Trade Routes

I need to used trade ships to transport spice from my southern colony to my main northern colony for extra food. I have trade ships and they are on a trade route but I must not be doing something right because once they go on their route and reach the destination, they neither pick up nor drop off the goods I've selected. Any help>?

Do you have it setup to pickup spice on the southern island and drop off on the norhtern island. Click on the ship or trade route and make sure that you don't have it backwards.

When you examine your trade route, make sure that you've used the "+" menu to load things onto your ship at the place where you are making it, and the "-" menu to unload the stuff at the destination end.
