I posted this under TF2 also but I just got an email saying I should put it here.

***********************************

I have given and received gifts in TF2 and though I think it is a lovely idea to have and use weapons from particular friends or even generous strangers but also I think there is a problem with the system as it stands.

With the introduction of Vintage items many people, like myself, will work to ensure the weapons they carry are titled in glorious Blue, community weapons are instantly recognisable by their rarely seen Green (I would gladly wrestle honey badgers on hot coals for a community Medi gun).

Though gift items have a nice little note in the description the main problem with them is that potential gift givers know that if they do choose to spend £$€however-much-it-is-in-your-currency on a gift for everyone on the sever most people would get something very common of which they probably have a vintage version they would rather use.

My solution, make gift items Pink! This way they are instantly noticeable and those who receive them will gladly and proudly use and display their special version.

To stop this having any effect on gameplay/trading they should revert to being normal items when traded (or just be untradealbe). If Valve were to implement this I would also recommend a feature that stops you from receiving a double of a gift item – because that would suck.

Please tell me what you think of this idea, the whole point is to promote gift giving, as there is little incentive at the moment, without really effecting the game.

If you really like it please tell me who I should email this to as sadly the TF2 contribution site does not have an “Idea section” yet...

I have already sent it to Gabe but he is a busy guy...

I think that the separation of the items was a ridiculous idea, in fact their reasoning has more holes in it that a barrel of fish shot at with a gattling gun. It was supposedly to separate bought items from items obtained in a regular ("old fashioned") way, so why didn't they just make the bought items some horrible colour. Soon this game will have more items than a MMORPG.

I say no to further division, and gladly would accept if they got rid of it all together.

This is an argument I hear all the time and it is woefullly nonsensical. Would MMORPG player spend hours a day for weeks/months grinding to get items if there was an in game micro store where they could just get whatever they wanted? No, they wouldn't but that is EXACLTY what would happen to TF2 without the option to buy/trade. I challenge you: Name one popular MMORPG where you can buy anything you can unlock?

Introducing the Store and the trading system was a great move by Valve to ensure it would not become an MMORPG, as players were not forced to play for hours for the right items to drop. As I'm just starting uni I can't play as much as I would like so I didn't mind splashing out on the entire polycount pack, which though exspensive is but a small token of my gratitude to Vavle for all the free updates. And YES the prices have to be high enough to make sure crafting and drops are still the main ways to get items.

so why didn't they just make the bought items some horrible colour This makes little sense either, why would they do that? Vintage items were a funny way of rewarding long term players without actually changing gameplay - the object wasn't to punnish store users as you seem to think, for no apparent reason.

It seems to me you are against purchasing items, which I'm afraid this post is not about, nor do I wish such a debate to develop in it. TF2 will never be a MMORPG as it is team based FPS, these item based aspects that upset you so much are only there if you want them to be. Valve made vintage items as a funny little reward for long term players, like a badge of honor, well aware that while they didn't change the actual game at all.

What do you mean by Division/separation? you know the colour of the item names changes nothing? The only reason this could possibly bother you is if you care whether your items are vintage or not and you clearly couldn't give a crap about these things.

But, to get back on topic, mine was a simple, silly, idea to highlight items given out of generosity and kindness without having any effect on gameplay at all, pink items would not get in the way of people who do not care and just want to play. - Please explain why you think this is not a good idea.
