Does RF2 have any kind of multiplayer? The steam page says no but I wanted to make sure because I had, in the past, seen multiplayer videos on youtube saying it was the pc version. I also remember a multiplayer on consoles.

This game has a skirmish mode. AFAIR it's just some sort of deathmatch with bots (so basically MP-like without netcode). It might have real MP on consoles but for the PC, they just scrapped the netcode.

only with bots I guess

That is a shame. I remember the multiplayer being unbelievably fun with a few friends and some bots.

Do you think it is still worth getting? I never played through the single player despite putting unmeasurable amounts of time into the multiplayer. I hear some of the boss fights are noteworthy, anything else?

The game is awful. It's a poor console port. They managed to make the game look even slightly worse than the first game. Gameplay's repetative, the story is much of excitement. RF2 is not worth getting. Get Red Faction instead. It even does have active multiplayer.

I am already planning to get the first since I never played it. Hopefully people still play it.

I do remember the twist boss battle at the very end of RF2, I had seen my brother do it, so the surprise, if it was one, is not there for me.

Are RF2's visuals really worse than the first? I remember the console at least having decent visuals... then again my expectations then were not very high. I think the whole highlight of the game for me was that I could blow up stuff and "dig" my way to my enemy. I used to love that one map where there is a fort of sorts on each side with several floors. We used to lob stuff back and forth. I suppose if the multiplayer is missing than my nostalgia is for nil.

FYI: GeoMod is more or less nonexistant in RF2.

Thanks. I remember that on a few maps there was not much in the way of GeoMod. I may have to pass on this one if GeoMod is missing on the single player for the most part. It is a shame to because the multiplayer maps that did use it were incredibly fun.

Geomod is even more non-existant in RF2 than RF1. There is a remake of the Warlords map from RF1 in RF2 where you barely can destroy anything at all - while in RF1 you could dig deep tunnels in that map. RF2 has a lot more "interactive" objects though, even though you can't blast apart much, just about everything reacts in some way to explosives - like displaying damage and stuff, but you can't find alternate routes by blowing up a wall as you could in those few maps of RF1 where Geomod was used.

And yes, RF2 is a bad console port. The PS2 version has fun split screen multiplayer, and Volition removed the splitscreen stuff - but it still doesn't have any online component, meaning you can only play against bots. I had kind of hoped they would have patched something in after release, but it seems it had no patches at all, and no fan made mods to fix that stuff either.

Those tunnels aren't all that fun to build to be honest.

I like Red Faction 2. If you take out the tunnel building, i'm afraid there's not that much destruction in Red Faction 1 either.
