View Full Version : SH4 + Expansion Frustrations

Having been a big fan of SH3 I decided to grab SH4 and the expansion off steam.

Installed the expansion which also wants to install the original too, okay fair enough. Installation complete, run the expansion. Oh, it wants to update, and downloads 80mb of files. Wait for that then launch it. Nothing happens. Hmmmm...

Okay, try to launch the original, that wants to update itself, okay, 100mb or so of files downloaded... Launch it. Works, wahey! oh, it's version 1.3... hmmm.. thought the latest was 1.4? Quit the game, check it is automatically updating, yes it is. Verify cache, oh, 120mb of files need to be downloaded again...

This repeats for a bit, every time I launch one the other wants to update afterwards. Have so far managed to play the game for 1 hour without expansion. So, I try to verify the cache files. Again, the expansion wants to download 80mb of files to replace the 400 or so that didn't verify.

Read on a few forums about a few installation issues... Apparently with the steam version you only need to install the expansion... Erm... okay, try to uninstall the original. "Computer says no", will also remove the expansion to as it needs the original. Also remembered I tried to only install the expansion in the first place and "Computer says no" that time too... hmmm...

Next try, delete both sets after backing up each set separately. Then restore only the expansion... Hmmm... now needs to download 1.5Gb of extra files... sigh...

At some point I assume I will actually get this to work, but really this is silly. In fairness, I've only ever had one other major problem with a game bought through steam and I can't even remember what it was... Otherwise it has been reliable and straightforward for me... Looking at the installation folder everything is in the same folder, there is no separate folder for the original and the expansion, which is how it should be. Why on earth is the original trying to downgrade each time I run it? You never actually need to run the original once you have the expansion installed as you can still access the original content... Surely the Steam installation should recognise this?

Anyone have any suggestions or pointers to known work-arounds?

Just as an update to my original post.

Have now been able to play for two long sessions as a German submariner, so looks like I managed to get it going. Hopefully, this will continue to be the case.

For the record, I backed up both installations (original and expansion). Restored the Expansion only, set it to auto update, and once completed - it needed to download about 500mb of replacement files - I turned off automatic updating on both entries for the original game and the expansion. I only run the shortcut for the expansion and so far it has been working okay. AFAIK there are no further updates for this game beyond version 1.5 available anyway, so there should never be anything to update.

I hope this helps someone who might end up with the same problem.

Bucket of crap.

Game downloaded files from Steam and now it refuses to continue saved games.
Kinda odd; I had SH4 installed from disk and it worked just fine, now the Steam version is just a pile of ♥♥♥♥.
