View Full Version : Great game, but Oh My God such awful controls

Hello,
This game is really good, but the controls are so hard to use and so awful. My girl insists on walking backwards and getting stuck in corners and then when I swivel the camera it shoots off and she's running in the wrong dang direction. It's like resident evil 2 or something (IIRC)!
I think this game has a lot of potential and could be awesome if it wasn't so frustrating. I feel bad that I've now given up. Due to re-spawning tough monsters and not being able to maneuver out of things I just couldn't take it anymore. I did try to just let myself get used to it, but no go sorry.
Could you look into a control interface a la Diablo 2, Dungeon Siege, Sacred? Where I have to click click click but at least I know where I'm going, and the camera comes nicely with me. That would be totally awesome.
Keep up the good work. It's great to see a quality game from such a small team. Good stuff.
Just please fix the controls so I can play it. :(
So glad I only paid $2, if I'd paid the full price I'd be pretty pissed off.
Thanks!

Thank you for your feedback.
We choose WoW like control style, because we find it most common at this moment. Regarding tough monsters, you can change combat difficulty in options - anytime and/or you can level up a little bit.

I'm not too fussed on tough monsters, you just have to keep at them. It's just the controls. They are wow like, and common, but that doesn't mean they are the best ;)
Is there a way where you can walk backwards and it just turns and runs the other way instead of her walking backwards? It's very annoying.
Thanks for responding so quickly!

For me one of the issues was no brightness control. I went into a cave and all i saw was black with odd shapes. I'm guessing the devs were going for atmosphere, but all it did was frustrate the hell out of me. They seem to have forgotten that not everyone has great eye sight.
Also that UI is just plain old horrid, it takes up way to much room and has nothing on it. You need to keep it simple guys, look at the Titan Quest or Torchlight UI. That's the sort of thing you want to aim for (personally i love the Torchlight UI). Also something else i noticed, there's no indicatinon as to if a slot has been activated. Press 2 for the special attack and there's no timer or anything to say if you used it or not.
Controls wise, it is fiddly, and takes some getting used to and i do wish it was more set like other RPG's, but it's not TO bad.
What i did find frusrating more than anything though was the loot drops. EVERY critter i killed was droping items for lvl 18+, which considering i was lvl13 meant they were useless. Sold everything at the vendor, and it was even worse there. Had my gold went to buy stuff and they were for levels 20+ even saw some there for lvl40, and im sure i saw a lvl80 sword.
The vendor should scale with the character, so if i open him up he's going to have some items around my level. Having some higher level items is nice, but it's better to have some my chars level, especially when you first begin the game.
However, for what it is, and what it costs; you can't go wrong. Not many games you buy for £1.50 have the potential this one does, and even at it's normal price it would be considered a good buy i feel
I'll have another bash at it when i get home

bunnzy: I think that the controls aren't that bad. Just bear in mind that right mouse button rotates your character and camera, while left mouse button rotates the camera only.
Ryuubei: Actually, there is an indication that a slot has been activated. Icon in this slot greys out and slowly starts to get color again. And I've put the brightness control on the list, it might be added in a future patch. Maybe these two things relate. And about loots and vendors: It might take some time for all the equipment slots to be filled, but I think that you can get better gear from killed enemies quite regularly. Personally, I don't buy anything from vendors, because their goods is overpriced and I better wait for some nice item that drops from an enemy. Even though there may be a few top-notch items that you can't get from enemies and have to buy them from vendors. But that occurs in the later stage of the game, when you already possess more money than you need for buying the special abilites.

The problem with the UI then seems to come down to it's size. We have this huge UI but the icons are really small and hard to see. How about increasing the size of the icons a bit more do they're easier to see?
Oh, is it possible to set the camera so that if i turn with the arrow keys the camera turns as well.

Hmm, what resolution do you use in the game, Ryuubei? Because at 1280x1024 the icons don't seem so small to me. Maybe it's a problem of higher resolutions. Nevertheless, I think that fiddling with UI would be too time-consuming and there is unfortunately no room for that now.

i actually reduced it to 800x600 and it didn't get any bigger sadly.
Press 2 for the special attack and there's no timer or anything to say if you used it or not.
on mine it's goes grey and starts getting colour while recharging.
or the number lights up.this is on the warrior skills not tried the other skills yet.
Anyway the only bug i'v come across is the girl were she's at the boat man guy on the hill.
I talked to here and had to meet her somewhere.
I was running around for ages could not find her.
Quit game, then loaded later only to find her near the rune.
I cannot understand why she did not appear there in the first place.
Anyway i'm not that far into the game yet,i just hope i don't have to keep quitting and restarting the game to get things to appear.
but so far i am enjoying the game.

I really want to like this game. The setting is great, it's visually appealing... but I just can't really play it. During fights the camera will either swing behind large trees, obscuring my view, or if I'm in a tight space it will zoom up to right behind my shoulder and stare forward, so the thing attacking me is barely visible. It shouldn't be possible for an outdoor section to feel claustrophobic, but the camera antics (perhaps combined with a large number of monsters right outside the gate) make it hard to maneuver or evade.
For people who've played through the game, did you have floating camera on or off? I'd be curious, because both gave me a pretty hard time.

I've just bought the game and it is downloading. For £1.60 I'm guessing that what everyone is complaining about is obviously true. However, I am probably a hypocrit in the sense that I didn't bother to buy this game back in June when it's full price was still only £7.99. So if I am buying it now for £1.60 am I expecting a game free of bugs, or a game where everything is polished and perfect?
Well, I'm not expecting miracles, and I find it quite refreshing to see that the developers are active within this forum listening to bugs, issues and suggestions by players ALL of which bought their game for £1.60. If they make a patch for it that fixes a few things then great, but I personally am not expecting one. I'm just hoping for an RPG game that is at best somewhat interesting. I bought the game obviously for the price, but someone posted earlier that if you liked Titan Quest, or a Mythology setting, then I ought to give it a go.
I like bargains, and whether it be a digital game, or something dodgy from a Car Boot Sale, if you've paid next to nothing for it, then I won't be upset if it falls apart after a few hours :)

Have just played the game for a quick hour or so. My first impressions are that this is a game I think I will like a lot. The camera and movement controls are very "wow-like" as someone pointed out before, and I love it as I used to be a heavy-duty WoW player up until about a year ago.
The only thing I've come across so far is that there is no mouse speed control over the camera, and it moves quite fast. I will take a look to see if there is a config file somewhere to see if I can adjust it.
Gotta dash now, the Missus wants me off the PC! :D

Yeah but I don't recall that WoW and other MMO's would switch up how the A,D keys act according to whether left or right mouse button is pressed. They now switch between turn and strafe for me. I'd like A and D to always be strafe and for WQ, WE (or maybe just Q & E) to also provide diagonal movement. I noticed backward diagonal movement wasn't possible, but I won't fuss to much about that.
Another thing was you could hold left mouse, move the camera around to face the character, press W and he'd run towards the camera as expected but then hit any other key and the char would flip around to face the same direction to which the camera is pointing.
Maybe the end result would not be exactly how WoW was (its been too long) but it seems that this was how DDO and Lotro worked. You ran around with WASD and either used left mouse button to position the camera independently of how the char was being moved or you used right mouse button to basically drive the character during forward movement. It seems like the controls were headed in this direction but it's not complete or something. Perhaps I am wrong here :) Out of curiosity does anyone really want their character to turn left/right as opposed to strafe?

Controls are a bit rough but the game is very nice, especially for a 2eur\usd purchase.
Tried the demo and then bought a copy, the demo alone was worth 2 eur

That is actually how WoW does it; I can't explain the logic behind it, but that behaviour is consistent with WoW's.

I don't recall my first steps in Numen any more, but I don't think I had such problems with controls as some of you guys have. All I do is what dblade wrote - I hold the right mouse button and drive my character through the game world with the W key and strafe with A/D when necessary. And when I want to look at something I don't want to turn to occasionally I press the left mouse button. And that's it. I still think that the most important thing about controls is that the right mouse button moves both your character and the camera, while the left mouse button moves the camera only.
T@F: About your sibling: Lots of people had problems finding their brother/sister, so we added a short tip into the manual saying: "If you can't find your sibling anywhere on the map, go and rest. Much like you, your sibling likes walking the island at night and you'll get another opportunity to meet up." In another words: Your sibling appears on another location (near the ferryman or near the ruins) when you change from day to night or vice versa. ;)

Yea, this game has exactly the same control setup as WOW does. Obviously Ive set the A and D keys to strafe left/right, which is how I used to have it in WOW. As I said before though, the speed of the camera control with the right mouse button held down whilst moving is a bit too fast and needs a slider so we can change how fast it moves.

DiceDuP: This slider is on the list now, but I cannot guarantee that it will be added in the next patch.
