View Full Version : COD: Black Ops: Buy or no?

Hey all,

I've been considering buying this game as these are among my favorite types of games. BUT, after reading post after post after post of negative comments I'm actually glad that I waited! And you think the comments are bad here, go look at Amazon, where they average 2/5 stars after about 200 reviews!

http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Black-Ops-Pc/dp/B003JVF728/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1290277577&sr=1-1

With that I have a couple questions:

1. Are you happy you bought it?
2. After playing would you buy it again if you could go back?
3. Is it better than MW2 and/or BC2?
4. Should I buy it now?
5. Is it worth $60?
6. If I waiting and got it 50% would it be worth it then?

Thanks so much for feedback!

Wait a few months.

But more importantly, do you have the system to run the game? I can easily say yes to all those questions, but I'm in the smaller group of people that can run the game maxed out completely playable.

Save your money.

1. 50/50. It's fun when it works, but Treyarch and Acti-♥♥♥♥-ion seem to ignore the PC community.
2. No. I'd ask for it as a gift instead.
3. Better than MW2 in terms of dedi-servers. Better than BC2 in terms of hit detection.
4. Wait.
5. $50 at most.
6. Yes, but since WaW is still over $50, don't expect 50% off anytime soon.

Yes I have a few systems, a couple of which are high end and SHOULD be able to handle any game that's not a bug-ridden piece of garbage.

Totally BUY IT!

Haven't had any issues with multiplayer yet, although some others have.Runs well enough on my E8400@3.6, 4870 OC rig.

The major improvement over MW2 is DEDICATED SERVERS. It makes all the difference and I am having a blast playing this. Also, for the money, there is a LOT of content here besides the singleplayer.

I was holding out, but this is definitely where the action is right now.

Yeah it's really a cat in a bag or a box of chocolate. You don't know what exactly you're gonna get. I am also one of the lucky few whom patch actually helped to but since SO MANY guys still have issues i cannot say with clear conscience "go get it asap".
Now (at least for now :) ) it works normally for me but since Betrayarch is insane, who knows what kind of problems are still there to be discovered :(

It's sad that we can't go buy rule of thumb for requirements and just assume if you have xyz CPU and abc GPU the game will run. I'd love to tell people with quad-cores and GTX 285s they can run it, but I've seen people with better getting 20FPS and stuttering. It's completely based on if the game likes your system, I guess.

Unrelated note: Did the patch have any effect on the people who were experiencing the stuttering? I've been running great since day one, but I've wondered if they delivered on their promise of getting the game working.

Good point. I think MW2 has been on sale, what, ONE TIME since it's release? COD publishers have no idea what the word "sale" means.

Single player is great, but a little buggy.

As with the last few games I've got associated with Steam, there are problems.

F1 2010 was a joke and patching through steam was a pain in the balls.

Black Ops worked fine for me until the patch came through Steam, now it wont start up.

Unless your ready to spend time hunting for solutions to problems and have a top end PC to dodge the graphic problems then I'd save your cash.

How exactly? To patch through Steam you basically sit there and do *nothing*. Is that a pain?

The patch read complete and asked me to restart the game, to which steam tried installing the patch a 2nd and 3rd time until Steam was restarted.

The game itself? wasn't released until many hours after it was meant to be made available. The whole release was handled very amateurish.

Now this. Granted the majority of bugs are to do with Treyarch's product, but how should patching a game through steam, which is meant to be more convenient, throw up problems?

1. Yes
2. Yes I would get it for 360 also so my bro and my dad can play it. Or to play with friends on XBL.
3. Better then MW2. Dunno about BFBC2 don;t own it only played in Beta.
4. Yes and No. With all the issues it can make the purchase not a good one. But then again, the game is filled with content to keep you occupied. Depends on who you ask. i'm on the fence when I recommended it to people right now.
5. I found my 60 bucks well spent even with the issues. SP is perfectly playable. MP is give or take. Playing from Day One on a dual core rig which is supposdly below spec and love it. LEvel 45 and Beat Campaign on Hardened. Wish I had more time to play but Uni :/

*disclaimer: did not purchase and probably won't since doesn't seem much better almost 2 weeks out...

After the game came out - saw all the issues PC gamers were having and decided to wait for patches. Seems for a lot of folks - the 2nd patch made it worse. IMO, you have to look in the right forums.

One of which is in here..
Two is to go to GameServers.com & it's not looking good there either: Another Fail Patch Link (http://forums.gameservers.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=42199)
Or places like FPS Admin (http://www.fpsadmin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=137):
Or Let me google that for you: Black Ops PC Bugs Issues (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=black+ops+PC+bugs+issues)
And IF you can even stay on their forums (because of the heavy traffic it gets unresponsive) go to Treyarch's forums (http://www.callofduty.com/board/viewforum.php?f=70).
But most of the feedback on all these IMO tells me to stray away from it & doesn't really surprise me that Treyarch duffed it up.

Pretty bad sign IMO when a P2P game like MW2 supposedly runs better than BO with dedis....

DON'T BUY IT.. If this isn't fixed and working properly by next weekend for the majority then it'll never be fixed.

Treyarch don't even have the decency to post why, when or what is happening. As far as I can see people see the odd comment on twitter.

Gibber
11-20-2010, 11:21 AM
If you can, get your hands on a PC/console/whatever and have a go. While there are a number of issues with the game, stutter and lag to name but two, that will hopefully be fixed, the game as a whole is likely to resemble what you see now.
If you like it, delay your purchase until you see the community's response to the latest patches and then decide whether to buy it or not.

As i've got lag issues with it, I don't recommend it, but as you can see from this and other threads, some aren't having these issues so it would be unfair to tar the game with my limited experience.

Listen dude, you seem like a reasonably seasoned gamer. STAY AWAY FROM THE COD FRANCHISE. Even when this game runs smooth, it sucks compared to 90% of the PC FPS market.

COD is a lot like tickle me Elmo. In 10 years you're going to look back and say WTF, why was that game so wildly popular.

That and all these damn kids whose parents didn't beat them properly now have "ADD or ADHD" and simple, ridiculously juvenile and horrible games like COD offer overly simple and horrible gameplay that can keep the attention span of these kids.

Buy it after the 2 new patches im avraging 60-90fps with no stuttering its poorly optimized and stuff for the pc but you're obviously going to be reading alot of the issues on a black ops forum. Most of the players are enjoying this game with no problems(id say atleast 70% have no issues)

To say there is no problem for everyone is not true though there is definatly alot of problems.

2. I sure would.
3. Much improved over MW2. Faster gameplay than BC2, but overall it's a different game. I play both. I wouldn't say one is better than the other.
4. Do you want to play it? If so, yes.
5. This is subjective. Was it worth the $60 to me? Yes. I'm going to get my money's worth out of Black Ops, and then some.

I don't regret buying it, I ignored the hype until a week before release.

Put in about 80 hours so far loving every minute of it - skipped the singleplayer though went straight to multiplayer.

I would say the determining factor of buying this game aside from ITS AWESOME and I LOVE IT, would be is your computer ~2 years old or less aka, newer with decent hardware, because having a higher end cpu and maybe a better gpu/sound card may help with some of the issues people are having.

Since I have NONE, and haven't minus the internet based lag the game had on release... I would say go for it, don't wait if you have the disposable income

1. No
2. nO
3. Of course not, BC2 and MW2 are more tatical shooters, black ops is a run shooter, u just have to run and spray bullets arround, without aim, and when u get well posicioned the game makes the enemy spawn in your back.
4. If u are crazy enogh to buy it after all my recomendations, no, wait until the bugs get fixed.
5. Man, u can spend, at the maximum, 10 bucks on this game...

I played almost all multiplayers shooters since 2005, and this game is one of the worses, some smg have more damage than the assault rifles, u don't use ur brain to paly, it's a bad multiplayer... Man keep on BC2 and wait for Vietnam and map packs ^^. I hope u listen me.

Its more or less exactly the same as cod4. Theres some minor differences, in some ways its better in some ways worse. I knew it was going to be like this and I bought it anyway. I missed out MW2 because of the no dedis, so thought I'd grab BO for some random mayhem every now and again, same old COD. Is it better than BC2? I wouldn't compare it to BC2 really. If I had to choose I'd say BC2 has more replay value BO is pretty shallow.

It's all subjective. I'm asking for your opinions all around. So, TO YOU, is it worth $60, in your opinion. That is what I should have asked.

6. Unquestionably yes, but what ISN'T worth it at half the original price?

Hope this helps.

I can think of about 20 games off the top of my head that, as far as I'm concerned, were not worth it even if the game had been free. Since it caused me to waste my time. Not only that, at the end I had to check my mail for a paycheck from the company since I really felt like I was beta testing that whole time.

Don't buy this game. Buy Mass Effect or Mass Effect 2. Those are the best games ever. Or buy some other game.

Thanks for the comments. I have about 500 games now, Mass Effect 1 and 2 among them, and I do love those games also.

The game was running fine for me before the patch. Now it stutters like mad and I have to constantly use /snd_restart in the console or the ambient sound stutters too. It went from, working fine to unplayable AFTER the bug fix patch. Other people's experiences may vary, but I would not recommend this game.

Looks like it's about 85% no and activision/treebark fanboiys check in at 15% (TreeBark must be holding back on the fanboiy paypal payments.

For me, it was a no-brainer. TreeBark = Magnum Fail.

COD died a horrible death after CODUO. MW was kinda fun for single player, but after that even single player doesn't register on any known meter that would measure one's enjoyment.

Save your money - buy a nice kitten. It'll give you years of enjoyment and you won't feel like blowing it's brains out on release day.

No, don't buy it. Same problems exist on this game as WaW, even alot worse! I didn't buy WaW so I got off good on that one. They may fix some of these major problems, but they will have a new game out by the time they figure out the small ones.

I have WAW and never really had problems with that game. At least not the problems people are reporting here.

But more importantly, do you have the system to run the game? I can easily say yes to all those questions, but I'm in the smaller group of people that can run the game maxed out completely playable.

My computer is 2+ years old and plays perfectly completely maxed. Just how small is this group of yours?

I would recommend buying it. Personally I had to reinstall Steam to get it to work, but once it worked, worth it.

1. Are you happy you bought it? As happy as you can be throwing away $60
2. After playing would you buy it again if you could go back?Only if I could steal it...then probably still no.
3. Is it better than MW2 and/or BC2?no/no
4. Should I buy it now?You should buy it never
5. Is it worth $60?It's not worth $6.
6. If I waited and got it half price would it be worth it then? The game is my toilet paper.

Having played Bo for the past three days, it has now become apparent that the maps are boring, the weapons too similar and the general atmosphere bad.
I also never thought dedicated servers could be worse than MW2 P2P hosting, but they actually seem to be. Whenever you shoot at someone, the game stops for a second until you died this way for about three times. After that, there still are laggy players and bs helicopters all over the place (unless you already unlocked ghost pro they can detect you).

Single Player was fun, though.

All in all, the game is worth 15$ in its current state, and 30$ with custom map support and fluent online gameplay.

2. After playing would you buy it again if you could go back? DEFINITELY
3. Is it better than MW2 and/or BC2? WITHOUT A DOUBT
4. Should I buy it now? I WOULD BUY IT THREE OR FOUR TIMES OVER, VERY FUN GAME
5. Is it worth $60? IT WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY
6. If I waiting and got it 50% would it be worth it then? IT'S ALWAYS WORTH IT, 50% OFF OR FULL PRICE. THE SOONER YOU GET IT, THE BETTER. I WOULDN'T WAIT. GET IT WHEN EVERY SINGLE PERSON IS ALREADY RANKED REALLY HIGH, HAS ALL THE MAPS MEMORIZED, ETC.

3. Is it better than MW2 and/or BC2? Better than MW2. Can't say anything about BC2 since I've never played it.
4. Should I buy it now? Probably, since price wouldn't drop anytime soon.
5. Is it worth $60? Right now, maybe not. Its bascially a $60 beta. But depends if you can run it or not.
6. If I waiting and got it 50% would it be worth it then? Yes.

Some interesting comments coming from you guys, thanks and keep them coming. I still haven't made up my mind yet. But it does look like people that hate this game FAR outweigh the people that don't. Most people come to forums for help or to complain so I'm also taking that into account. I also agree with people about the price; I don't think it's going down at all, not even during the massive Steam Christmas sale that's fast approaching.

I'd personally not buy it, I am getting bored of it as I am typing this. It is fun at first seeing how its new, it has somewhat better equipment than MW2 and less camping. But, its all pretty much run and gun as it it. The maps aren't big enough to have sneaky kills. I personally still like BC2 better, you don't have as much variation but at least it takes skills to kill people rather than spray and pray in most cases.

Wait till Xmas. Still buggy, its a risk to buy it at the moment.

It's very fun if you enjoy customization. Coming from BC2 this game blew me away.

It's usually best to wait til u get a gift card to best buy or steam before buying a 60 dollar game u aren't sure about. Especially the rocky start it had. Shame cause it is so deep with content.

lol, I'm sure all 85,950 people playing are having no issues, either... right? I'm not going to sit here and say that EVERYONE is having issues, but clearly quite a few are, and the same issues at that. That says something... and hell, even if you do have a super fast computer, dosn't guarantee that you won't have stuttering issues, so going by the min spec requirements is utterly useless. It's like russian roulette at this point @ if it'll work. Personally, I would not buy it at this point (I did, a day after it came out, much to my chagrin)... wait until the major issues have been fixed, if at all. I'd say don't give the company any more money, OUT OF PRINCIPLE, until these issues are ironed out.

After the debacle that was MW2 on PC I absolutely HATED Activision and swore that I would not buy from them on day 1 on midnight. But the game got really good reviews and so I tried single player first before buying it. It was decent, and I saw a video of the multiplayer and thought it was ok, but decided it wasn't worth $60 + tax (so like $65). So I went onto ebay and got it for $50. In the end, I'm ok with my purchase, I probably would buy it again; I have BC2 and MW2 and I thought the variation in the single player was well done and the MP feels more balanced than in MW2 (No more OP tubes), I haven't finished BC2 and rarely play MP so I couldn't really tell, but I def. don't think it's worth the $60 (not many games are these days) but if you can get it for $45 I think it would be ok. Idk about your budget though, I mean I have some pocket money to spend so I am ok with spending like $50 on a game like this but if it went down 50% I think it would be worth it IF you have the recommended specs:

So in summary:
1. Eh, ok with it. Not regretting right now.
2. Sure, at the price I paid. Not $65.
3. It's pretty much a Call of Duty game, there are some new stuff but it's nothing really revolutionary. Still fun though.
4. Depends on whether or not you need a shooting game. If you have friends that play though I would say sure because of the Zombie mode.
5. No.
6 Yes.

Keep in mind thought that I have an i7 930, 2 gtx 470, 6gb ddr3 ram and a 7200rpm hd and there were still some parts that dropped below 60fps because of the game not being coded properly. Idk if the new patch fixed it or not but a lot of people have been complaining about the performance; I know for a fact that the game lags at the game winning kill cam (which isn't a big deal).

Stormzzz

DO NOT BUY

I have a $5000 system, i7, 2x5870's, etc, I was playing the game with the odd stutter here and there to start with, but after the last patch, I now cant play the game for more than a minute without it crashing completely("FailOps.exe has stopped working"), the stuttering is also making it unplayable afer the latest patch. I know how to configure a PC, I have just completed a computer systems engineering course and also have, cisco, microsoft and COMPTIA A+ certs, in other words its not me or my system. Failarch dont seem to know what they are doing, yeah there are people playing it, but I see alot of them in game complaining about stuttering, etc, etc, etc.

Dont believe the morons who say I've got a quad core and it runs fine, so you must need a quad core, or I have 5870/GTX480 and the game runs fine so you need a new graphics cards, they havent got a clue what they are talking about let alone know how to troubleshoot PC problems. I have now piad $90US(here in Austrlaia on Steam, yes what a rip off I know) for a piece of crap I cant even play.

When and if it runs well, I'd actually say it's better than COD:Modern Fail 2, but not much good in the state it is in now for alot of people.

Buy a different game, dont support failing developers(or Hacktivision) who charge ridiculous prices for a broken product that they dont test(I also cant believe COD:Modern Fail 2 is still $90US on Steam here in Australia).

1. Are you happy you bought it?
Yeah definitely

2. After playing would you buy it again if you could go back?
Yes

3. Is it better than MW2 and/or BC2?
I still like BC2 better but after clocking about 100 hs into that one and seeing that they are not releasing new maps or anything it's getting old.

4. Should I buy it now?
Only if you're playing on a decent rig.

5. Is it worth $60?
That will depend on your dedication. Spending 300 hs on a game makes it worth a lot of money, if you'll leave it after 10hs then no.

6. If I waiting and got it 50% would it be worth it then?
That won't happen for some time.

2. I'd buy again if it's a new release of the series.

3. Due to changes of the streaks and perks, I'd say a bit better than MW2 but nowhere near BC2.
