Are you expecting a pre built, or will you build it yourself?

do you have a case or anything you could reuse?

cuz OS's cost 150 dollars by themselves..not a lot of money for the actual specs. You could build a linux distro machine i guess..

Is that game really all that matters? If so, using a lesser PSU and integrated video would make that budget possible, since I assume today's integrated video can play that game fine (maybe not at 1920x1200 with maximum settings, maximum AA, and those framerates, but I'm hoping with the frame rate you want, you're going to be using a CRT that can do 120Hz at the resolution you're using and therefore won't be a huge resolution).

I actually recently toyed with a $300 build for my nephew, but the case/PSU combination has been deactivated (out of stock, may or may not return). Here it is. It's an AMD dual core build with 2GB RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and a Radeon 4250 IGP. Research how well that does at Counter Strike 1.6, I assume it'll play that game perfectly quickly, but at what resolution/settings/FPS rate combination I don't know. It's said to be around the speed of a GeForce 9400, maybe slightly faster, which is no speed demon today, but should hopefully handle that older game just fine.

That'll comfortably run Windows XP or even Windows 7 and Counter Strike 1.6, plus be a good around basic PC, but won't do any heavy lifting. Hint, take advantage of the case/PSU combo being inactive and get a separate decent PSU and a case of choice. It'll be more expensive, but this way, you spend ~$300 now, and have room for a mid-range GPU later plus more RAM.

Case/PSU: (can't recall exact price, think it was ~$50)

(P.S. RAM is one stick, and therefore not dual channel, but this leaves room for another 2GB module later, whereas if you get 2x1GB now for the advantage of dual channel, you'll have to throw it all away and get two new 2GB sticks to get 4GB total later on, so I recommend just one module right now even though it'll be single channel [doesn't hurt general performance much, but IGPs do like dual channel and DDR3s bandwidth])

That's ~$241 without the PSU and case. Like I said, get a decent PSU and case of choice, or if you get a combo, make sure the PSU is okay (Enermax PSUs usually are (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100006519%2050001400%2040000007%20600029807&IsNodeId=1&name=Yes)) and spend just over $300 to do so. It'll cost slightly more, especially with shipping (or find a case with free shipping since case shipping is killer, and most of the parts I chose have free shipping), and you'll be good to go now, and have some room down the line.

Btw fps 101 is the best fps you can want in cs 1.6 ;) You run fastest with fps 101. 120 is as slow as with an fps of 81. (atleast iirc)

You need a monitor capable of that... 60Hz won't cut it... CRT or 120Hz monitor will though, so it's kinda pointless for 120FPS on a 60Hz monitor...

Total: $294 ($264 after mail in rebates)Hmm, good build for the same price plus a GPU. I never really took advantage of combos plus I put my list together a month or two back. How quicly things change and you can get a better PC for the same price. However, I'm not too keen on open box products myself (nor MIRS), but I guess it works for the price.

Edit: Mine is only better in some ways, but they're small (more hard drive space, more up to date motherboard/chipset), and his is better in one big way, a GPU. Many parts are even the same (DVD burner and CPU). Overall, you'd get similar results in general as the core build is roughly the same, but his the advantage of a GPU as I mentioned, which will help in games, so I'd go with his. It'll probably even let you do a little beyond Counter Strike.

if i order this stuff and assemble it and install an os...i mean wat about screws and stuff?? lol

You get screws with the motherboard usually (and PSU), but as that is an open box motherboard, you may or may not. Open box is sometimes only the bare motherboard. Also, motherboards usually come with the SATA cables, but again, this may lack it being open box. Ditto for the backplate I/O panel. You take that risk getting open box stuff.

Also, optional but recommended, grab case fan(s). Sadly, that case has a 80mm fan (standard these days is 120mm). 80mm fans push less air and/or are louder. It includes said fan, so you may just need on intake fan. Not sure if it has to be 80mm or 120mm. Just be prepared for some possible noise with that 80mm fan.

These are two of the "smaller" downsides of his build. To get a GPU with a less than $300 build though, you'll have to cut corners.

Otherwise, if you have the OS, monitor, and peripherals (keyboard, mouse, speakers), yes, that's all that's required.

case should come with all the screws you need (standoffs for the motherboard so it is not touching your case etc.)
H3llian is right about the SATA cables and plate, scratch the motherboard then, i'm a risk taker and usually go for open box stuff haha, but better safe then sorry, thinking about motherboard that would be right for you...

scratch that one, won't work with the processor, I was thinking about this foxconn motherboard (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186200) if you really can't go over budget

and no intergrated graphics wont do anything since you will use the 4650, it should turn itself off or you can turn it off if it doesn't do it automatically. It's basically there for people who don't use a graphics card to be able to attach it to their monitor

foxconn say it doesn't support it on the motherboards page on their website (http://www.foxconnchannel.com/product/Motherboards/detail_spec.aspx?ID=en-us0000489)

funnily enough i've heard of people running athlon 2's on it, technically it should work but i'd personally go with the other one since if anything goes wrong newegg/foxconn can't just tell you that it's your fault since they're not listed as compatible.

rebates depend on the company, usually you cut out the UPC code and send it in with a copy of your receipt in the mail within a certain amount of days after purchase, what they give you depends on the company it's usually a prepaid credit card, but some take quite a long time before you get them.
click on the "$ mail in rebate card" next to the item cost in your cart for more info.

in my opinion you're all set
