View Full Version : COD:BO Killing my router?

Something very odd... When playing COD:BO all other computers on my network suddenly cannot connect to anything on the internet. The only thing that can run on the net during this time is COD:BO. Even if I alt-tab out to other apps while the game is running, nothing can connect. Starts a few min after launching the game and continues until I get out of game and restart my router. Just started since last patch. I can reproduce it consistently.

If I look in the router software, it shows my memory being full. Empties on a restart. But fills again after a bit when the game starts.

Anybody else?

I had a similar issue, Mine would die on me when I refreshed the servers.

So what I did was to check my router logs and it was blocking like a ton of ip's so my guess is that the router just became overloaded when refreshing the server list.

I disabled the firewall in my router and it worked out just fine for me.

Don't disable your router firewall, that's pretty dumb.

The reason is due to the large amount of bandwidth (bug) the stats transmission is taking. It's using a lot of upstream bandwidth unnecessarily. Will hopefully be fixed soon...

I'm seeing this issue also, Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato firmware. I just forwarded a coupla ports and the server browser quit working.

So, the more I fiddle the worse it gets.

OP here: yeah, I'm running this same router with DD-WRT current firmware. and I agree with the guys that took a log, I put a packet sniffer on the port, and it's a packet flood, it fills the memory, and then bricks everything going to any other port off the switch.

I set my priority down on the port, and the other machines can now at least connect, but slow. Massive amounts of DNS lookups even for packets returning an IP. What I'm guessing is that the memory fills, then requests are still coming in but with a full memory, it goes back and does another DNS lookup. I bet you this is where the lag comes in, and the high pings we're seeing.

truly bad netcode.

I have a Zyxel P-2602R-D1A (ISP: Telfort NL)
2 PC's running steam with black ops;
When server browser is loading on my system, my girlfriend's pc's internet stops working.
Same the other way around.
Sometimes the Zyxel just stops working entirely for a few minutes (in which no internet connection whatsoever is working).

Update your router firmware.

The reason is due to the large amount of bandwidth (bug) the stats transmission is taking. It's using a lot of upstream bandwidth unnecessarily. Will hopefully be fixed soon...

It is not the bandwidth, it is the number of UDP sessions it is opening up at the same time, which in over 9000 with this game and we all know what 9000 does. Sometimes a firmware update or router settings will fix it. Other times it takes a better router.

Update your router firmware.
Not only done that .. I tried older firmare versions too .. all no avail.

Sometimes a firmware update or router settings will fix it. Other times it takes a better router.

Or Black Ops netcode should be re-written so it doesnt kill modem/routers with UDP floods.

Had same issue, updated firmware fixed it for me.

I doubt it's the router/firmware. More likely the router settings being used.

Tomato v 1.28 here on my Buffalo WHR-HP-G54, no issues, using:

- the static DHCP feature to assign static IP's via MAC addresses on the 9 machines on the network.
- UPnP is enabled.
- forwarding 3074 TCP & 27000-27050 TCP+UDP to my gaming PC's IP (I did not forward the "3478-4380" block).
- QOS is disabled.
- Respond to ICMP ping is off.
- Maximum connections set to 4096.
- Using Google's DNS (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4)

I had several BO related router failures running Tomato 127 and 128 with similar settings.

Never did find a fix for that and now just bought a Cisco E3000 and seems better with DD-WRT firmware. Going on 2 weeks with no router failures from BO. Never saw this issue with any app or game until BO came along. That makes me think it has something to do with "DemonwarePortMapping" Which is a product used by Treyarch I'm guessing and it opens ports automatically *if* you use UPnP.

Makes no sense though, I had WRT54GL failures several times a week using the newer versions of Tomato formware and it didn't matter whether the UPnP was disabled or not.

Hey guys, I just connected my Linksys WRT54GL to resolve a problem with some other software uploading using UDP. Anyways, it seems to have also resolved the great majority my stuttering problem and I just bested 7 of my records and finished 6 challenges all in one match of HQ lol

I have the Linksys behind an AT&T 2Wire Uverse RG, it is a modem+router combo unit unfortunately. I setup both routers to use different subnets and I put the Linksys in the DMZ on the Uverse router. I am sure there are still problems with the game but thanks to the wonderful software that is DD-WRT I barely experience any stutter. There are still frame rate dips but they don't go under 45fps so it isn't a game breaker.

I am using:
Pentium Dual Core E6500 OC@ 3.8GHZ, 1600MHZ FSB, 4GB RAM
GeForce GTX 460 768MB
Vista 64 Ultimate

Interesting fact:
Before I did all that router stuff above I was able to play perfectly on my WinXP install, no stutter at all ever.
