Hello, I'm getting CoDSP.exe and CoDSP.exe has stopped working, any idea why that is? I tried re-downloading it, verify game cache, nothing helps..

Same exact problem. I finish the battleship level, then when it starts Stalingrad, it crashes... CODsp.exe stopps working.

Seems strange that this error is occuring "now" with several users within days of one another. (I've searched the web and can't find any record of this problem happening before)

I'm now having this problem. Can't even start it.

It's usually a good idea to give detail to the exact nature of the the error and decribe a little about your computer.

The problem occurs when attempting to load Stalingrad in single player version 1.3. Windows will encounter a problem and wants to 'close program'

-Windows Vista64
-ATI X1300Pro

In this case, simply updating the ATI drivers to the latest know release resolved the problem.

The only way i can play it on my 5770 ATI card is to run 10.0 or 10.1 video card drivers other wise COD and CODUO will not work. COD2 still working with the lastest drivers. So download those old 10.0 or 10.1 drivers if you want ot play with ATI cards.

I just bought all CoD games from Steam, never played them and fancied starting from the beginning, and CoD 1 will not run.

I get CoDSP.exe has unexpectedly quit error message in Windows 7 x64 when I run it.

Yes I have ATI/AMD card, two 5870 in Crossfire, and driver is Catalyst 11.8 version.

Steam should have a warning that it doesn't work on ATI/AMD hardware any more.

Problem

OK, have read the internet and it looks like the problem is caused by a problem in AMD/ATI video drivers and in particular their OpenGL support.

It used to work fine, but they broke something a while ago and haven't fixed it.

Solution
So the solution is to use an older OpenGL DLL from AMD/ATI instead, it is called atioglxx.dll

One of the good things about Windows is if you want to use alternative DLLs you simply put them in the same folder as the EXE and they will be used rather than the ones stored in the Windows system. In this case we need to put a compatible atioglxx.dll into the ..\steam\steamapps\common\call of duty\ folder.

Implementation
Luckily some people have had similar problems in the past and have extracted just the atioglxx.dll which is the OpenGL part of the AMD/ATI driver and uploaded it to public locations -- which saves us from having to find an older and compatible driver on AMD's site and then manually extracting all the components, and then finding the single bit we want.

At first I used this one http://www.dlldll.com/atioglxx.dll_download.html (version 6.14.10.3966) only lets the CoD game run at 1024x768 -- no other resolutions, no matter if you try and change in the CoD game or in the config.cfg files. But it did work on Windows 7 64-bit and I could play the game.

Then I used this one http://www.gamefront.com/files/16696483/atioglxx.rar/ (version 6.14.10.9116) which not only worked, but also supports different resolutions. Hurrah!

So, you simply extract the DLL and place it in the same folder as the CoD EXE.

Additional: Custom Resolutions and Widescreen support
Furthermore, the second atioglxx.dll I link to here supports custom resolutions for the game, and also FOV change which means that I can run it in 16:9 or 16:10 widescreen modes and it's not limited to 4:3 square view.

So, I followed the instructions from Widescreen Game here http://widescreengamingforum.com/dr/call-duty and got the game running at 1080p.

Finally, I cranked up all the Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering in the Catalyst Control Center to their maximum, and the game runs at 1920x1080p and considering how old it is looks surprisingly good on my gaming monitor.

@StooMonster: Brilliant explanation! Thanks.

Second link doesn't work. (First, when installed, generates a different error...)

Ive finally managed to get them both working. This is how i did it, dont know if its just my computer or if it works for all but can try this...

First verify all the files on steam and defragment the cache

If you want widescreen 16:9 / 16:10 then follow instructions here and change the config file - http://widescreengamingforum.com/dr/call-duty

Download this atioglxx.dll - http://www.multiupload.com/CZ5E5D4N20

Place it into the COD folder in your steam folder

Run the game (which doesnt work - blank screen)

Exit that, open the COD folder again and delete the atioglxx.dll you just put in there.

Run the game again and it should work.

Try it, it works on mine so maybe it work on others.

finally got it working.
Do not change anything.
Go to AMD Vision Engine Control Center
Go to Gaming section > 3D Application Settings
Select Defaults then apply.

Done. Everything works, No problem whatsoever

Try running in compatibility for Windows XP and also check run as administrator.

Found this.

I finally worked around this problem, by simply following these steps:

#1 Restart your computer.
#2 Start the game directly from Steam (not the desktop shortcut).
#3 Run the game in safe-mode.
#4 Re-edit your games settings.
#5 Exit the game.
#6 Relaunch the game - enjoy!

Might be worth a try.

Do you know what patch you are on?

Ryanburd1

I'm guessing the latest patch because its the one that steam automatically updates it when you install the game.

I'm using windows XP.

Its friggin ATI , getting rid of thier OpenGL drivers adn cahnging them and screwing around with them. Im gettin gto the point, that i am very hesitant in upgrading drivers for AMD cards.

I had this problem a long while ago bacause of Open GL, then It was fixed, but just recently I get "COD.exe has stopped working" error at launch for both STEAM COD & UO, but the Retail versions I have both work fine.

EDIT:
Installed 1.9, now it works again. :)

My memory sucks but I think I got mine working by tweaking the graphics options. Best way to start is completely dumb down everything within the Nvidia/ATi control panel AND in the game, then slowly increase the options one at a time until the game stops, then you'll know what it doesn't like.

I had exactly this error too after the battleship level. Apparently, this problem is due to the ATI RADEON graphics drivers. You can choose to find old drivers and install them. But it did not solve my problem. However,i found a workaround.

Search the internet,:( find an old saved game file of Stalingrad level. Copy the file (eg- stalingrad1.svg) to CoD/main/Save folder. Then start the game and load the newly saved game.

Hey, it should work - it did for me. Good luck dears.

where did you find the folder when I google all I find is you saying you found it.....I am at the same spot...got in the boat and bingo error and the same thing happens in the UO game when trying to play it also...its almost like they corrupted each other...and yeah it is the ATI Radeon CCC crash .thing...that is another issue...ya update the thing and it made my monitor start washing out (faint color) and after several hrs of trying to fix it I gave up....so where the ---- is the svg file bro so I can finish this damn thing?

I also have the retail version with the patch but it also stops at the Stalingrad intro and says CoDSP.exe not working and windows will find an answer and get back to ya.....crapola...right when I was getting into it....and yes I have ATI Radeon Mobility Graphics and I tried updating that stuff and it got progressively worse...til after several times I got tired and quit...we gotta guy that says look for the stalingrad1.svg and download it but I have looked til I was blue in the face and all I get some wiki thing as a walk thru big deal....it is an older game but hell I can still find stuff for MS combat flight simulator that even still play online for crying out loud...

nah...that doesn't work either....I dumb it down to nothing and still get the .exe error and it also took out United Offensive too....now both games give the same error message and this after playing the CoD1 til I got to Stalingrad and UO I played past Foy and decided to go back and now both are shot....and changing the main to QUAKE.3 didn't do diddly.....don't cha just love ATI
