Since installing Deathspank I have not been able to get it to launch. From Steam the preparing window pops up and then closes; attempting to launch the game directly from its executable produces an error stating either d3dx9_43.dll is not designed for Windows or contains an error.

I have never encountered this error before except with Shank (I posted in that forum too but Hothead seems to read these forums and Klei not those).

Validating the cache, reinstalling, and updating DirectX do not help. I was hoping someone here might be familiar with the error or know of a solution.

Thanks

Unfortunately, a few people have seen this and uninstalling the game and reinstalling seemed to help so if you have already done this, I am uncertain what may be going on. However, launching the game from the exe is not a great idea. reinstall through Steam and then launch within Steam.

I tried this to no effect.

have you tried to rename the d3dx9_43.dll in the game folder to something else like _d3dx9_43.dll so that the game will not use it? there should be a version of that file in your windows folder.

you could also try to run dxdiag to see if there is something wrong with your directx installation.

The issue is with the copy in my Windows folder and dxdiag reports nothing.

did the directx install from the game did something?
have you tried to start the dxsetup.exe which is in the [path_to_steamfolder]\steamapps\common\deathspank\DirectX manually?

what os are you using?
