View Full Version : Worth 5 dollars.... IF

I got RFG back in the holiday THQ pack last year and played it quite a lot... it mostly sucks, and it often sucks bad. A billion technical problems (read this forum to see the most common ones) combined with the atrocious GFWL system, a bad job of porting it from console, and just general lazy efforts of AI, scripting, and a lot of cutting corners makes it a headache for all but the most forgiving console kiddie. Expect pain, and a lot of it, unless you have low expectations and just like seeing stuff explode with physics.... but if you want that you could do it better with countless other titles...
I would put this game's overall quality similar to something like Mirror's Edge or Saboteur (but a bit lower, even). Possibly worth a playthrough for a really low price, and really slick in presentation, but there isn't a whole lot there once the initial rush passes. It's a really "dumb" game; doesn't require critical thinking, strategy, or tactics, and holds your hand most of the time. I beat the two games I just mentioned (which are also very "dumb"), but I never beat RFG. I couldn't stand the repetitive missions and stupid as dirt AI that spawns all over the place no matter where you are.
Just a friendly warning from a huge fan of Volition's other big series... Saint's Row (which has even bigger technical problems but is, at its core, FUN)... flame away, but I'll probably never read it! :)

Could you please read this:
Does the game allow you to use any controller you want or does it force you to only use a 360 controller?

That's crazy! I enjoyed Mirror's Edge and I'm just about don't wrapping up Saboteur to 100%... Now I'm going to have to get this game judging from your tastes. If you hate what I like ... then I must like Red Faction too!
Awesome :) Thanks!
(I'm serious too)

I know you are and I am not insulted. I'm sure there are people out there that really love Mirror's Edge and Saboteur -- they are both very mainstream, apolitical, "story by committee", simple to grasp for all ages (though the nudity option in Saboteur was quite refreshing and rare to see in a game), with artwork overly iconic and simple to the point of being a comic book, extremely fake characters (and in the case of Saboteur the worst accents I have ever heard uttered in a video game) with very simple gameplay and ideas designed to be experienced on a huge HDTV from across the room while inebriated.
Like I said, I beat both of those games and like them better than Red Faction, but they are all very similar. Red Faction shares the above elements with Mirror's Edge and Saboteur.
Nothing about any of these 3 games is intelligent, thoughtful, or demonstrates the qualities that A-List titles display. Or even B-List titles for that matter. Except for the slick production and gobs of money thrown at these projects they probably wouldn't even exist, because a committee is incapable of making a game with a soul. Think about that.

meh, even an indie game can be "A"-list if it's good. A game is good when it's fun, and doesn't take millions of dollars to make a fun game, so that rubbish about A or B list (which are just synonyms for "I like it" and "I don't like it") is only a matter of personal taste.
Sorry if I sound rude but when people can't accept that someone else likes something he doesn't, and tries to make it seems that he is "smarter and thus right", it really gets on my nerve.
You think it sucks, he thinks it's good, that's all. There's no one wrong here because it's just a matter of personal tastes, and tastes are never wrong...just different.

I would consider the RF series very good and top notch (i dont go in for "a-list/b-list" or "AAA vs A"). RF2 i've only just started playing and its perhaps the weaker game of the series, but RFG is a very fun game (note this is MY opinion as are everyones voices here, all opinion is valid!)
RF 1 was a fun little adventure and still is i think, im about to go back and play it again. RFG has some technical issues here and there. Probably exacerbated by this growing trend of people who experience ONE problem, take no steps to fix it, and rant on the nearest forum that the game shouldn't have been released, should have been patched yesterday, and questioning the possibility of legal action (this isn't aimed at anyone in this thread or even forums though).
I love action games, blowing stuff up, and good fun. I'm an RFG Hammer Legion Member of course, logging over 100 hours and counting. OP i'd like to hear exactly where this game shows signs of giving "pain... and lots of it" the AI i agree isn't going to beat you at chess, but its not meant to, it just meant to be there in the background adding extra detail. I'm not saying your opinion's wrong, but i think you may be exaggerating when you say "all but the most forgiving console kiddie" (i hate consoles, gamepads? wtf!) will not enjoy this game. It's very good IMO!
