Hi guys, Just been playing with the game an hour or so and I'm getting some weird graphics issues. At the start of the game, near teh first house you see, I go down to a campfire and I can see the graphics as I think they're meant to be.
But then I go up to the first ruins and to the house where you see Jan and there's this pervading fog/mist that desaturates everything. I'm not sure if this is normal? Also, in the first ruins you see en route to Jan, the inside is pitch black even with a torch. I don't know if this was on purpose or not, but I found it very difficult to navigate my way around the ruins.
Some info:
OS: XP
Card: nvidia 7900GS
I downloaded the hotfix here that was supposed to fix some graphics issues, as well as downloading the latest nvidia driver, but I still get the problem. Here's a link to a screenshot:

Hope you folks can help me out!

Your screenshot link is broken.
The problem you describe is well known with NVIDIA 6xxx/7xxx cards. Look for info about this on the Deepsilver forums. There's a great big sticky about it there.

Heh. I posted the exact same thing on the deepsilver forums, guess what the reply was?
This is indeed a known problem with the nVidia GeForce 6 or 7 serie (exactly same screen as you posted). Where did you buy the game ? For the retail version, it is fixed with the patch you applied; for the Steam version, the patch probably doesn't work and one needs to contact the Steam support.
Yeah like clownwolf I applied the hotfix and it didn't work for me. Shame, really.

It's obviously unplayable in that state. I'm sure that experienced Steam vets will have some advice for you on how best to proceed if you want to get your money back from Steam. Steam's actual practices when it comes to refunding purchases are a little more liberal than official sources make out. I've been with Steam for 6 years, but I've got no experience with trying to get a refund. I only know that it happens thanks to word-of-mouth.
You'll probably have to exhaust the Steam support process first. Just a guess.

One thing you might try is adjusting the contrast under video settings. I was having the same issue, your screenshot is exactly what I was seeing. I fiddled with all the video options and then turned the contrast up a bit and that seemed to work a bit for me.
I can't remember how good a fix, and I can't check it until after this weekend for you, but I remember it wasn't as bad afterwards.

Hi! I had exactly the same problem. Here's what worked for me:
It seems that the hotfix cannot override the latest patch already included in the Steam version of the game. What you have to do is insert all the hotfix files manually.
1. Download the unpacked files from the hotfix here:
http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showpost.php?p=10808263&postcount=104
2. Unpack the archive and rename the two files' within into "materials.p01" and "effects.p01" respectively.
3. Put these files into the "compiled" folder in your Risen directory. The location should be: Steam\steamapps\common\risen\data\compiled
Voila! Now it should work properly. Hope that helps.
P.S.: you can actually find the description of this on the WorldOfRisen forum here under "Problems with the hotfix and the recent patch":

Cheers!

thanks Gosling, it works
I also got an email from tech support:
Dear Customer,
thank you for your enquiry. Some customers who bought the Steam version of
Risen and who reported a similar problem used this workaround to get rid of
the black screen: Start the game by right-clicking the risen.exe file in the
corresponding program folder (Program
Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\risen\bin) and by choosing the option "run
as administrator".
not sure if above solution works, but Gosling's fix absolutely works so try that first if you have the same problem
thing is, you can't use torches or light spells anymore because its gonna be bugged after the fix

I'm only in the early stages of chapter 2, but I've explored most of the island and so far I've never needed or even wanted to use a torch or light spell. There's enough glowy stuff and ambient light in all of the underground ruins and the one sauron temple I've been to so far.

Iīve tried goslings solution. Iīve got the two files in number 2. But I canīt find the location: Steam\steamapps\common\risen\data\compiled
Steam is there, but when I open it I cant go any further. I donīt use to do this sort of thing so maybe there is a simple solution. How do I find the location?
