This is a list of questions users have come to this topic to ask. As I get them I will update this first post so it removes lots of reading for newer people.
The format is as follows:
Orange= answered
White= needs answers.
1. Were are the settings for servers saved
(were are they for that fact. The gui is missing them)
*Server settings are stored in the ...Cstike\cfg\server.cfg
2. I noticed a adminpanel thing. Any how to' on how to use it?
3. A list of server variables.
*"You can see all the valid cvars by typing 'cvarlist' in console without the quotes. "
*"You can set your configuration up by using the game.cfg file in the cstrike/cfg folder."
4. Why is the game type cstrike and not something different? Kinda wierd if you ask me.. Shouldnt game type be different? (cstrikesource)?
*Different Server Exe. Uses Sources Dedicated Server.
6. Detailed tutorials on how to set this mug up would be greatly appreciated. I will be willing to host a single page html if somone is willing to make one. Email it to mail@teamxw.com
STILL WAITING.
7) Has something changed with kick/ban? I'm having problems kicking by number, name, or steam id #
8) Mapcycle doesn't seem to be running correctly? Does the file need to be moved into the cfg folder? I added a 'mapcyclefile' command to the server.cfg
Answers to this:
Mapcycle is dependant on the mp_timelimit variable. A 'round' is required to start before timelimit goes into effect (idle servers don't cycle). FYI: Only use ';' to uncomment maps in the mapcycle.txt
More Details:
http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=152849&perpage=15&pagenumber=1
9) When and how should autoexe be used with the new server?
No need. Server.cfg is auto executed. Autoexec is for clients.
If you want a outside config to be executed just put it in the server.cfg
10) When can we expect to see VAC enabled servers?
11) How do you create/import banned users list?
Banning users: Create file in cstrike/cfg /banned_user.cfg. You can import banned names from say CS1.6 banned.cfg. Just cut and paste/save. You may have to import the file first from the Ban window. Tried the banid CMD but does not work from console.
In valve.rc insert line: exec banned_user.cfg
*Note: Ban files have a size limit. If you have to ban them all, use seperate ban files and exec them in your server.cfg
12) log_addaddress doesn't work
For the new css ded server the command doesn't work
It won't let me specify a port number.
FIX: log_addaddress "10.1.1.1:27500"
needs to be in quotes
13) Enabling console.
make a shortcut to the source dedicated exe and put the following in the shortcut line:
-console
Other frequently used commands:
-port
+ip
+maxplayers
+map
-autoupdate
Ex:
C:\YourServer\SourceServer\srcds.exe -console -game cstrike -secure -port 27015 +ip 67.19.87.179 +maxplayers 28 +map de_aztec -autoupdate
13) How do I get logs?
They changed the command from log on to log 1
So remember. log 1 in your server.cfg
K, Steam, or most likely, guys that already had a server. Its your time to shine.

Glad to know I have positive support already. Anyone checked the support center? The things layout scares me.
Hopefully we can get a sticky with a answer? :)
Like I said, anybody with source beta server experience might know how this thing works.
If you want to write a tutorial, I can convert it to html and host it for us. :)

Because the dedicated server files for HL1 and Source games have to be in different directories? Still seems like a confusing choice :(

Teh-KrAzE, It appears when looking through the folders (platform/admin)that there is admin window. So I think we just have to wait till they release it. Ahg

For a reply to previous:
1) Server settings are stored in the ...Cstike\cfg\server.cfg
3)http://quake2.telestream.com/css_cvarlist_complete.txt
As far as basic setup goes: install dedicated, run update, configure cfgs, create launch shortcut. Use serverdoc/firedaemon as necessary.
Right on. Thats what I am looking for. Thanks!

New Question:
10) When can we expect to see VAC enabled servers?
Explanation- I hit the checkbox for the secure server in the GUI console, but server doesn't show as secure. Also, a filter from the game client for secure servers shows there are none available.

comon guys. This is an informative topic not a bash each other topic. Its review for anyone not part of the beta ( I waited till it was released hopeing bugs would be ironed out)
So if theres any mods out there, please removed the useless threads. Keep it strictly informative for helping purposes.
Im trying to help myself as well as others. Try and do the same ;)
Not bashing anyone btw. Just wanted to state it. Avoiding a post becoming off topic.

Some guy came into my server threw a nade and lagged everyone out... wow... something must have been majorly overlooked. Sofar im really dissapointed in this release. Im willing to help work everyone through this. Im impressed with the gameplay even if the weapons arent the same (THANK GOD THE PARA ACTS LIKE ONE!!)
We need a steam rep to read this and atleast show they know we exist and are willing to help the masses ;)
I want to turn this into a place to get general questions asked instead of one post per small problem lets fix them all here
after there all compiled and answered I can convert it into a tutorial :)

hey good job teh kraze and everyone else. i've been looking for this information for a while now. You guys seem to know a lot more than me. my friend is letting me admin on his server and I've managed to enter commands and get them to work
one weird thing I've noticed though--if i enter a command like rcon mp_friendlyfire 1 it won't always work on the first try. does anyone know why? or if I'm doing something wrong?

if you just exec banned_user.cfg you don't need to manually re-import them.

just to let you know I was able to move all my banned users over .. like the previous post listed.. I opened my cs1.6 banned.cfg copy and pasted into banned_user.cfg in the cfg dir of cstrike .. started up server.. type writeid in the console.. it automatically reformated the bans to css .. then I added exec banned_user.cfg to my server.cfg in the cfg dir. .. works like a champ.

Teh-KrAzE: By editing the banned_user.cfg you can also add bans till the fix comes out. 11) How do you import banned users? Fix was not really intended to import (that was just an example of one use). Just FYI

Teh-KrAzE you might want to include this also: http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=153207
Thank you for setting up this thread.
I'm scratching my head at what appears to be some cool Admin stuff, that I assume can be accessed by rcon, to make it easier to kick or ban, but I have no idea how to access it.
Anyone figured that one out yet??
Also you can rcon banid by the player number that still works from the BETA.

When I try to exec banned_user.cfg i get this:
Cbuf_AddText: buffer overflow
Its a 21kb big file with bans from my other servers.
EDIT: Somehow this file is to big. I shortened it down a bit, and now it works, but I cant have all my bans "online".
EDIT2: Divided the bans on 4 diffrent files, then it works :)

added logging (thx needed that one) and oversize ban file warning :)
"..Ban files have a size limit. If you have to ban them all, use seperate ban files and exec them in your server.cfg.."
What is the file size not to exceed ???

Along the line of turning on the log files. Anyone notice that Rcon command are not being logged in the log files. I tried to set log_level 1 or log_level 15. Without adminmod/amxmod our lower level admins are unable to admin the server, so we gave a few of them rcon and we need to track them now. If anyone knows if we can get the logs to show rcon commands please let me know.

Updated The thread.
No real biggy. Only takes me a couple seconds to update my post. Thanks in reality to all the guys finding the answers for me :)
Hopefully we can get most of these questions worked out and I can get a tutorial written.
Anyone messed with server rates and such for better overall stability? Im hosting a 28 slot server just to see how things run and bandwidth.
I would also like to know if any voice codecs are supported yet. Cause the default voice quality is horrible!
SuicideDog
10-11-2004, 09:02 AM
I know you can set the voice codec to speex using the same method you did in 1.6 .. the quality command no longer exists in cs:s .. so it still sounds like crap..
on a side note.. on the client side for some reason I have to go in an re-setup my voice stuff everytime .. and so does just about everyone else. .. Sux

Counter-Strike Source Dedicated Server Setup Guide
First you will need to download and install the hldsupdatetool and install it into an empty folder (ex. c:\Source).
Open up a command window ('Run'...'cmd') and navigate to the folder where you put the update tool. To make sure your version is current run 'hldsupdatetool.exe -?'
Create an account if you do not already have one (consult readme in your install folder). Once you have an account run the update which will download all files with the latest available versions. For CSS this would follow the format of: "hldsupdatetool.exe -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir c:\Source -username username -password password
I would recommend making a bat file with this information because you will be running this tool often. (It should remember in the future but why take the chance)
Once it has completed go into your Source directory and go into the cstrike folder (c:\Source\cstrike). Inside here you will see your mapcycle.txt and motd.txt files. Edit these as necessary then navigate into the cfg folder. From here you will edit your server.cfg to set your main server options.(Sample server.cfg below)
Ok, you know have CSS installed and configured. Now you just need to launch it. To do this right-click on your 'srcds' file in the main c:\Source directory and select 'Send to...Desktop'
Now right-click the shortcut it created and go to 'Properties' and create the launch line. For example mine reads: C:\Source\srcds.exe -console -game cstrike +maxplayers 20 +map de_dust
You can also add additional variable to the launch shortcut such as +port and +ip if you are running multiple servers.
That is all there is to it
-Dash
I also have an HTML version so if you would like or need sshots let me know.
