How do you make cut scenes?

In half life 2 episode 2 if you start chapter one it shows what happened in episode 1 if you didnt get it and at the start of left 4 dead 1 & 2 so how do you make one of those with the good graphics?

The Intro are probably pre-rendered most likely. Just like any CGI animated movie would be done. I honestly don't know though. PM Doug or Chet, I'm sure they would know. Since it has nothing to do with Ep3, I'm sure they willingly talk their hearts out.

They're BINK-encoded videos.

They use a program called Source Filmmaker, its a video editor inside the engine itself, but it is unreleased at this stage and is only used internally by Valve.
