View Full Version : Config Tool has stopped working and so Grotesque doesn't run. Fix?

It's pretty simple: I installed the Grotesque, ran it, a window popped up saying essientially, 'Config tools has stopped working' and blah blah blah windows is looking for a solution. I uninstalled Grotesque and reinstalled it a couple of times, but it still gets the same problem. I found some updates on the internet, but I'm sure there might be a conflict as they were designed for the non-steam versions. Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Howdie,

you need .net Framework.

here is a version:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5

Only the config tool need framework, so you can run the game in the start menu with the : "Grotesque-Tactics (no ConfigTool)" button.

EDIT NEW

Someone find a solution for this "Config tool has stopped working" bug. And its really silly! :D

The reason is a missing font for the config tool. Some PCs didn't install this font.
You have to install tahoma.tff
http://www.fontonic.com/download.asp?id=6009

We will fix this in the upcoming patch.

What doesn't Razer77? The game or the download Poet linked? I ask, because I can confirm Poet's .net Framework thing won't even install on my system (it is a 64 bit), but if you mean to say the game just doesn't work on 64 bit systems then I guess I'm pretty screwed. Also, thanks Poet for trying, your solution might still work, but I may be doing it wrong.

For me, on windows 7 x86-64, trying to launch the demo gives this error. There is no (no ConfigTool) menu option. (obviously there's no demo on steam, but I won't buy the game if the demo won't even work).

64 Bit system works, we developers work with that. :D
The problem is a missing or not correct version of dot framework -> Microsoft has lots of SP versions for that. Dot Framework 3.5 SP 1 bla bla...

here is the 64 bit version:

That helped?

However, you can start Grotesque Tactics with the Noconfig Tool startmenu entry.
The demo is older, but you can start Grotesque Tactics with a bat file. Look here in our support forum:

Hey, the link with the noconfigtool bat file in your second link works and for that I'm very grateful, but I apologize, when it starts up the game is in German. I don't know how to change it to English, which I can speak. I get that the change is in Optionen, but that's about it. From there, could you tell me what to do, just what things to press in German to get it to go to English? Sorry for all the trouble, thanks man.

The language is changed in the launcher, as is a lot of the graphic detail and resolution settings. So actually getting the launcher working is probably the better way to proceed. Did the 64 bit .net runtime not help you? The launcher runs fine on my Windows 7 x64 but I do have all the .net runtimes installed already.

From what I've seen in other games (with directx and vc runtimes) steam has the ability to check for and install runtimes prior to the games first launch. It might be an idea for the developers/publisher to do so with .net :)

Ah, you can't install it cause it's meant to be built into Windows 7. Go to control panel, programs and features, turn windows features on or off and tick ms .net framework 3.5.1

I can see why people struggle with this. .net framework versioning is really confusing. I've changed this post 4 times. And I'm a programmer!

I have the same problem on my Win7 x64.
Neither reinstalling .net nor reenabling .net component in control panel helped me.
The only way I can play now is launching it manually with "GrotesqueTactics.exe noconfigtool".

I solved issue with default German language by editing "C:\Users\Your name\Documents\Grotesque-Tactics\Settings\Config.xml".
Instead of
<Language LanguageName="German" />
I put
<Language LanguageName="English" />
A few lines above there is screen resoulution setting, which I also changed to more comforting 1680x1050.

And I must say that after hearing a few minutes of Germain voicing I really miss it in English version.

Users can't install the .net 2 through 3.5 runtimes into Windows 7 because it's built into Windows 7. I don't know what you do if the built in version is broken and disabling it then re-enabling it in control_panel -> programs/features -> windows_features doesn't work. Only other suggestion I've seen is to do a repair install of Windows 7.

Users can install version 4 from optional updates in windows update but I don't think that's backwards compatible to 2 the same way 3.5 is? Not sure.

A complete set of the latest versions of the .net runtimes is 1.1, 3.5 and 4.0
1.1 includes 1.0 and does not come with, but can be installed in Windows 7
3.5 includes 3.0 and 2.0 and is built into, and therefore none of these versions can be installed in Windows 7
4.0 is newer than Windows 7 and therefore doesn't come with it and can be installed into it

can you please post your current dxdiag ? seems like a graphic card or driver bug to me. perhaps you could try to reduce the shadow settings or disable shadows completely in your config.xml
you can also try in the config.xml
MyDocuments/Grotesque-Tactics/Settings Folder
Fullscreen" to "False" to check if you have a problem with the graphic resolution. default is 1024 x 768 you can change this.

Seems you are using an intel adapter on a laptop which is probably not fully shader 2.0 compliant.
Perhaps the next patch can help, but I can't promise.
You can also try to disable postprocessing in the config tool.

I think its the audio decoder problem. Pls install the FFDShow Audio Decoder. You need this for "Direct Show".

Hello, there. I know I'm a bit slow on the draw but I have this same problem.

1. I tried installing Tahoma. It says I already have it installed. However, when I went to BaseData and clicked "fonts", it wasn't there. When I tried pasting the file there, the game still wouldn't work.

2. I tried .NET 2.0 and it is incompatible with my current .NET program. Microsoft suggested uninstalling that one and reinstalling the .NET 2.0, but I have like, some newer version of it...? I'm on XP but I tried the 64 bit version anyone, and that one automatically failed. Worth a shot.

3. There is no "no Config Tool" option I saw. I downloaded through Steam.

4. I tried this last link, but it wanted me to do a bunch of stuff I don't know anything about, and I thought to myself, what does this have to do with an error in Config Tool? So I didn't install it.

I'm on Windows XP and I got the game off of Steam.

Help?

Poet I have done all that you have said and I can get into the game by loading without the Config Tool. The only problem is that it is in German and I have no clue how to change it. Any idea?

EDIT

Nevermind, I got it to work by going into the files manually and changing the language in there. As for the Config Tool I can't get it to work. For now I'm running the game with -noconfigtool.

I'm on Windows 7 with an nVidia NVS 320M, the equivalent of an 8700M GT, and I can't get GT to work even with the fixes in this thread.

- If I start it normally, ConfigTool stops working.
- If I do "noconfigtool" and then launch, I hear a lightning strike sound, which I'm guessing is the intro screen. But I don't see anything; there is no application window, even though Steam says I'm in game.
- And then after the sound plays, it just dies.

Please help? I've tried all the fixes in this thread and none are working. I've even repaired my .NET framework.

If you cant see the intro vid, pls check this thread.
http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showthread.php?t=897040

Or edit the config.xml

On Windows 7 / Vista go to
C:\Users\Username\Documents\Grotesque-Tactics\Settings

Windows XP go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\YourPCName\My Documents\Grotesque-Tactics\Settings

edit the config.xml
line 507
DisableIntroVideos="false" change it to DisableIntroVideos="true"

ManaTree
01-03-2011, 08:52 PM
I tried both installing ffdshow and disabling intro vids; neither of them fixed the problem. The game won't show the application still. With ffdshow, it's just the same thing as before. With disabling intro vids, well, Steam acts like I'm in the game for a little while and then it just dies. No window, no sound, nothing.

a27wolf
01-03-2011, 10:43 PM
Well, I just typed "-noconfigtool" in launch options. Gets rid of the config tool error. It plays the Headup logo video or something, then dies afterwards. I'm guessing the headup video isn't the intro video, as I tried disabling it in the config.xml. The FFDshow certainly improved the crackling sound in the headup logo video, but nothing much else. I already have the current dotnet framework so I don't think that's a problem either.

It'd really suck if I can't get this game to run.

Download the rar, it start the game directly.
@ Myzery Clown I think you seek in the false directory.
But chk the directory how it described, you can also edit the language there.
Edit the resolution you prefer or take a low resolution first.
