. Mine never goes below 14, but there are times when I can see its only 1 or 2 frames per second as a new tile is loading or something!

Sometimes I wonder how a 64MB AGP card can handle this...

If you're running with 14fps I wonder how you endure this. The least I want an app to run on are 20fps and that is just the border between running ok and few noticeable stutters. Movies usually have 24(US)/25(most rest of the world) fps because upwards from there the eyes see flowing movements without interruptions. (numbers from TV standards NTSC and PAL/SECAM)
On some routes or in certain areas the ingame fps counter just goes crazy on my machine changing in milliseconds and I can't read the numbers, but usually I drive on about 40-60fps which is just fine. Funnyly it got more by choosing a higher resolution with same (max) detail level.

yes, but for my sake i just want to see the in-game fps when the train comes to larger cities. And it goes to 14 and above, not in oxford-paddington that runs very well. More like the american desert scenarios that runs under 20. Anyway ! in some scenarios that if the uphill goes over 1.5 its hard to start/pull the train forward if it had stop completley, thats what the "z" key comes in.
sorry for my english here but guess the answer is to look over the run .
btw cheers

Try holding Shift down until after you tap and release Z. Works for me.

Same. And try to remember to do it before you start the scenario if you want it on... Saves discovering the reason you're slowing down is lack of engine rather than a gradient change.
