Here's an Tutorial on how to create your own custom Mutations.
Information About The Mod:
I've added two new lists on the main-menu, one which lists custom Mutations in category's, and the other with the ZSL events. There's 11 Mutation category's to choose from. To install the mod, either extract the VPK's from the ZIP folder, to your Add-ons folder. Or just launch the EXE and select where L4D2 is installed.
Information About Mutations:
All custom Mutations have to be played on a local server, unless you have a group server that has the addon installed. All official and community Mutations released by Valve can be played on any server.

The only problem is with Scavenge Co-Op where you play as both teams, and the game doesn't end. You'll have to press Esc and go back to the main-menu.

Great job unlocking these, there is demand for all of these obviously.
Valve - how about unlocking them all for us and making it an even more robust game? Yes, it might split up the player base even more....

So If I hosted local server and someone else with the vpk addon searched for a game, mine would come up?

Yes local servers should work that way. I couldn't test it with someone else, but that's how it should be. I did test to make sure the modes were playable.

If this is just like the first mod that did this, back when mutations were new, then local servers doesn't work this way, sadly..

Pretty nifty. Am playing it as I speak but I can verify the special delivery has commons. The first map you start on you get none but as you go to the next map they spawn in. We just did parish 1, no common then on 2 we got some, then Steam went down. When Steam came back up we started again on parish 2 and this time no common, so somethin is allowing them to spawn after the initial map.

Did you enable it under extra -> addons? Also copy and paste the .vpk into the addons folder.

It's actually only just occured to me that this is the same person who unlocked the hidden survival maps and did the Survivor Swap mod.

nice work :) and i made Classic Campaign mutation but in 10 mins :D sky changes too :) i needed just to make a little search in google and found it :P used also l4d 1 skybox materials :D

Cool. and the only reason it took me 15 mins was because I got confused as too why the charger didnt spawn until near the end of the map... lol

If it goes to a lobby then just make a local lobby and start it, no one will be able to join anyways.

I just quickly played through all of the custom campaign mutations. I haven't encountered any issues with any of them.
They all seem to function as intended. Madness in particular was really hard but a crazy amount of fun!

Yes I made Survivor Swap, Hidden Maps Unlocked etc.
Also I'm glad everyone is enjoying my mod.
One simple question :) why you havent removed sv_cheats 1 and sv_cheats 0 from Madness ? it brakes the gamemode and achievements -.-
Edit : also i think its funny because normal people have made together more than 40 custom mutations :D
I'll see if the game mode suffers any reduced performance when I turn it off.

Great work Rayman!
Something I recall seeing before was a custom mutation called Versus Single player. It basically meant that you could play an entire campaign as Infected, using the right mouse button to change SI.
Was great for practicing as Infected, maybe something to add in the future.

Thanks. That Mutation was Versus CO-OP from Thegreenthing16. I can't add it since Valve changed the command from sb_all_bot_team 1, to sb_all_bot_game 1. I can't get the Survivor bots to move now. Anyone know of another command that makes the Survivors move?

I've also noticed for Special Delivery after the first map the game reverts back to normal for me, lost of CI again and normal SI spawn rates. First map works great, loved it.

I tested it and I'm having the same issue. Before I uploaded the mod it had worked fine, I know because I played No Mercy all the way through. Glade you love it, hopefully I can solve this issue.

Oh hadn't noticed that. I never died though I came close because the bots left me smoked for like 5 minutes before bunting me.

There might not be a Versus CO-OP after all. I tried using +allow_all_bot_survivor_team 1, but it isn't working for me. If anyone knows how to get it working please let me know.

Did you put the +allow_all_bot_survivor_team 1 in the launch properties of L4D2 (game library --> right-click L4D2 --> "Properties" --> "Set launch options..." --> +allow_all_bot_survivor_team 1)? If you have more than one launch options you'd like to use, use a comma to separate them (example: +allow_all_bot_survivor_team 1, -novid).

Did you put the +allow_all_bot_survivor_team 1 in the launch properties of L4D2 (game library --> right-click L4D2 --> "Properties" --> "Set launch options..." --> +allow_all_bot_survivor_team 1)? If you have more than one launch options you'd like to use, use a comma to separate them (example: +allow_all_bot_survivor_team 1, -novid).

With the sacrifice, it's now sb_all_bot_game
Also, this is a really nice addon, but I have a few complaints.
"Play with friends" vs "Play online" - I think only Play Online should actually be there since you can change it in the lobby/while creating it anyway. This would also free up space in the menu since you'd be able to remove one of the menus without losing functionality
Secondly, the menu looks quite bad with mutations plastered over it. I think you should disable the Mutation option in the menu (You technically have 2 copies each week with this) and change some images, such as Survival with a red background for survival mutations, same with scavenge, default mutation icon for campaign mutations and perhaps the default icon but with 2 of them, one behind/next to another, for versus mutations?
Equally, names need to fit, I suggest these:
Coop Mut
Vs Mut
Surv Mut
Scav Mut
Mut standing for mutation, could be replaced by Mute or Mutate
Not that it's your job, I also think the menu could be rearranged a bit for consistancy
Singleplayer (should be moved from the end, but feel free to disagree)
Campaign
Realism
Coop Mutations (Mutations should be after realism as they are with versus)
Versus
Realism Versus
Versus Mutations
Survival
Survival Mutations
Scavenge
Scavenge Mutations
That's just my 2 cents.

Uncheck and recheck the addon in the menu, although it's already checked it won't take effect until it's "refreshed".

Will Versus CO-OP allow you to start without having to have any friends join the lobby? So it can basically be Single Player Versus also?

Yes you can start without any friends in the lobby. I've added the Infected as a playable character for CO-OP, now before you say, "No that will mess up games online when you're playing Campaign and there's playable Infected." You can't play as the Infected except in the modes that allow it. Meaning you start Campaign, then pick Infected and play, when you start, you'll start as Nick. It'll only let you play as the Infected in the modes that have the "playercontrolledzombies" "1", command.

Yeah I was thinking about having a Custom CO-OP Mutations list. Keeping the current one only for Valve's Mutations.

Technically speaking, people don't need the add-on to join you. They need the add-on to see your lobby/game.
Simply stated, if you host a previously released official mutation lobby/game, your friends should be able to join you without any issues or add-on needed (via invite or in-game friend list). In addition, you'll also be able to connect to official servers, without the potential issue of running into servers that are running other mods.
But if you wish to play player-created mutations with your friends, then they WILL need this add-on.
Anywho, still looking forward to that release of versus co-op next Friday, Rayman! :D

I did this before and it worked. Now it doesn't for no apparent reason. I thought maybe I misremembered what I had done, but apparently not. Any ideas?

Actually, "Room for One" is slightly glitched. Under the official mutation, you're only able to host a lobby with the selected campaign and it starts off in the finale. However, with this add-on, you can choose the starting map. And if you choose the finale and vote to restart the campaign, you'll start from the beginning.
If you're doing this for the expert achievement, it might be best to just do it in "Gib Fest". Bots + unlimited M60's = win. ;)

I got Room for One to work just by using the console to load the finale. Beat Dark Carnival with it. I've been doing some Gib Fest too, beating Dead Center. I tried Swamp Fever with Gib Fest and beat it (without it counting since I changed difficulty in game). Subsequent attempts the double tanks have been to much for me to handle

Wow just played a great game of bleed out. I didn't get to play it before. It's a lot of fun. Thanks for this addon.

Also, I joined one bleed out game that appeared to be created by people who had a friends only game and they didn't seem to know about this addon. I'm not sure what all this means. They were cool but you could tell they were ready for me to start team killing; which of course I would never do.

I'm not sure how to fix Special Delivery. Anything I do seems to not fix the issue. Does anyone know how I can fix it? For those that don't know, when you complete, or die on a map, the game loads the normal Campaign game again, instead of the Special Delivery game.

I don't know, I think keeping the co-op functionality would be a nice idea, if even for a variation or similar custom mutation. Just ramp up the amount of Special Infected that appear.

My custom Mutation "Special Delivery" is like that. If only I could fix it correctly. Anyway I looked and there's no way that I can make it completly solo. Just consider it an added bonus.

yeah i'm pretty sure bleed out is supposed to be like that. It's really hard. I just spent like three hours trying to the parish on expert bleed out. Only made it about halfway through the fourth map in three hours. It's HARD. really hard and we even had four players.
There may be another strategy to this mutation but as far as I can tell you just have to rush, you barely even have time to pick up your team mates because the zombies just don't stop
Plus bleed out has to be the same to play it on official dedicated. If it were different, I don't think it would work.

Euclix has it right. During Bleed Out, the panic event is never-ending, forcing you to rush through the map. Luckily, though, the majority of the horde spawns behind you, so it's not too bad as long as you don't linger in one place too long.
I think the campaign that's easiest to do Bleed Out on is The Passing; mostly due to the fact of getting lucky with a cache of adrenalines or pills. But it's too bad that it doesn't let you carry two pills/adrenalines since most of the time, you won't have a pack to carry (at least defibs still spawn).

The problem is that in maps like the quarter and the cementary or even the fair grounds, there are loop around points where the horde that was behind you, is now suddenly in font of you. And this creates a very sticky situation. The passing doesn't have too many of these. Probably only on the first map where you back track on that street before the wedding.

I know they wont get gas cans in Dead Center, and The Passing. I believe they'll start the other finales, not sure though. Otherwise you can switch teams, start the finale, and switch teams again.

You should see some extra icons in the list. I can't remember the names offhand but I think it's custom mutations, vs mutations, etc. It's the same area where you would select single player, campaign, versus, etc. Wouldn't hurt to try to copy it into the addons folder instead of just double clicking it.

The download link has changed so please click the link at the first page. I had to remove the hidden maps and include them in another VPK, because the maps are what caused some Mutations to not work. Thanks to Valve's Kerry Davis for helping me fix Special Delivery.
If there's any problems please let me know and I'll fix them for next Friday's update.

Would it be possible to make a mutation that is in fact pitch black with the only light being the one from your flashlight? That would be some scary ♥♥♥♥!

IS pitch Black supposed to be just you alone, I think a version with fellow teammates would be kick-♥♥♥. Since it is really cool how you can only see like 2 feet, I can never spot a hunter in his black hoodie, it's terrifying. I can hear him though haha.

One problem though; other SI spawned. I think I saw everything apart from Boomers at one point or another. Not in the same numbers as Spitters, and mostly towards the end of maps.
Dunno if you can fix it or if that's Karma Jockey's deal.

Wow, this is great. You need to shorten the descriptions though. We know they are Mutations by the icon. Maybe just call them Scavenge, Coop, Singleplayer, etc. Looks too cluttered right now.

Wow. one man army is the most impossible mutation ever. I beat hard rain 2 in lone gunman after the tank spawned outside the elevator down 4 times in a row. I can't even beat the first level of dead center in this. If a spitter spawns in the entry hall, you die. The one time one didn't, I made it to the safe room B+W with 99 health and a hunter spawned inside it.
Edit:
- Madness finales never trigger. The horde just keeps coming, the campaign hangs when it can't spawn the tank.
- is "Spitters" supposed to spawn 3+ incap SI at once? I sort of assumed it would spawn 0.
- Since we can choose friends-only or otherwise in server setup, I don't think you need separate icons for them in the multiplayer modes.
Other than that, excellent work as I see it!

@Karma Jockey, I only played it for a few minutes on Dark Carnival 1, but yes the skybox showed and it was really dark. I actually got scared when the first wave of hunters spawned!
@Rayman I have to agree with the people saying that there should not be separate icons for online and friends games since you can switch it in lobby. Just default it to online and let people change it. Otherwise, this is excellent, thanks so much for putting it together!

Else, I have two major bugs since I put this mod,
I don't hear the sounds of the weapons and the jockey don't walk anymore, they just slip on the floor lol

Edit : In "Spitters!" mutation, in the map of dark carnival (I don't know if it's the same in the others campaigns) in the rollercoaster and the concert, tanks, hunters and smoker spawns, and it's a bit hard x)

No problem. I'll probably remove the friends only icons. At the time I didn't know you could change it in the lobby. I know it'll free up some space, look for the changes in next Friday's update.

I saw that too but in my case, if I selected infected, it just loaded me in as Nick. It didn't crash for me.

That's the way it's suppose to work. I wouldn't have done it if you could play Infected in other modes.

Yeah I know, I got "sb_takecontrol Ellis" binded. But it would be neat for when you Join a game with say Ellis available and it gives you like Coach for example, the game should know I use Coach 1% of all games haha.

I think there's a trick. I don't know for sure, but I think it's something like this. Pick a lobby > Pick your character > Then enter the map commands > Then when it loads you should be playing as the character you've choosen. Hope this helps.
Also descriptions shouls be up in a little while.

Versus co-op is the only one I care about.
It record these stats online, same with Scavange Co-OP and Survival modes. I played 27 minutes of HORDES and it recorded it in the stats.
But yeah I like Versus Co-Op except when the bots decide to teleport around a panic event. Ah well I still won since a human SI is smarter :P

Yeah, well, The Sacrifice doesn't work too well with it; I've tried, and it randomly selects one of the survivors on the bridge as being the first one out.
It's still better than having each chapter selectable though =P

However, it seems like there's no limit to how many times I can get incap'd by a hunter's pounce, even on expert difficulty. But getting incap by any other method, such as hunter swipes or fire, will then, and only then, restarts you back at the safe room.
Hope it can get fixed soon, 'cause it's a pretty awesome custom mutation! Keep up the great work, by the way, Rayman! :)

Iam using a script from Last Man on Earth, which only revives you when you're incapped by SI. It was a problem with LMOE when it was out as well.

I had a suggestion for the Versus COOP mode.
I played it with a few friends last night and we had a great time practicing some tactics. One additional feature that would be really great though (I've already seen it on a few modded servers once) was the ability to change infected type by using the right mouse button while in ghost mode.

I have an idea for a Survival map. In Dead Center, after the elevator, in the fire rooms. Have the end blocked off so you have to stay in the flaming parts and have the survivors start in the elevator when the elevator is going down. Put the items either in the elevator (unless they'll float away when it's going down) or right outside of it.

I always thought Realism Versus would be more balanced and true to itself if the SI players couldn't see the outlines of the survivors just as the survivor's can't see their teammates' outlines.

It wouldn't be more balanced, the survivors are still OP in realism. If you add that then SI would stand no chance. I mean the SI count on ambushing the survivors, if you can't see exactly when they come around a corner for your attack then you're screwed. To be honest it might sound good on paper, but I don't think it would play well.

I've had a few random people join my mutation games. But for the most part, this mod is for playing with friends. You just aren't going to see enough people download it for it to there to be any significant amount of people playing these mutations.
And of course the upside is that the player base is not divided. If valve were to release all mutations, you would probably see some significant division of the player base(something like 5-10 percent, maybe less). Because of this, I think what rayman has done here is the best solution for people wanting to play all mutations. You can play with randoms or friends but it doesn't divide the players base.

Did you put the VPK's in your addons folder? Don't put the ZIP folder in there.

I've updated my mod! The changes include the following.
Added my Infestation Mutation.
Added Valve's Iron Man Mutation.
Changed the main-menu so it now only has one of each Mutations lists, instead of two.
Made changes to Boomer Shooter, decreased the Boomers health and speed.
Made changes to Common Problem, should be less laggy but still tough enough.
Made changes to Versus CO-OP, now the Survivor bots can't teleport.
Updated the hidden maps VPK, Room For One support for all maps.
I think that's all the changes... Have fun!

Removing the bots' ability to teleport may have hampered their survivability by a bit. Prior to the change, they were able to teleport to a downed survivor when their pathing is screwy. This may be "unfair" but you should factor in the fact that they're only bots, and giving a slight advantage might make it a bit more challenging.
As a matter of fact, without their ability to teleport, it can also be a show-stopper. Earlier, in the first stage of Dark Carnival, Ellis bot got stuck on top of a car, and ended up holding the whole team up. He wouldn't move until I jockeyed him, causing his team rushing to his rescue.
Overall, I think the bots' ability to teleport is a good compensation to their lack of human brain-power and, can sometimes, fix a show-stopping bug.
Good work, still, by the way, Rayman. :D

The main reason that the menu the way it is now is because it is categorized by play mode. Listing it under one big list might make the main menu look tidier, but it will be harder to tell, for example, which mutations are for co-op play and which are for versus-style.

I'd been going to comment on being unable to connect to a steamgroup server (had to use official instead) but todays update/menu change seems to have sorted this issue. :D

You could have sb_unstick 0 in this if Valve ever fixed their pathing. They get hung up on the stupidest things.

So basically you need them to teleport. It can be unfair at times but it's gamebreaking if not.
Also it's sad they have so many issues...
-Dead Center: they get stuck at the Cola
-Dead Center: their pathing is messed with the alarm run.
-Dead Center: Finale they will not do.
-The Passing: Finale they won't do.
-Dark Carnival: They will not turn on the lights unless you can get them to the button.
-Swamp Fever: They won't start that finale, they just hang out at the house.
-Swamp Fever: They can get stuck under the dock, sometimes they won't teleport.
-Hard Rain: Noticed no issues.
-The Parish: AT the float they get stuck at a fake door. Not sure if they teleport past that one.
Sadly you can only do about 2 campaigns maybe fully with all bots.
Maybe if their button range was turned way up lol.

I am having an issue I can select the mutation example Versus coop but I can't figure out how to host a local server with that mutation or online even.
If you can select the mutation, what seems to be the problem then? :confused: It's probably worth noting that with this add-on, customized mutations must be played on a local server or a dedicated server which has this add-on installed also. In addition, if you friends want to join you in a customized mutation game, they will also need the add-on installed, too. Fortunately, official mutations that were previously released by Valve should work on official servers (even ones hosted by Valve) and your friends won't need to install the add-on to join the lobby or game.

I think the bots were designed to not hit the button which starts the finale under any condition. To them, it's like some forbidden button that shouldn't be touched. The only other time that I've seen this aside from finale is Dark Carnival roller coaster event. Luckily, a quick fix to this is just to switch team, hit it for them, and then switch back.

Exactly, couldn't have put it better. Even scavenge finales can be finished, only catch is you have to finish them both playing as survivors, but still can be done.

No they hit finale buttons, it's just they won't go near the lights button as it's so far away. Instead they hang out at the other button under the tent.
When I played with cheats I use warp_all_survivors_here to get them to hit that button.
Also Infestation is brutal, damn hunters always get a claw or two in, even when stumbling. Valve gotta do something about the Charger and Hunter hitting you while stumbling.

I haven't experianced any problems with my Mutation Mod. It might be because of your other plugins?

It's "versuscoop", without the quotations of course.

Yeah you place them in your addons folder... and that's it. Then you play L4D2 like normal.

Is it possible for you to enable a more detailed lobby configuration for creating games?
Currently, when i go through the menu i end up creating a public lobby set to Official Dedicated server. I'd like to be able to specify Friends only and Steamgroup Server before creating it.
It's not a huge issue, but definately something i'd like to see if it can be done :)

I think Valve would have to do this maybe? Cuz' when you do that in normal mode thats how it sets up. Unless Rayman can do that :confused:

Ah, i see that now, i'm used to automatically picking the Play with Friends option.
The last version of the mod had something similar but it made the menus alot more messy, it definitely looks better as it is now so if there isn't another way to do it then it's probably best left as is. :(

Ok one thing thats really starting to piss me off with versus COOP, is the damn bots Spitters and Boomers, I get an epic Jockey goin and stupid Spitter/Boomer comes up, claws me riding a survivor and instant kills me. I'm gonna purposely Grief my bot team!
I thought I'd share that, it's driving me insane!

Yeah, that's fair enough, it does look alot better as it is currently. Just need to be quick setting permissions as the mod gets more popular :D
